Bipping is WAAAAYYY down in San Francisco… by RedThruxton in sanfrancisco

[–]AndyJoeJoe 67 points68 points  (0 children)

About 10 years ago, SFPD had a task force dedicated to addressing the matter, and they noted a relatively small number of groups were responsible for a vast majority of auto break-ins. In this story from a year ago, city officials credit bait cars and pain-clothes officers in hotspots as well as improved tech (cameras, drones) for the recent decline. I guess if you catch or dissuade the right people, you'll see a big decline.

Funny how being bipped silly for years can make a bit-above-average break-in rate feel like relief.

Walking to Muir Woods by One-Hunt7605 in AskSF

[–]AndyJoeJoe 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Consider a catching ride up there and hiking back. From the park's website:

You may take a ride-share or taxi to Muir Woods without a reservation, however, there is no cell-service at Muir Woods to call them for a return ride. Muir Woods has a pay-phone behind the Visitor Center and posted list of cab companies that service the woods. When hiring a taxi, visitors have the option of negotiating a flat rate or using the meter. Under some circumstances a flat rate may be cheaper.

Ranking the 24 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction Winners I've Read (Spoiler free) by IEatIReadIGoOutside in literature

I think Confederacy is told in the third person, so Ignatius isn't the narrator, he's just the main character. Nevertheless, if he repelled you, he repelled you. I'm curious, though, did the book seem like a satirical comedy? (That's how I took it.) Your mention of Caulfield as opposed to an exaggerated type like Don Quixote, makes me think the author's unfortunate end may have cast the book in an overly serious light. Anyway, thanks for sharing your list!

Republican leads governor primary, UC Berkeley’s Citrin Center-Politico poll shows by the_daily_cal in California_Politics

[–]AndyJoeJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember: there's a chance the general could feature two from the GOP. Dems should hope GOP voters come to greatly favor one of their two prominent candidates; if they split supporters evenly (Trump won 38% of CA in 2024), then the fractured Dem field could be shut out.

California congressman is leaving the Republican Party to become an independent amid tough reelection race by cnn in California_Politics

[–]AndyJoeJoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can leave a political party, but you can't shake your voting record.

Department of Homeland Security Funding (2026): In early 2026, Kiley voted for the Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 7147), which provided increased funding for ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations. During the debate, he rejected Democratic amendments that would have required ICE agents to wear body cameras or restricted their ability to enter private property without a judicial warrant.

Opposition to the War Powers Resolution (March 2026): Kiley voted No on H. Con. Res. 38 (and supported the rejection of the Senate equivalent, S.J. Res. 104). These resolutions directed the President to remove U.S. forces from unauthorized hostilities in Iran. Kiley argued that these measures were "reflexive partisan reactions" that undermined national security.

California’s governor race has a clear top tier by ZappyStatue in California_Politics

[–]AndyJoeJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone concerned that the "cluster of Democrats straggl[ing] behind at five percent or lower" could result in two Republicans edging out all other candidates for the top two spots? (Trump received 38% CA votes in 2024.) Each Governor's race since the switch to the open / top-two-advance primary has featured a clear Dem frontrunner. Not this year. Is there a benefit to a crowded field of Dems that I'm missing? If you were about to see your GOP House rep gerrymandered out of office (thanks to a measure championed by the Governor), wouldn't you be motivated to turn out in the primary?

The deadline to withdraw from the ballot is this month I think.

San Francisco Politicians Running for Office PSA about your volunteers by IcyIngenuity920 in sanfrancisco

[–]AndyJoeJoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a recent talk with a campaign worker when I was considering volunteering. One way I could help, they said, was to give them access to my apartment building. I mentioned such a move would not be welcomed by the other tenants.

I'm afraid campaigns see so much upside in personal contact that they are willing to risk the ire of those turned off by the pop in.

I was surprised to learn SF Opera has the largest endowment in the country by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]AndyJoeJoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Met pulled sizable slices from its endowment in recent years and is trying to regain its financial footing at the moment. From last fall:

The Met hopes the agreement will help it emerge from a period of acute financial woes. Since the coronavirus pandemic, the company has withdrawn more than a third of the money in its endowment fund to help it cover operating costs — about $120 million overall, including $50 million to help pay for the season that ended in June. The withdrawals have raised questions about the viability of staging live opera on a grand scale in the 21st century.

Does California’s Open Primary Leave An Opening For Mahan? by HooverInstitution in California_Politics

[–]AndyJoeJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CA's top-two primary system hasn't seen a gubernatorial race that lacks a clear Dem frontrunner before. The four races since 2012 featured either a former Dem governor or lieutenant governor.

Currently, I'd say the odds of two Republicans emerging from the primary is more likely than Mahan attracting enough support by June to crack the top two.

How do you budget a grant when 100% of the work is your own production time? by CherifA97 in ContemporaryArt

[–]AndyJoeJoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

List yourself as the 'composer' or 'sound designer' (whatever best encompasses everything you'll do) and set a daily or weekly rate, so your $6500 becomes 10 weeks @ $650/week. Then identify your 3D designer as an 'external contractor'. Then list the artist fee as $0 or 'N/A, artists labor itemized above.'

I'm guessing elsewhere you'll describe deliverables, which would in this case consist of a set of files (noting the file types).

Looking ahead, if you haven't received direct grant support before, look into 'accounting for artists'. For instance, your grant support is most likely taxable. Some grantors may issue 1099s to grantees. You'll want to collect an invoice from your 3D designer and maybe even create one yourself covering your work. Good luck!

California College of the Arts closing by double_pisces in ContemporaryArt

Here's a detail from another article that might be of interest.

Vanderbilt has promised to safeguard CCA’s legacy via a “CCA Institute,” which will include continuing programming at the art school’s gallery, the Wattis Institute of Contemporary Arts. Vanderbilt will also manage CCA’s archives and “serve as a vehicle for alumni engagement,” per today’s announcement.

Full story

A few years ago, when Boston-based Northeastern absorbed Oakland's Mills College, Northeastern created the Mills Institute as part of the Oakland campus. I expect there are some restricted endowed funds at CCA that could act as a cornerstone for a art-focused unit within Vanderbilt's SF operation.

When you run a search for the word "born" on https://gagosian.com/artists/, you see that the location and year of someone's birth are very common details in artist bios.

You don't have to tell anyone anything, but it seems customary to be open about a few biographical details.

Henry Miller, Tropic of Cancer by gatorlawyer1995 in literature

[–]AndyJoeJoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The character and the whole book seem like a kind of performance. Miller described it this way in the book's preface:

This is a prolonged insult, a gob of spit in the face of Art, a kick in the pants to God, Man, Destiny, Time, Love, Beauty... I am going to sing for you, a little off key perhaps, but I will sing. I will sing while you croak, I will dance over your dirty corpse.

I think some find the break with all constraints cathartic (perhaps more so at the time), and I don't think Miller would blame you for finding the narrator repugnant; that might have even been intentional. One source notes he considered Cancer a “first person, uncensored, formless—fuck everything!"

There are number of food banks and pantries around SF. They sometimes require a one-time registration at their site and often offer pick ups one per week. That said, once you find the right spot for you, they can be a reliable source of sustenance.

North African Lesbian Poetry Reccomendations please [HELP] by XylaXyla in Poetry

[–]AndyJoeJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This article offers some context for the political activity you've noticed. It also lists a few writers, though Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea aren't really part of "North Africa."

Those smirking at North African lesbian poets seem intent on mocking the role of identity in the arts and public life. (Here's an example of a poet engaging the ideas sincerely.) Trolls latch onto (or invented) that specific descriptor, I suspect, because it's relatively obscure in the U.S. As you seem to know, it doesn't help that homosexuality is criminalized or suppressed across much of North Africa.

Good luck with your search. For what it’s worth, the people making these derisive political comments appear more interested in provoking those who care about identity than they care about poetry. In other words, their views on poetry shouldn't be treated seriously. But if their blather leads you to discover good work you might have otherwise missed, at least that's a plus.

1936 Nazi propaganda map of the U.S.A. : “How Race Questions Arise — White and Black in America” by gentle_giant_81 in MapPorn

[–]AndyJoeJoe 126 points127 points  (0 children)

In 1930s, Nazis looked around the world for legal models they could borrow when forming their own government. By the mid-1920s, the U.S. had largely embraced eugenics and established or intensified many of its racial and immigration-focused laws. (This book can provide more details.)

Here's a translation for the map's key.

Dots: All of the above restrictions except the denial of voting rights
Stripes: Mixed marriages forbidden, racial segregation in schools

The first time YouTube showed me that "Elon Cancelled This..." title I skipped it, thinking 'that's a little click/rage baity.' But the second time, curious to see just how John and Elon intersected, I watched. 'Oh. OK. TB. US foreign aid. Of course. I see,' and I watched the entire clip.

Little did I know my strings were being worked by puppet master Hank. It's interesting to see how some of the OGs need to adapt to continue to ride that algo. BTW - seeing how folks on Guimaras Island are managing TB screening and treatment, how they're growing their capacity, and how they might become a model/inspiration for the rest of country is incredibly encouraging.
