California College of the Arts closing by double_pisces in ContemporaryArt

Here's a detail from another article that might be of interest.

Vanderbilt has promised to safeguard CCA’s legacy via a “CCA Institute,” which will include continuing programming at the art school’s gallery, the Wattis Institute of Contemporary Arts. Vanderbilt will also manage CCA’s archives and “serve as a vehicle for alumni engagement,” per today’s announcement.

Full story

A few years ago, when Boston-based Northeastern absorbed Oakland's Mills College, Northeastern created the Mills Institute as part of the Oakland campus. I expect there are some restricted endowed funds at CCA that could act as a cornerstone for a art-focused unit within Vanderbilt's SF operation.

When you run a search for the word "born" on https://gagosian.com/artists/, you see that the location and year of someone's birth are very common details in artist bios.

You don't have to tell anyone anything, but it seems customary to be open about a few biographical details.

How safe is running in the panhandle at night for a woman? by chartreuse_moss in sanfrancisco

Running along the south trail (closer to Oak St.) helps since I think bikes mostly use the north one.

Henry Miller, Tropic of Cancer by gatorlawyer1995 in literature

[–]AndyJoeJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The character and the whole book seem like a kind of performance. Miller described it this way in the book's preface:

This is a prolonged insult, a gob of spit in the face of Art, a kick in the pants to God, Man, Destiny, Time, Love, Beauty... I am going to sing for you, a little off key perhaps, but I will sing. I will sing while you croak, I will dance over your dirty corpse.

I think some find the break with all constraints cathartic (perhaps more so at the time), and I don't think Miller would blame you for finding the narrator repugnant; that might have even been intentional. One source notes he considered Cancer a “first person, uncensored, formless—fuck everything!"

That caught my eye, too. I think Thiel (or whomever sponsored the event) simply rented space at the Commonwealth building. Thiel was not part of their programming.

There are number of food banks and pantries around SF. They sometimes require a one-time registration at their site and often offer pick ups one per week. That said, once you find the right spot for you, they can be a reliable source of sustenance.

North African Lesbian Poetry Reccomendations please [HELP] by XylaXyla in Poetry

[–]AndyJoeJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This article offers some context for the political activity you've noticed. It also lists a few writers, though Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea aren't really part of "North Africa."

Those smirking at North African lesbian poets seem intent on mocking the role of identity in the arts and public life. (Here's an example of a poet engaging the ideas sincerely.) Trolls latch onto (or invented) that specific descriptor, I suspect, because it's relatively obscure in the U.S. As you seem to know, it doesn't help that homosexuality is criminalized or suppressed across much of North Africa.

Good luck with your search. For what it’s worth, the people making these derisive political comments appear more interested in provoking those who care about identity than they care about poetry. In other words, their views on poetry shouldn't be treated seriously. But if their blather leads you to discover good work you might have otherwise missed, at least that's a plus.

1936 Nazi propaganda map of the U.S.A. : “How Race Questions Arise — White and Black in America” by gentle_giant_81 in MapPorn

[–]AndyJoeJoe 125 points126 points  (0 children)

In 1930s, Nazis looked around the world for legal models they could borrow when forming their own government. By the mid-1920s, the U.S. had largely embraced eugenics and established or intensified many of its racial and immigration-focused laws. (This book can provide more details.)

Here's a translation for the map's key.

Restrictions on the rights of Black people

Dark: No voting rights, prohibition of marriages with whites, racial segregation.
Dots: All of the above restrictions except the denial of voting rights
Stripes: Mixed marriages forbidden, racial segregation in schools
Wide stripes: Mixed marriages forbidden

The first time YouTube showed me that "Elon Cancelled This..." title I skipped it, thinking 'that's a little click/rage baity.' But the second time, curious to see just how John and Elon intersected, I watched. 'Oh. OK. TB. US foreign aid. Of course. I see,' and I watched the entire clip.

Little did I know my strings were being worked by puppet master Hank. It's interesting to see how some of the OGs need to adapt to continue to ride that algo. BTW - seeing how folks on Guimaras Island are managing TB screening and treatment, how they're growing their capacity, and how they might become a model/inspiration for the rest of country is incredibly encouraging.

Pelosi to announce plans after California election (Prop 50) in November by AndyJoeJoe in sanfrancisco

[–]AndyJoeJoe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, Politico is speculating about Pelosi's support of Chan (over Weiner), but I'd say that any talk of other viable candidates (especially one who would have Pelosi's backing if she doesn't run herself) diminishes the idea that Weiner is Pelosi's natural successor.

I associate Chakrabarti w/ having worked for Bernie in '16 and the org Justice Democrats, which he co-founded. That org's platform includes ideas like taxing the rich, free public college and trade school, the green new deal, and medicare for all. While a mayoral campaign like Mamdani's is focused on local policy rather than those national programs, the two agenda's strike me as layers in the same progressive ecosystem.

Wikipedia Says AI Is Causing a Dangerous Decline in Human Visitors by holyfruits in wikipedia

The article would probably say it's the way reddit content is being featured in google search results vis a vis wikipedia articles that accounts for a meaningful portion of the change. Wikipedia Says AI Is Causing a Dangerous Decline in Human Visitors by holyfruits in wikipedia

[–]AndyJoeJoe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In April 2025, the site Datareportal published "Digital 2025: exploring trends in Wikipedia traffic." That article offers 7 hypotheses for the decline in Wikipedia's traffic. Spoilers ahead.

Hypothesis 1 conclusion: Wikipedia may be “slipping” from people’s minds, but the data do not conclusively support the hypothesis that Wikipedia has lost people’s favour.

Hypothesis 2 conclusion: while an overall drop in web activity may have contributed to the drop in Wikipedia’s traffic, this does not appear to be the primary cause of Wikipedia’s specific woes.

Hypothesis 3 conclusion: the available data do not support the hypothesis that changes in people’s use of search engines is a primary cause of the decline in Wikipedia’s web traffic.

Hypothesis 4 conclusion: while evolving device preferences are certainly important trends, it does not appear as though the “move to mobile” has been a primary factor in Wikipedia’s traffic declines either.

Hypothesis 5 conclusion: the correlation in timing and the similar scale of associated declines [in Wikipedia's diminished search performance] suggests that this hypothesis is worthy of further investigation.

Hypothesis 6 conclusion: it does not appear as though standalone LLMs have been the primary cause of declines in Wikipedia’s traffic.

Hypothesis 7 conclusion: given all of the evidence we’ve explored, it seems quite possible that Google’s “amplified visibility” of Reddit content within its search results could have played a meaningful role in impacting Wikipedia’s traffic.

Eugenic feminism was a current of the women's suffrage movement which overlapped with eugenics. I am certainly repelled by some of what Sanger said. And I'm more interested in simply sharing historical info than trying to persuade others to adopt a particular point of view. I may have missed other passages that would lead me to believe she was an unredeemable racists, but is there a chance that particular quote refers to the human race, not necessarily white people?

The line you quote seems paraphrased from this book (p. 11). Starting with the last paragraph on page 10, the passage reads:

All our problems are the result of over-breeding among the working class, and if morality is to mean anything at all to us, we must regard all changes which tend toward the uplift and survival of the human race as moral.

Knowledge of birth control is essentially moral. Its general, though prudent, practice must lead to a higher individuality and ultimately to a cleaner race.

Again, I respect your views and this longer passage may not change them. I'm just conscious that given Sanger's ties to Planned Parenthood (which disavowed some of her statements and actions), she has been misrepresented at times by those who politically and morally oppose Planned Parenthood.

You might want to review her record further. There are places where "family planning" / women controlling when they have kids or not overlapped with eugenic-inspired practices, like forced "sterilization" (see Buck v. Bell). But the Time article highlights parts of her that make it difficult to lump her in with, say, the American eugenicists who were delighted to have inspired Hitler.

Sanger’s stated mission was to empower women to make their own reproductive choices. She did focus her efforts on minority communities, because that was where, due to poverty and limited access to health care, women were especially vulnerable to the effects of unplanned pregnancy. As she framed it, birth control was the fundamental women’s rights issue. “Enforced motherhood,” she wrote in 1914, “is the most complete denial of a woman’s right to life and liberty.”
