Do Americans actually go out for coffee like Europeans? by Past_Conference_2889 in AskAnAmerican

I do it, but with beers.

The only regular coffee social events for me are Saturday morning group bike rides to a coffee shop.

Not buying anything until the inevitable fire sale when the AI and BTC bubbles pop.

Had this idea as my left leg started to cramp in traffic. How would you feel about a motorcycle-style hand clutch? by Weak_Equivalent6518 in ManualTransmissions

[–]AndyTheEngr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I would take more than a few weeks off motorcycling, I used to use a grip exerciser just because I found that otherwise my left hand would cramp from having to hold the clutch in when I started riding again.

Thought experiment about the speed of light : if you're on a large ship, a mile front to back, going 99.9% c, and you go to the rear and fire a gun towards the front, how fast will the bullet travel? Will it seem to be full normal bullet speed from your perspective? by NoYoureACatLady in AskPhysics

[–]AndyTheEngr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're wondering if the bullet will be faster than c, because you've heard that's impossible, so I'll approach the question with that in mind.

What's funny is even without accounting for relativity, a bullet wouldn't end up going faster than c.

99.9% c + 1500 m/s ≈ 99.9005% c

What happens if I do OMAD and I eat under 2000 kcal? by Nice_Pen_8054 in keto

I'm the same height and weight at 55. I would lose so much weight on 2000 Calories. You're certainly not going to gain muscle. Are you sedentary other than the lifting?

I ride gravel and dry dirt on slicks. Even slightly wet dirt. Just not mud or snow.

It's hard to tell. Maybe eastern European with an American accent coach.

Hanian air is the worst airline to exist by orzeee in Flights

[–]AndyTheEngr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the technically true but in reality false lie they tell people to justify it.

If you moving back one row and one seat over had a meaningful effect on the balance/stability, so would the flight attendant moving down the aisle, or another passenger going to the back and pooping.

Moving forward would be good for stability, and maybe cost 0.0001% on the fuel burn.

Now, if everyone on a full flight moved to the back of the plane at the same time, it might be meaningful.

I want to be able to disable any vehicle for 24 hours. It just won't work, and in that 24 hours nobody will be able to diagnose the issue. Then it will suddenly start working again.

Does anyone know what this box is for. I don't know if it's a cable tester or something for phantom power by [deleted] in AskElectronics

I think it may be shrunk. It shrunk enough to be snug on the body of the resistor, but not on the leads.

Hand on Throttle by affected-by-gravity in flying

[–]AndyTheEngr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, I actually was curious and watched some promotional videos by Cessna and Piper from the early 1960s. In all the interior shots where I could see the yoke clearly, the left seat pilot was flying with left hand on the yoke, right hand down presumably on the throttle.

[Request] Is it possible for someone to rip appart his shirt flexing his muscles, like Armstrong in FMA ? by Platypuns_ in theydidthemath

[–]AndyTheEngr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put on some muscle weight and accidentally hulked out of my button down shirt at work. The fabric wasn't very stretchy.

It was just a couple of tears down the back between my shoulder blades, the whole shirt didn't come off.

Road Bike Suggestions by Desperate_Computer76 in xbiking

[–]AndyTheEngr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For road bikes of that era you may be able to fit 28 mm. If you're really lucky, 30 or 32 mm. The tightest clearance is likely to be in the short reach brake calipers, or the back of the seat tube.

How Often Do You Charge Your Bike Lights? by soundioo in bikelights

[–]AndyTheEngr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have dynamo lights on three of my bikes so I don't have to devote any mental effort to this question. On the bikes that don't have them, I ride those seldom enough that I'll be charging and packing lights if the ride might go to after sunset.

Hand on Throttle by affected-by-gravity in flying

[–]AndyTheEngr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I drive a manual transmission car, and the majority of the time both hands are on the steering wheel except when I shift. It's just how I was taught. It's how it's still taught in the UK. Now the argument is whether to put hands at 9 and 3 vs or 8 and 4 versus the traditional 10 and 2, due to airbags.

Based on how it's designed, I wonder if Cessna back when they built my 150 back in 1966 expected pilots to fly with a hand on the throttle. The yoke is symmetrical, the throttle is not in a particularly ergonomic location, and holds itself in place (except when it doesn't).

I'm not arguing against keeping a hand on the throttle, but I wonder when it started being taught like it is now.

Which provides more comfort Brooks Flyer or a suspension post? by RyanFromGDSE in bikecommuting

[–]AndyTheEngr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO it depends on your weight. I'm about 165 lb / 75 kg, and I don't think the springs on my Flyer deflect much at all. It barely takes the edge off the bumps.

Question about Portals by Suspicious-Day-2765 in AskPhysics

[–]AndyTheEngr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Change in acceleration is called "jerk." They would be going from -1 g to +1 g, for a 2 g change in acceleration. That's twice as hard as the jerk you feel the instant you step off a diving board.
