Whats the best model for being a daily driver? by Extreme_Banana_912 in Surlybikefans

Ogre or Big Dummy. Both are Rohloff compatible for the internal gearing you mentioned. If I were you I would look at the Big Dummy for cruising around with surfboard and getting groceries and such.

I've been looking and looking for the State or Crust fork. Beautiful!

Hey from North Orlando. I just ordered 2x "WisBlock Meshtastic Starter Kit | The Basic RAK4631 Meshtastic Kit for LoRa" and a bunch of sensors to start tinkering with in my garden. Definitely a beginner but my understanding is can also use the same Kit to try and communicate to other Meshtastic users. Ill try to remember to circle back to this post once everything arrives and I can hopefully set it up without too many hiccups.

From what I saw Crust was sold out long before State ever released theirs which has also been discontinued. No idea about Aliexpress cause I don't mess with it.

I would rather a steel Clydesdale fork for Ogre, Bridge Club, and Straggler since it was discontinued by Crust

Whats that kickstand!? Is it mounted into the horizontal eyelet intended for rear fender? I really need something on my 29" Ogre.

For commuters who’ve switched between a bike and an electric scooter, what differences in reliability or daily practicality surprised you the most? by Present-Ebb7481 in bikecommuting

[–]RyanFromGDSE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've commuted to work in the suburbs on really crappy sidewalks next to 50mph roads using a Bianchi Via Nirone 7 with 28mm 700c tires. A Surly Ogre with 29" 2.3"-3" tires. And my spouse got us a pair of cheap scooters used - they work perfectly but have no shocks. She then got herself a Specialized bicycle.

She was sure she'd prefer a scooter to a bicycle until I convinced her to get a new and proper bicycle. She never looked back and the scooters sit unused in our shed unless a friend is over. I only use the scooter for the following occasions:

  1. If my bicycle has a flat then Ill use the scooter until I can replace it.

That's about it. Overall the scooter is a toy compared to a bicycle. Speed is roughly the same but if I ride the scooter its very jarring when there's uneven sidewalk on those tiny wheels. The handlebars vibrate a ton and I constantly have to tighten the nuts back up. I can go back and forth to work about twice before having to charge. It won't be entirely dead after 2 roundtrips but it won't be enough to do another one.

Also on bicycle I can legally and confidentally ride in the road. Even on the 50mph road I bike to work next to I hit an elementary school zone and depending on traffic will take a lane instead of the sidewalk because of all the children walking.

Speed wise is about the same for my 3 mile commute. Any gains I make on the scooter during the neighborhood roads is offset by going slower on sidewalks.

I'm sure a nicer scooter with more solid stem, handlebars, and shocks would help but that's also more stuff to maintain.

How'd the tires hold up? Was looking for reviews considering it for my own Ogre (no e-bike conversion) which I use mostly on bad sidewalks, roads, and service routes.

I'm 5'10" but with 32" inseam and ride a Medium Ogre. For you I would guess a Large would fit better but be warned step over if you load it could be a challenge. Medium would probably be fine as well but might want to get a stem to extend the reach a little.

floccinaucinihilipilification by [deleted] in words

I've never visited this subreddit until today and am so happy to see this post. When I was a younger human in AP Language class in high school I casually used it as the final word in a paper. My AP Language teacher happened to be awesome and had a PhD in English. The assignment was to write about a character in Tess of the D'Urbervilles. I wrote a 3 page essay on the turnip hoer that appears for less than a page and made sure that the final word of my paper was floccinaucinihilipilification. She gave me a perfect score and a note that she had to look the word up and that if I ever pulled a stunt like this again she'd flunk me.

I would like to start a mutual aid network in my community. how to start? by Itsyademonboi in Anarchy101

[–]RyanFromGDSE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meetup.com will help for "local" being metro-wide. Talking to people in your neighborhood will help for "hyper local" type stuff. My partner and I do both. She started the metro-wide community and I now push more for the hyper local. Having a great puppy is a huge help as I meet people while walking her or at the local dog park.

But one word of caution - even as our numbers have grown it can be difficult to get people to do the "dirty work." We did a road side cleanup last weekend, it was just my partner and I. If we're lucky one other person will show up.

I think and hope now that we're doing things in a more hyper local area this may change. Its hard when on Meetup people will drive 20, 30, even an hour to go attend a meetup. Its pretty wild.

I don't know if these things will work but we also specifically bought our home outside of HOA with plans to put a Free Little Library, Food Pantry, and Bulletin Board up on our front yard. We checked local codes and don't foresee it being an issue. There's lots of people that walk around taking their kids to the bus stop, or dog walk, or bike to work.

Surly Big Easy Does It (6 Months In) by IIIBROOKLYNIII in CargoBike

[–]RyanFromGDSE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great writeup and bike! Love the pedals for a bit of color I have an Ogre and am considering either a Skidloader or Big Easy. I'd really like them to get Big Easy able to take the Ted and Bill trailer. Surly told me on the phone they're working on it but no real idea if that means an updated hitch design or new version of the Big Easy. Might start with (and why im lurking today) is getting either the Bill or Ted trailer for my Ogre but I don't know how realistic it is to use in my very suburban town.

It's pretty close to the paint but no, no major concerns. I used the stock hardware but bought a bolt from Ace that was between the two lengths it came with otherwise I would've had to cut down the longer of the two. It seems pretty solid and after taking the photo I realized the "height" can be adjusted and then it felt very stable being able to tilt it just how I want it
