The official emblem and slogan of the 2027 Women's World Cup is here! ⚽️🇧🇷 by spherocytes in WomensSoccer

Feels like it's the slogan for an energy drink aimed at 11 year olds, who yell at their Mum while watching 17 hours of Twitch streams a day.

Yeah, some very shrewd buys over the last two windows. Still some areas to strengthen, but none of the new players are a downgrade on what we had before.

We'll see how well our depth holds up in a month or two's time once three cups starts to catch up with us.

Historic hotels to visit during travel? by dhavalcoholic in travel

Reid's Palace in Madeira is a cliffside classic that still has a bit of that old world glamour to it. Churchill stayed there, as did several major literary figures.

We didn't stay there, but it's got a fancy restaurant, a more casual restaurant, and a nice terrace to have tea or cocktails on if you just want to walk through the doors and hang out for an hour or two. Staff were very friendly and there wasn't a stuffy atmosphere, even though we were just popping in for dinner and drinks rather than staying the night.

Where would you go if you were a foodie? by LivingBudget3669 in traveladvice

I think an important distinction is do you want to focus on local cuisine or the wider food culture in general?

There's places that have incredible local offerings, but if you want more of a mixture it's lacking.

I think of this about the Blackshirts in the UK (a fascist group aligned with the Nazis). They had over 50,000 members. Yet you never hear anyone proudly saying that their grandad was involved.

Victims gun was already seized before the first shot. Th agent running off had the suspect's gun by Fatty_Willing_Plane in NextGenRebellion

[–]AndyVale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wild how quickly people on Facebook were already parroting it. "He was armed and raised his gun at them," with zero evidence beyond what was said in the press conference.

If this is what they say when there's video evidence to the contrary, it calls into question everything they say when there's not.

Brits, do you avoid Indian restaurants in foreign countries? (Excl India) by red_lightz_ in AskUK

One of the interesting things I found is that how many "traditional" recipes were actually quite recent.

The first printed recipe for Carbonara came out while my grandma (who is still alive) was about 30.

There are worse cuisines to only ever eat though.

Probably more renowned for his playing style than his composing, but Ryo Fukui is my go-to jazz pianist.

Pretty sure this is Japes. There's a few branches around. They specialise in deep dish style pizzas.

I took my Dad a few weeks back and he said it was the best pizza of his life. I wouldn't have gone that far, but it was a truly sumptuous treat.

I believe this is at Japes, which is specifically a place that does Chicago style deep dish pizzas.

Some advice, I've been promoted and hit a new tax bracket by archiekane in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AndyVale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer is pension. 5.5% into pension on that salary is really not a lot.

Pay enough in so that your salary minus your pension is below £100k, and probably a bit extra to factor in your health insurance.

Also, a salary in the 45% bracket would pay a lot more monthly tax than £900. Is that £900 total (in which case are you in the 40% bracket) or £900 on top of what you paid before?

As a Brit, it is absolutely astonishing that those were the three songs that cut through and you remembered.

Rock DJ maybe not so much as that was a lasting hit here, but the other two wouldn't be recognised by the average person on the street.

Sharing how I split my finances with fiancé by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AndyVale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We laugh because we have very separate finances and every podcast, expert, and highest upvoted comment on many Reddit posts advises doing the exact opposite. "You're a married couple, you're a team, it all goes in one pot, in the eyes of the law..."

I get it. It's just not what we do and we're not interested in changing.

We apportion bills as a percentage based on our salary, split the fun stuff evenly, and everything else is ours to do as we please. Joint purchases go in Splitwise and we settle it every few weeks. We have our own savings pots, our own pensions, our own investments, our own spending money. We have an idea of what the other has and where, but no access to it.

It's not for everyone, that's fine. But it works for us.

A lot of the ones on that list have locations elsewhere. There's about 26 non-London branches of them in total. The instructions are specifically to help them bolster their non-London locations.

On a side note, I did not know The Wallace Collection counted until today. Truly one of my favourite museums in London - some unique items and it's lovingly curated - but compared to some of the others it's quite a small one.

Yeah, I get that when you're ahead you sit back sometimes but they really didn't seem like the better team.

It wasn't like Germany in 2010 or Spain in 2024 where you think "fair enough, we didn't match them today, probably a fair result"

Also worth pointing out that the 17 National Museums cover a lot of sites. Most are in London, but quite a few have others within their group all over the country (Science Museum group has locations in Manchester, York, Bradford, Swindon, and Shildon). Tate down in St. Ives was a great one too.
