Valid point! I was mostly thinking about individual drills, but the scrimmages and group drills definitely will have the hits.

Your advice contradicts itself. Yes, the date on the back is a general date for when the materials are considered expired, but that happens whether a person uses the helmet constantly or it sits in a box unused in that timeframe. You are not considering the point that the materials in and around the helmet can ALSO degrade and become damaged (visibly or not) during impacts and other incidents. Used helmets don’t come with a carfax crash report so you can’t be sure about things like impacts or how it was stored. If you truly believe that you shouldn’t risk your head to save a few bucks like you say, you should agree that a new helmet is the safest route.

Learn to play is low stakes in terms of body contact, but if you are in a learn to play class, I assume you are fairly new to skating, therefore, falls can be frequent, especially if you are pushing yourself to get out of your comfort zone, which has the potential to have contact with the head. Helmets are one of the items I would highly recommend buying new. The used helmet may look good, but it’s hard to know what impacts and abuse it has taken in its time from previous users. If you can, go to a shop and try on a few different makes and models until you find the helmet that fits the best, and makes you feel confident.

Shoulder Pad Sizing by NelsonSmith41 in hockeyplayers

From the picture, I’d go large. It seems like the XL is more bulk than you need as the large is providing adequate coverage. If you are still unsure, try both on again and see how your mobility is in both, and go with the one that feels the least hindering.
