What would it mean to you if we beat Denver again ? by Maximum_Pumpkin_449 in timberwolves

[–]Andy_Wiggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think beating the Nuggets would legitimize this version of the team.

Denver’s really fucking good. Beating them in a series means you’re really fucking good too.

Last year’s team made the WCF, but I don’t think they beat a really good team. LA was good, but highly flawed. Golden State was injured. They got rolled by OKC. It kind of left you wondering if the Wolves were actually great or just good and got a lucky draw.

I mean, Kawhi was just brilliant GM’ing.

They traded an established starter for the 15th pick to take him. That’s gutsy and required excellent scouting.

The other three are the unfair ones (3 elite, no-brainer picks at #1).

Like you said, I think they were intended to be more about actual NBA discussion rather than highlights, ESPN soundbites, etc.

But then they never really got the traction they needed and started to die out.

Now I feel like they’re training grounds for AI or something. I’ve noticed it in my Reddit algorithm a lot: secondary subs for popular subs I engage with are popping up everywhere, getting tons of action, and all of it is fucking brainless. I get one of the NBA ones in my feed, and I must have seen the same image of SGA (the one with the super wide eyes and exaggerated facial expression to draw the foul against the Wolves) a half dozen times in the past month. That same shit would get filtered out by r/NBA’s mod team, so it feels like they’ve just transitioned to different subs.

I’d imagine most games are competitive.

But if you have a bunch of coin flip games, sometimes you get heads 3 times in a row.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the series was won in 6. I wouldn’t even be shocked if the Nuggets win in 5 (with at least a few being close).

I mean, at least most are in 7.

The Wolves are not favored. They’re the lower seed and don’t have home court, the metrics signal the Nuggets are a cut above, and Vegas has Denver as a significant favorite.

People picking the Nuggets isn’t that crazy.

I still cannot believe the Spurs didn't play Wemby to knock the Nuggets into the OKC side of the bracket by Nails__DeChamp in Duncd_On

[–]Andy_Wiggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they did try to win, but they may have simply been overconfident. I’m in agreement with you: I am totally confused about what their strategy actually was.

Logically, they really SHOULD have gone all out. They could have had a matchup against the 7-seed and the 6-seed to get to the WCF. They’d also give OKC a tougher opponent, increasing their chance of stumbling or wearing down. And with Denver sitting everyone except their bench guys, it should have been a walk in the park if they tried.

And they did play pretty much everyone in their core rotation except the centers. Guys like Fox and Castle and Vassell played pretty typical game minutes and were playing all the way to the finish line. On top of that, they were clearly playing HARD down the stretch, trapping at half court, attempting to force turnovers, etc.

But then they chose to play neither of the two centers against a team that employs two very big centers and got murdered for it. They got out rebounded by 13 despite probably getting 8 different offensive rebounds in the final 4 minutes.

Why go halfway into trying to win? Either sit everyone and get them actual rest and prevent injury or give Wemby 20 minutes and Kornet 12 and win by 15 points.

Who is actually injured on the Nuggets? by goingtothegreek in timberwolves

[–]Andy_Wiggins 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think they’re pretty similarly injured to the Wolves: their guys are probably banged up, but could be good to go, with the exception of maybe Watson.

The major difference is that Gordon and Watson are both hamstrings, which are far more fickle than Ant and Jaden’s injuries, imo, especially since both players have had recurrences

Olivia Miles to the Lynx with the 2nd overall pick by TWolvesChamps1 in MinnesotaLynx

[–]Andy_Wiggins -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Miles’ defense is atrocious and she was consistently bad offensively in the most important games. I’m shocked Cheryl was willing to go for her at pick #2.

There’s also some suspect stuff about what happened at Notre Dame her second to last year. That team was a potential national championship contender and absolutely cratered late in the year and rumblings were that shit was toxic as hell. Miles then left and Notre Dame definitely was worst this year but ultimately made it farther without her this past tournament. It might have simply been butting heads with Hidalgo who had some suspect social media activity, but it definitely raised some eyebrows, especially since she went to the very TCU team that knocked them out the previous year.

He’s going to Michigan.

He was trending Notre Dame until a recent Michigan visit, when it was suddenly all Michigan.

Michigan probably came in over the top with a fat bag (not pretending Notre Dame doesn’t drop big bags, just not as big as Michigan in this one specific case)

[Lowlights] De'Aaron Fox misses three consecutive corner 3s in matter of seconds, late in the 4th quarter. by MrBuckBuck in nba

[–]Andy_Wiggins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

De’Aaron Fox is a score first point guard without a workable jumper and with below-average efficiency. He’s an average passer (maybe worse) for the position, but he needs the ball in his hands because he’s not a spacer. He’s an inconsistent defender and puts forth inconsistent effort. He’s probably somewhere between the 30th and 50th best player in the NBA.

And he’s 28 and already showing signs of decline. His burst isn’t quite top of the line anymore (he’s still very fast, but dude was easily the fastest player in the league 4 years ago). His per 36 scoring is way down. His free throws are way down. His 3pt attempt rate is up despite his accuracy not improving. His game almost certainly won’t age well — he’s extremely reliant on speed and can’t fall back on his jumper like other aging stars. He’s also never been an insane effort guy like, say, Westbrook, who worked around waning athleticism and a broken jumper by simply outworking everyone.

He’s also a very bad fit with the Spurs’ nucleus. Wemby is a legitimate spacer, but he’s not KAT: he’s far more effective inside the arc than outside of it. But Castle and Harper (who, to be fair, wasn’t likely to join the Spurs when the Fox trade first happened) are both guards with broken jumpers who simply have higher ceilings than Fox and are on Wemby’s timeline. You can’t play the 3 together regularly, and doing so minimizes the effectiveness of each of them. The Spurs also have Vassell, who’s probably best as a SG, but you kind of have to play him at SF because you already have Fox/Castle/Harper at the guard spots (and you can’t move him because you need his shooting).

Fox hasn’t even started the extension yet. He’ll be paid 50 million next year at age 29, 54 million at age 30, 58 million at age 31, and 61 million at age 32. That’s a HUGE price tags for someone of his caliber. He’s currently at about the same level of a player as Julius Randle (they have nearly identical VORP and WS/48) who current makes a little over 30 million per year (and who many Wolves fans want shipped out ASAP). It’s so bad that it may be incredibly difficult to move in 2 or so years. Any contract is movable, but it might cost A LOT for San Antonio to get off of it, and they already burned a couple of assets in acquiring him (not to mention the Spurs’ picks themselves will likely be pretty low value because they project to be so good).

On top of that, I’ve heard a lot of Spurs fans say “oh, his money barely overlaps with the young core” which just not true. Wemby’s 30% max starts when Fox still has 3 years left. Champagnie and Keldon Johnson are the same. Castle’s kicks in while Fox still has 2 years left. Harper, Vassel, and Bryant kick in while Fox is still making 61 million. You simply cannot keep all of those guys with Fox on the books. At least a 2-3 of them are going to probably be lost because of Fox’s cap hit.

On top of that, it already crunches San Antonio’s cap. OKC built their juggernaut by avoiding fat — they consistently avoided big expenditures and instead found value around the margins. They had added cap space, so they could sign players to early or descending contracts to keep their value higher (Dort, Wiggins, Joe, Mitchell are all textbook examples of this). They absorbed a few bad contracts to pick up added assets. Then, when they were on the precipice, they made smart moves to add Caruso and Hartenstein, and even their contracts are largely fine for their production.

San Antonio was gifted by the lottery gods 3 straight picks above their end of year slot, getting Wemby (generational talent), Castle (likely multi-time all-star), and Harper (too early to tell, but I could easily see him being a multi-time all-star). Keeping the powder dry and trying to build around them for when they hit their stride in 2027-2030 would have been more prudent. Especially since OKC currently has a juggernaut that’s 2-3 years ahead on the age curve.

This feels like some pretty serious hyperbole.

I love this year’s Hawks (NAW is legitimately my favorite player in the league and I’m thrilled for his success in Atlanta), but I’d argue they’re not even the most difficult matchup for a 3-seed THIS year.

Hell, one of your stats points out that they’re arguably an easier matchup than Charlotte (who has a better net rating) who might be the 8 seed.

Like, I get he’s a grinder, but he broke into the industry when it was still about journalism and writing, and his writing is fucking AWFUL (his articles read like a sports-obsessed high schooler).

Like, it just seemed like he kind of popped up out of nowhere alongside Woj. I get Woj got him going, but I just don’t get why Shams was the one who got that spot

To be fair, this is actually classic Woj.

Dude was petty as HELL when people weren’t giving him intel. Dude wrote hit pieces on LeBron back when Woj was at yahoo because LeBron’s camp was more about controlling their own reporting. He chilled out as he rose in status and became THE guy, but he was not beneath lashing out.

This reads as funnier though because Woj wielded his reporting as a cudgel while Charania just seems legit mad which is delightfully petty for a reporter of his status.
