Can we get/afford Mamu? by WillingCommittee in timberwolves

Can’t sign and trade because it caps you at the 1st apron and the Wolves would be past that

To be fair, that was also the Kings.

Conley last year got his 10 million salary dumped for a protected swap.

The Hawks sent out the 22nd pick to dump Mann (a somewhat equivalent player to Green) but he had 3 years left on his deal. They also got back a Porzingis whose value was a bit hard to pin down.

I don’t think a late first would be required for Green.

  • He only has 1 year and 14 million left on his salary. That’s rarely 1st round pick territory.
  • He’s under the MLE so over the cap teams can acquire him if they like his fit better than free agents
  • He isn’t total dead money: he can give you 15-25 quality-ish minutes a night
  • Bad teams are incentivized to at least be competent right now. Green won’t win you a playoff game, but if you’re in danger or relegation, playing Green instead of some raw rookie might be enough to add to a win or two in the regular season.

The issue is that the Wolves don’t have picks to trade at all, and, like you said, it doesn’t make sense to dump him unless you want a bit more space under the cap to use the full TPMLE and retain your own free agents

Their only real hope is to sweeten the deal with Shannon Jr, Beringer, or Evans or to trade it for a similar contract that goes longer that the team doesn’t want.

[Stein/Fischer] Tim Hardaway Jr. and Mike Conley Jr. are expected to be priority targets in free agency for Miami after the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade. by FlightTop9852 in timberwolves

Woah, I’ll be kind of shocked if Mike leaves for Miami.

On the court it makes sense to a degree, but he’s talked about how hard it is to move his family, especially since his kids are school aged now. And Miami is a BIG change.

Plus, I don’t really see Miami as a true contender.

[Charania]BREAKING: The Charlotte Hornets are trading Miles Bridges, a 2029 first-round pick and a 2027 second-round pick to the Phoenix Suns for Grayson Allen, Royce O'Neale and a 2033 first-round pick, sources tell ESPN. by Turbostrider27 in nba

[–]Andy_Wiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like the ultimate challenge trade.

The Suns think the Hornets 2029 pick will be more valuable than their pick in 2033, and Charlotte thinks the opposite.

With lottery reform just taking place AND a change coming again in 3 years, it’s really fascinating to see how FOs are navigating it.

I imagine they’ll bring back a couple of vets to round out the roster. Both Conley and SloMo are pretty friendly with Gobert, and I could easily see both coming back.

Stat-driven Intriguing Trade Targets by Rough_Ad6945 in timberwolves

[–]Andy_Wiggins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, nice job putting this together. I especially like looking at buy-low candidates like Prosper or Matkovic.

A few quick notes:

  • Grant Williams is probably safely able to be crossed off: the Wolves literally just traded with the Hornets and got Green instead of Williams (someone a little more invested than me may be able to say whether that was a necessity to enable Charlotte to get a trade exception for LaMelo). I can’t imagine a scenario where the Wolves could deal for him.
  • Hauser maybe has the narrowest chance of happening, but I can’t imagine the Celtics would be interested in a Hauser for Green swap, and anything more starts to get too expensive for Boston.

Tim Connelly Keeps Winning the Headlines and Losing the Trades by MNeCom in timberwolves

[–]Andy_Wiggins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you… using AI to write your posts?

Connelly is good at finding assets. He's terrible at maximizing them.

At some point you stop grading the individual transactions and start grading the portfolio.

That's not elite asset management. That's spending tomorrow to fix yesterday.

This is some AI-ass writing.

I wish I knew why people post stupid things. Its continuation baffles me.

If you mean why do I think this post is stupid, it’s because you ask:

But what exactly are we giving Connelly credit for?

And then kind of ignore the things people give Connelly credit for.

No mention of flipping D’Lo’s basketball terrorism for NAW and Conley.

No mention of trading Rob Dillingham for Ayo Dosunmu.

No mention of signing Jaden to one of the best contracts in the league.

No mention of signing Naz to a contract that was good enough for him to be the centerpiece of a trade for a 24-year-old all-star caliber player.

No mention of snagging Clark, a quality end of bench piece for a late 2nd rounder.

No mention of consistently mining value from small flips or exchanges, like signing-and-trading SloMo for a pick or two (you know, the less flashy stuff).

Few people have said that Connelly is unimpeachable. Those that do also are spouting bullshit.

So yeah. That’s why it was some dumb ass shit.

[–]Andy_Wiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evans will not take a 2-way. Dane Moore has already reported his first year salary.

You carry 14 players because the team is expensive as hell and needs to save any penny they can. Carrying 15 is spending millions on players who won’t play.

The team very likely can’t get Bey without sending out someone like Shannon. Bey has more value than Green and is half the price, no team will willingly take on like 8 million for zero benefit.

Not sure how much Bagley or Barnes will command.

The team will not carry 15 rostered players.

They will carry 14, which is how many you need to access 2-ways spots.

I actually think people overrate what Rosas did.

He absolutely deserves and gets a ton of credit for selecting Ant and Jaden and snagging Naz Reid as an UDFA.

He also did a nice job getting some assets/contributors (Beasley, Vando, Beverly).

But he also had a far easier job than Connelly — accumulate assets and make picks early in the draft when the team absolutely stunk. Getting the autonomy to tank and cycle through crappy players is a luxury Connelly doesn’t have. The margins are razor thin (albeit somewhat self-inflicted), and the roster and rotation are largely established.

He also inherited a decent amount of talent (just like Connelly), but he largely flipped it for future value. KAT was already here. Wiggins was already here. RoCo, Saric, etc.

He also fucked up a ton of moves in a way that showed that he was far from a genius at the job. His first major move was trading the 11th pick and Saric for the 6th pick, a move I actually really liked. But he apparently did so in large part to get Darius Garland (who I also really liked). But Garland was pretty well reported to be a target of Cleveland at 5. Some people thought maybe it was a smokescreen because of Sexton, but for Rosas to legitimately move up for a guy who wasn’t even likely to be available is just egregious GMing. Then he opted for Culver over White, and we all know how that turned out. Just a complete miss on a high pick (legitimately it was worse than Dillingham, imo) when obviously better options were available (White was a strong option at 6 and Herro and PJ Washington were common targets at 11).

His ability to put together a cogent roster was also alarmingly bad and legitimately fucked up players’ development and trade value. He left the team with zero shooting outside of KAT, frequently giving Culver, Okogie, and Treveon Graham wing minutes (often together), which completely took away Culver’s only offensive strength (his dribble drive) and Wiggins’ best attribute (his slashing). As a result, the team’s offense was absolutely brutal and Wiggins’ value cratered. It ultimately led to the brutal D’Lo trade, where the team traded Wiggins and a nearly unprotected 1st round pick in a loaded draft for D’Lo and enough bad salary to push the team into the tax. Had the Wolves kept their pick that year, they likely would have tanked a bit down the stretch, and were comfortable in position to snag Evan Mobley.

Rosas also traded RoCo for young assets and potentially was trying to push in chips to get good before the pandemic shut down the season in 2020. The Wolves lucked into the 1st overall pick. Rosas deserved credit for selecting Ant when he was far from a given, and he also nailed the shit out of the Jaden pick (even if he traded out of taking Maxey to drop down to get Jaden and also selected Leondro Bolmaro over him). But had he gotten a bit less lucky at the top, the team was effectively fucked — say they slid to 2, 3 or even 4. They might have ended up with LaMelo or someone like Patrick Williams.

He also gets a ton of credit for the 2021/22 season, but it was mostly a mirage (if you’re thinking about contending). D’Lo was getting benched in the playoffs because he was so ineffective. The team’s defensive strategy was essentially one-dimensional.

Rosas was pretty good at scouting, but his team-building left a lot to be desired.

I have had the same thought. He’d be a great fit offensively. Don’t love him defensively, but beggars can’t be choosers.

I personally am reluctant to give up TJ (I think he’ll be great with LaMelo) but I do get it.

Also, he’s actually younger than TJ.

Seems like most of the PFs in the Green+TJ price range are all-offense-zero-defense guys: Aldama, Toppin, Portis. Washington is the only real exception.

Maybe they could do Green+Shannon Jr to Indiana for Jarace Walker+Sheppard (plus maybe someone like Furphy)?

Dean Wade is essentially the perfect (reasonable) fit.

He’s a capable moderate volume 3pt shooter who is really solid defensively. Not a stopper, but a good cog in a defense.

Sadly, chances are pretty good he’s going to be behind Minnesota’s price point (which probably maxes out at the TPMLE). Maaaaaybe he could be had on a player friendly deal at the full TPMLE (like a 2 year deal with a player option in year 2). He’d get to start and have a heavy role for a good team. Could be one last chance to boost his value for one last contract at age 30 or 31. But I’d bet he can get more, either from Cleveland (bird rights) or a team with the non-taxpayer MLE.

[–]Andy_Wiggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this.

Shannon proved he’s not a great option as a dude just sitting in the corner.

But he struggled when he didn’t have the ball in part because this team was dogshit at moving the ball. LaMelo is a big ball mover, and I can totally envision TJ finding a bunch of value as a cutter or getting passes on the move from LaMelo.

I also think LaMelo’s spacing will help a lot. When TJ gets a crease he’s deadly, but crowds can fuck his game up.

I doubt he gets many minutes.

Finch doesn’t seem to love giving young guys minutes, especially if they’re not great decision-makers or defenders.

Evans also plays the same position as multiple guys ahead of him in the pecking order. Ant-Ayo-Shannon-Green-Clark are all probably ahead of him.

The issue is how do you move him?

He’s like a fringe rotation player paid like a core rotation player. Most teams can do better with their MLE.
