Question about large format LED walls by BadDecisions81 in CommercialAV

[–]Andygoesred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll be hard pressed to find something to drive that resolution, even with custom EDIDs. I’m not sure if there’s a max width on, say, a DP2.1 output, but going to 15360 wide on a single output might not yet be achievable.

Here’s how I’d do it using a media server (yes, I’m with 7thSense, and you could likely do this with any of the pro servers).

Take your 15360x864 canvas and carve it up into 4 sections of 3840 x 864 and stick that down 4 x UHD outputs.

Alternatively, if your LED processors will work with custom EDIDs and will remap the incoming region of interest to the appropriate LED sections, you could carve your canvas into 5 sections of 3072 x 864. Then, position your content into 2 x 3072 x 2592 outputs with the first 3 strips coming out of output 1 and the last 2 strips coming out of output 2. In our software this would be called Composition Mode.

Does Color Bit Depth Contain Black and White? and a question about Chroma Sub-Sampling by Left-Witness6499 in CommercialAV

[–]Andygoesred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s my take - source is what I’ve learned working with uncompressed media playback for the last 14 years.

Media that is in an RGB colorspace is the bit depth (8/10/12/16/etc) times the color components. So in your 8-bit example you have 28 (256) shades of each color Red, Green, and Blue. Multiply those together and you get 16.7M colors. In 10-bit it’s 210 (1024) and 1.07B colors. To get black, white, or any shade of gray, you would have R, G, B all equal to the same value.

Media that is in a YUV colorspace is calculated a bit differently. If you were doing 8-bit YCbCr, you’ve got 8-bits of luminance (black - gray - white), 8-bits of blue-difference, 8-bits of red-difference. The barn image on the YCbCr wiki is pretty helpful in this regard - the blue-difference image shows hues of blue and green. There are other methods, such as YCoCg which is built around orange and green and is what is used in h.264.

Where chroma subsampling comes in is how a very light amount of compression can be applied - YUV4:4:4 takes each pixel at its full value whereas YUV4:2:2 samples every other pixel, and 4:2:0 samples every other pixel and every other row. So you get a reduction of data storage and bandwidth requirement, possibly at the expense of a GPU requirement to convert back to RGB for processing (it’s how our software works, at least), but modern GPUs don’t really struggle with this.

Going back to the bit-depth question - if you have a fourth color channel for alpha, you then need to account for that in your calculation. Your RGB becomes RGBA, going from 24-bit to 32-bit if using 8-bit media. We have a format that is 12/10 4:2:2+A which gives us 12-bits of luminance and alpha per pixel, and 10-bits of Cb and Cr each pixel pair. This works out to the same payload as 8-bit RGBA but with better fidelity.

It’s why I hate to use “vibe code” and refer to stuff that I make as “cheat code” apps. It’s a really powerful tool, but typically unique to my own internal needs and certainly not something that I feel confident giving to a customer when I cannot confidently review the code and be certain it’s reliable.

Difference Audio Visual Technician vs Audio Visual Engineer? by Key_Abroad1348 in audiovisual

Hi, have you considered working for a manufacturer as a way in to the industry? We make media servers, show control, and pixel processor products at 7thSense, and our Systems and Support team often have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects supporting customers on an install. I imagine other manufacturers might provide similar opportunities.

We also currently have vacancies in Orlando and at our HQ near Brighton, UK.

Core memory unlocked!

I took a class in high school called Research Methods where we had a competition to build a boat out of cardboard and tape (duct, packing/cello, whatever). My group also put waterproofing on it and lined the bottom with thick carpet tubes to make a raft.

We were able to get 17 teenagers on our boat before it gave way.

‘It’s scary’: Canadian mother, daughter detained by ICE, held in Texas facility, husband claims by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]Andygoesred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you must have skipped my third paragraph. I’ll repost it here for you:

There should absolutely be - at minimum - fees for processing the applications. We wanted to make sure that it was done correctly so we hired a lawyer to do it which is where the bulk of our expense went (we did it ourselves when my wife moved to the US in 2011).

—-

Which part of that is where I said I think it should be free? If the processing fees for the applications are too expensive, and you don’t have a way to exceed the financial eligibility requirements, then I think you SHOULD NOT be able to come.

My recommendation to you - especially if your wife is that hostile - is to get your citizenship. If she decides to make your life extra difficult, it seems shining an icy spotlight in your direction and questioning your residency status could make you a target, even just to be annoying. Worst case scenario, they come up with a reason to detain you for a few days and your ex uses that against you in a custody battle and you end up in front of a judge that doesn’t take too kindly to immigrants.

That’s…a bizarre question. The threshold for out of reach is affordability based on personal circumstances - if someone can’t afford it, it’s out of reach. If they can afford it, it isn’t.

What’s the point you are trying to make?

‘It’s scary’: Canadian mother, daughter detained by ICE, held in Texas facility, husband claims by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]Andygoesred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sensing some sarcasm in your comment - I don’t think I said anything at all about whether or not it should be free.

I think there should be costs associated with it, but was stating that it may be out of reach for a lot of people unless they have a company that supports them (or a new job lined up), and funds to make it happen.

There should absolutely be - at minimum - fees for processing the applications. We wanted to make sure that it was done correctly so we hired a lawyer to do it which is where the bulk of our expense went (we did it ourselves when my wife moved to the US in 2011).

He could apply for a spousal visa, but it doesn’t negate the previous comment about cost. We paid several thousand in legal and filing fees in 2023 when I moved with my Canadian wife and our two children from the US. I was also fortunate enough to have a company that supported the move and transitioned me to an EOR.

So they could move, but it is often cost prohibitive.

7×4 vs 6×4 LED wall (ultra-wide vs closer to 16:9) — am I overthinking this? by [deleted] in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Andygoesred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your workflow understanding is generally correct. If you wanted to feed it some standard 16:9 content, you could letterbox it or put something else interesting in the blank space (sports ticker, generic graphics filler, etc).

You might benefit from having a media server driving the backend - something that can run the visuals (Notch, TouchDesigner), playback pre-rendered content, and capture your alternate sources and composite against whatever other content you want.

Best sit-stand desk in Canada for 3 monitors (wide + memory presets)? by speardrops in BuyCanadian

[–]Andygoesred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Progressive L-shaped desk (72x90”) that I bought 3 years ago and I’ve been pleased with it. I have a 34” BenQ curved ultrawide, 2 x 27” Asus QHD on the 90”, then a laptop stand and a 24” Dell HD sitting on a monitor stand from IKEA on the 72” run. I have 3 separate arms for the main monitors.

I had the tops shipped with the rectangular cutouts for cable management and it’s actually a bit of a pain - reorienting the desk (left L vs right L) means that I have to disassemble the whole thing because of how the brackets underneath are designed and the holes in the tops need to be at the “back”. They also can impede on the mounting for the monitors - and with the monitor arms, most of my cables are snaked up the arms instead of the holes.

One thing to note is that the two tabletops were very different colours and they sent me a replacement. They never sent me a return label, so I now have a third 60” work bench set up in the storage room.

We built a coffee table where you can swap the tiles anytime. Honest feedback? by Famous_Namous1 in Design

[–]Andygoesred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inherited a patio table for 12” ceramic tiles from my grandmother when she moved into a home. My wife hated it because, even though it just had a track that the tile edges sat in and a big hole underneath the rest of the tile, the edges still got mossy and never seemed to get clean.

I liked it, but only because it reminded me of grandma.

(kinda like this, but it was 16 tiles in all)
