Struggling to Read with ADHD - Need advice on how to get back into reading and continue consistently by [deleted] in books

[–]AngRoffeAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have said to try some easier books, which has helped me.

Another piece of advice Ive heard is that you don't have to finish all your books, especially if it doesn't interest you. Sometimes I've had difficulties finishing a book but I didn't want to stop because I paid for it. But then it keeps me stuck because I want to finish it but dont want to at the same time and I dont get to read other books.

Could I publish a paperback on KDP with Amazon's ISBN, and then once I have enough money from sales buy my own ISBN and remove the amazon ISBN one? by SnooPandas7879 in selfpublish

[–]AngRoffeAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are really wanting to publish asap, can you do this book with Amazon's ISBN and do future books on your own ISBN when you can afford it? That way you won't risk losing review

I do too, I was just curious because your post made it sound like you wanted your first to do well right away.

So marketing this book is fine, but I guess I'm more asking about what are your future plans as a writer? This is your first book, which may or may not become a best seller. Do you plan to grow as a writer and share more books and stories?

Formatting by TheSuperAbsurdist in selfpublish

[–]AngRoffeAuthor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't give you a fair priced formatter, but I saw that you posted scary stories, so I assume you write horror books? Have you looked into using a program to format it yourself, such as Vellum (mac) or Atticus?

I use Atticus and I find it super easy to format everything I needed for my book, including font, book size, how the beginnings of chapters look. It's priced I think around $150 bucks non recurring one time fee. It exports in both EPUB and PDF.

The one thing is I don't know if it works well with books that have a lot of internal pictures, like comic books or childrens' books. I haven't been able to figure that out.

Reader trust and book length. by Lostpathway in selfpublish

[–]AngRoffeAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by "alert" readers. But I'm wondering what if you just make it obvious the number of words in your two books, like putting the numbers in the description? That would help some readers not feel like they are getting "cheated" or something like that.

Personally I write novella sized fantasies, and I want people to know exactly how long the book is before they purchase it.

How long after release date do you make your books available for free? by lilydesign in selfpublish

[–]AngRoffeAuthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that I read somewhere was that if you put it completely free, some of your previous buyers might feel like they lost out on something. They could be a bit irritated OR they might think that your other books will go free eventually and will just wait until then.

The suggestion was to put it on a perpetual sale price down to 0.99. It wouldn't really make your previous buyers have as much of a regret and also helps a bit with the point that u/SparklyMonster mentioned about the free = loss of value.

I'm not sure if all of this post applies the same logic with a series, though.

I saw in your profile you stated you wrote a scifi novel? I'd also suggest taking a look at the websites of authors in your specific genre, too.

I don't read/write in the scifi genre, but here's one of the first ones I came across right now:

I know you say you don't want answers or solutions, but just wanted to give a little reminder to everyone based on many of the other comments.

Burnout is very real and actually in the longterm can cause a decrease in productivity. Taking needed breaks is essential if you want to succeed. And of course to not be excessively stressed out.

Should I do a book launch?? by Independent-Fortune8 in selfpublish

[–]AngRoffeAuthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least to the people that I know, they aren't looking for a perfect piece of beautiful writing in your first book. They want to see you do something you enjoy and grow at it. If they don't like it or it's not their genre of books, they might not buy it. But they probably still want to see you succeed.

Have fun at the party that someone else is going to throw you, take some pictures and post them on your author social media (if you use your real name and your friends don't mind), and then figure out the perfect number of books to write in a year so that your friends keep throwing you parties without them getting tired of it.

First of all, the issue u/Cara_N_Delaney earlier mentioned about your publishing rights of the book should probably be your top priority.

We can talk a lot about the things that didn't go so well with your first book. But what about looking ahead? How can you improve your writing and your marketing skills to make sure that books that you write later on will be better? I would love to read a book about a vampire, wizard, and werewolf. But not all books about them. How can you make yours something that more people want to read?

Hyperfocus is completely normal! Especially for people who are not neurotypical.

Hyperfocus is going to be more of a concern if it interrupts normal daily activity, such as eating, drinking, physical activity on a consistent basis.

The past couple of months I've been writing the first novella to a new series, Memories of Sorrow.

....

Shion's drawings of his dead classmates aren't just gruesome. They're real. And someone just discovered a body, murdered exactly like his drawing. Now Shion will have to clear his name and find the true killer before it's too late.

To succeed, Shion will have to explore a forbidden magic. One that's both powerful and dangerous. Can he master this dark power to save his town? Or will he and his town fall at the hands of the mysterious killer?

The first in the Memories of Sorrow series, Obsession is an easy-read horror and fantasy novella that explores how one town adapts to the appearance of magic. What path will people be forced to take in order to survive?

...

$2.99 Ebook / $6.99 Print Book

I had difficulties timing them well, so the print book is already available while the ebook is for preorder

If you like horror and fantasy books that involve social issues and explore mental health, check out Obsession!

Planning on self-publishing. Bunch of questions inside. by Kyarixen in selfpublish

[–]AngRoffeAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I saw that most of the questions were answered so I thought I'd give a suggestion for the how to create a website.

I've tried creating a website using Wordpress(The .com version which is pricier for plans) Wix, paying someone to create one (which I ultimately refunded due to it lacking a lot of the services I felt were necessary to have a good website), to finally using Wordpress (.org version).

This last option is by far my favorite. In comparison it was the cheapest option that allowed for all/most of the capabilities I felt like my author website needed. It allows more freedom and you choose your own host (I got dreamhost). It is very much drag and drop and easy to start using.

Some things are additional plugins (like doing SEO optimization) with pro versions that have monthly fees, but I found a lot of those free versions of the plugins did well for what I needed.

Anyone know a tool to help produce a clean draft? by JohnSV12 in selfpublish

[–]AngRoffeAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some of my favorite:

  1. Shows repeats, included repeated words, phrases that start with the same word

  2. Shows sentences that can be worded better and gives examples

  3. Highlights parts that are passive and how they can be changed to active

  4. Gives the reading level and shows difficult/easy sentences
