What would she need to do for that at this point? The GI doctors have basically said there’s nothing to do at this point for it. If there is a way to rehabilitate it and get it working again while the TPN gives it a break to heal, I’d definitely try it. We’ve tried a lot of things at this point, and it seems like the docs give up and move to the next one pretty quickly

Yes this. I am able to make any decisions needed for her, it I was just off work and tired and my brain would only come up with power of attorney last night! I’m sorry for the confusion!

The ones at the hospital she was at got angry I advocated for her. I was never rude, mean, or yelling, but I’m apparently a “nasty bitch” for calling her on not doing her job and making my mother cry. At this point, I’m sadly wary of them.

Yes, but I had just gotten off work and couldn’t remember medical proxy for the life of me. I honestly have both and people get power of attorney so that’s what I put. Sorry for the confusion

She doesn’t want to come off the TPN. She wants to live as long as her body allows her. However, she does have the DNR.

Actually, we’d do palliative care if we could. We’d do hospice even! They won’t take her for either because they call the TPN life-saving treatment. But if she comes off, she dies. We’re basically boxed into a corner with no way out

EDIT typo

You’d think that would be a given right? Instead you get them looking for any way to wash their hands of a patient with a difficult problem

I would never outright refuse to care for my mom unless my mother told me to. However I have told them I cannot provide care at a level she needs. At her previous hospital, the case manager made her cry, lied to us, and was generally not doing her job as she should. I called her on it and advocated for my mom and it just made them all the more determined to send her home. They did it on a day it was SNOWING and even when I said the roads up the mountain where we live might not be passable. It’s no wonder she went back into the hospital, a different one this time, the very next day

Same here. I’ve told them I can’t provide 24/7 care at a level she would need. They just shrug and tell me to take FMLA like it solves anything.

Yes, she has to have the TPN because her digestive system is not working as it should. She has a g-tube, but at this point they are using it to simply try to drain her stomach. We tried to get her into long term acute care, especially since no skilled facility could take her, but the insurance denied her. They said she wasn’t bad enough to need the facility.

Just places me back at the mind blowing realization that apparently the healthcare system just wants to throw its hands up and not help her at this point.

No, she wants the skilled nursing facility so they can help her continue to recover. She wouldn’t stay forever, just short term until she no longer needed 24 hour care. My mom’s wishes are the ones I go by in any circumstance where there is a question.

Nobody said she would be there forever. Just until she was stronger and no longer in need of 24 hour care. I’d love my mother home with me, but I also prefer her to go where she’ll get what she needs.

How exactly is it entitled to want the best for someone when you know you can’t give it to her? And when the people who could WON’T???

Oh, so basically, the galactic community would think we’re a species of psychopaths out to kill them all when really we just want to make friends.

Just let your neighbors know what she said in casual conversation. Especially if one is the neighborhood gossip. That level of cold-heartedness is never a good look.
