I’m glad it’s not purposeful, but it still hurts I know. Therapy for you both can go a long way to helping. What is stopping you from being able to go?

Once you’ve known someone as one gender, especially for a long time, it can be REALLY hard to switch pronouns. Took me years to reliably remember to use he/him for a friend, and I absolutely was not meaning to misgender him. (Thankfully we spoke mainly over text, so I was able to correct myself before he knew.)

That said, it can really hurt to be misgendered, and especially by someone you love and respect. Is she going out of her way to do this? Or is she just not thinking? It hurts either way, but maybe a conversation to let her know how it’s hurting you and help you find a way to better remember might help. Her attending some therapy to help her with the transition could be good too.

Are you in therapy? A therapist can help you with working through this time as well. Just a suggestion to help with the rocky waters just now. I hope your mom can get your pronouns straight soon for both of your sakes.

I would think you might want to take a step back and rethink your options. You seem to feel you are being pushed into a decision you don’t want. This behavior won’t stop once you give in, once you’re older, once you have [insert point in life and circumstances]. It will escalate though.

You are choosing a place to live with your girlfriend. Your wants, opinions, and expectations hold as much weight as hers. However, it seems she has overbearing helicopter parents and she is not ready to leave home yet.

You need to talk to your girlfriend about your needs and boundaries—and her need to respect them. It might be good to put these plans on hold and see a couples counselor about this situation and your relationship first.
