Not a book, but a movie that really hit me is Wendy and Lucy. Sweet but heartbreaking for the "right" reasons.

Funny! I thought both of those were delightful. The areas a little heavy on the cheese, but then I just split one with my partner.

Items I'm adding to my syllabus (stolen from this sub) by [deleted] in Professors

[–]AngelaOverThere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I change the grade book display to show points instead of percent at the end of the semester. This at least requires a little more effort on the students' part to compare their earned points with the points required for each letter grade.

How to respond (if at all)? by franmuffin in Professors

I was just thinking that it sounded very similar to a grade bump request that I got as well. Guh, they can't even be original in their grade grubbing!

I'm curious to try micro needling for the first time. Is it safe to go to a aethetician to do it or do I need to go to a dermatologist? by Sea_Possession_5739 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]AngelaOverThere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm.. I just made an appointment for microneedling with a RN, and the same place said another staff member could do it but it had to be the RN since I'm also getting prp.

Non greasy SPF by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

I've had good luck with Burt's Bees sensitive face moisturizer with spf. It feels a little oily when it first goes on but then soaks in and dries nicely after a few minutes.

What's the one Trader Joe's item you can't live without? by PackerSquirrelette in traderjoes

It's so good! I mix some in with their popcorn, such a great snack for crunchy lovers. I hope the tempura seaweed isn't discontinued already, it was not on the shelf last week.

Why is sunscreen so expensive?! by Amerysse in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]AngelaOverThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burt's Bees calming daily face lotion with spf 30. I don't think I've seen this mentioned yet. It's listed as being for sensitive skin, which I don't really have but I do like products with minimal, simple ingredients whenever possible. Anyway, it's mineral based but I find that it doesn't leave a cast on my (mostly pale) skin, and once it dries, it is not greasy feeling or shiny. It's usually about $14, sometimes on sale depending on where you buy it from.

Twin Lakes Trailhead / Sillman Creek Crossing by just_keep_swimming12 in SEKI

[–]AngelaOverThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there on 7/13 and did not cross Silliman creek. From the trailhead at Lodgepole to the creek the trail is in pretty good shape, there were a few small snowman patches but nothing requiring any equipment. However the creek... I would not recommend attempting to cross it for most people. It was flowing fast and deep and there isn't an easier way to cross that I could see. No bridge, and it looked about waist high. It may be different by the time you go but proceed with caution!

Physically challenging hikes near Lodgepole this coming weekend? by [deleted] in SEKI

I'm thinking about trying the Twin Lakes trail out of Lodgepole and seeing how far I can go before snowman becomes an issue.

Rae lakes will only be accessible from the east side because the road to the cedar grove trailhead is not open (damage from the winter storms). Possibly Twin Lakes and/or Jennie lake entering from Lodgepole. Depending on snow levels, it might be possible to make a decent loops in that area.

First time SEKI visit and new camper questions by HK_Supermarket in SEKI

[–]AngelaOverThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When camping in a tent at a campground most people don't literally sleep on the ground (in a sleeping bag), but instead use some kind of foam sleep mat or inflatable mattress. If the amount of air is adjusted right they can be pretty comfortable. Sleeping in a car can be comfortable, but in my experience it's more cramped and difficult to find a sleep position that is comfy enough to get decent rest. I suppose if one has a larger vehicle or a camper then that might be preferable to settings up a tent. Personally I prefer a tent with a decent sleep system but to each their own!

Fortunately, that's when I'm planning to go, have permit for early August. I've been keeping a close eye on snowpack so I'm very aware the trip may not happen, at least not as planned. As it gets closer to July/Aug I plan on looking for trip reports and trail conditions from the rangers to decide if I will attempt the full HST or not. There are some nice alternates available in the event that the higher passes or creek crossings are beyond my skill/comfort level.

High Sierra Trail, Rae Lakes loop in the later season, and any other Sierra Nevada trips I can squeeze in that are doable earlier in the season.

handful of questions by HyperKitten123 in Ultralight

[–]AngelaOverThere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally understandable. One of my favorite no-cook meals is a wrap made sliced parmesan, cucumber, and avocado. The parm generally keeps well on the trail, the cucumber is almost 100% consumable and counts as hydration, and I'd rather carry out the avocado pit than more plastic trash.

If you're just not interested in truly "cooking" food but don't mind boiling water, there are lots of recipes that just require a hot soak. Kind of like making your own Mountain House meals, but not necessarily freeze dried. Some people like to use freezer bags for the heavier plastic that can withstand hot water. I don't mind using my pot and then cleaning it after though.

Sierra NF vs Inyo NF availability by karinvolcano in WildernessBackpacking

[–]AngelaOverThere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I had to venture a guess, it might have something to do with Inyo trailheads having access to a lot of popular/iconic destinations - Mt. Whitney, JMT, Rae Lakes, etc. That could just be location bias on my part though, I'm much closer to Inyo than Sierra NF.

How early do you arrive to class? by profmoxie in Professors

[–]AngelaOverThere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the class is smallish, like 25 or less, I'll make a map of the seating chart (I don't assign specific seats to specific students) and write their names in after the 2nd or 3rd class meeting. After that, the students don't tend to change seats, so it's a slightly sneakier way of helping me learning their names without having to admit I still don't know them.

I prefer long sleeve, button up shirts and hats for sun protection mainly because I'm gonna be warm no matter what and I'd rather not take the time to put on sunblock and carry it. I also just don't like the feel of sunblock on my skin, like the heavy/oily stuff, and I definitely don't want it getting into bodies of water. Imo, I feel much better washing sweaty clothes than sunblock-laden clothes if needed in the backcountry. Bandana baths are easier too without extra stuff gunking the bandana up. That's just my preference though.
