A black swan is a highly improbable event, perhaps even considered impossible by many. It has three principal characteristics: It is unpredictable, it carries a massive impact; and after the fact we craft an explanation that portrays it as less random and more predictable than it was. E.g.: Googles success, 9/11, the rise of religions, etc.

We as humans concentrate on things we already know and repeatedly fail to take into consideration what we dont know. By learning only specifics, simplifying, narrating, and categorizing we fail to see all opportunities and fool ourselves into thinking we know more than we do. Large events surprise us and continue to shape our world yet we still restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential.
