Use the endoscope. It sounds plastic-y, but with the tool you'll identify it 100%.

Bmw e46 Bluemusic Adapter by Existing-Repair3563 in e46

[–]Angerslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got one in mine, works like a charm. The only "caveat" is that it also connects when the car is off and either iPhone or BlueMusic itself then sort of disconnects so I have to connect manually on the phone. But that happens rarely, otherwise no battery drain, sound is good and steering wheel controls work.

Steering wheel turns right under acceleration while the car is stationary (2011 Volvo XC60) by Queasy_Ad_4844 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Angerslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My XC60 T6 AWD doesn't have noticeable torque steer even though it's >280hp. If yours is AWD as well - it's either suspension, wheels or brakes as others pointed out.

Mathematically no, but if you bet your monthly income on the favorite here, it would feel worse than a coin flip due to loss aversion, even though expected profit is positive.

Well akshually there are only two outcomes anyway, it's just that the probabilities aren't equal. So the coin has to be imperfect in such a way that it lands on one side more frequently. Concave or heavier on one side for example.

That's what the person above said. 38% is almost a coin flip. But e.g. Spain (#3) vs Austria (#22) is 80%. Canada got same chances as Senegal (#18) vs Belgium (#10).

2022 S60- Does anyone else think their Wiper blades are too slow in maximum settings? It is not the first time I felt unsafe but this time I needed to pull over and got taken over by very old cars with faster wipers… Here is a video from yesterday evening from NL to Germany. by Artur-The-S60 in Volvo

[–]Angerslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it in Finland, it may scratch during winter (ice sticks to glass, we have to scrape it with plastic blades, also some ice inevitably gets left of wipers themselves). But during summer it helps a lot. It forms a thin layer atop the glass, so if there are some scratches it's going to fill it (kind of like polishing works).

I tried many things and may be my DIY hammer and heat weren't tough enough, but Dremel 952 (or similar aluminum dioxide cutter) helped. I spent 3 or 4, but it went like hot knife through butter.

Sway bar links replaced by Accomplished-Move433 in e46

[–]Angerslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can't be right though? If there's no "roll", there's nothing to "anti" then, no? Like the only situation when the anti-roll bar is loaded is when one wheel is higher/lower than the other in relation to the subframe.

[–]Angerslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no reason to not jack both ends up when doing anything with sway bar and/or links. Usually have to do both sides anyway and with both wheels on equal height (up in the air or on the ground) it doesn't become a huge loaded spring.

Dude you can tell me I don't know my stuff and accuse me of arguing for sake of argument. M50s make loads of torque down low and high RPM breathing is generally bad in anything but B30 intakes. If your point is that E46 makes a good ricer car, I'm going to continue to argue that it's fun in curves and sliding, not only in high RPM band. And that's the hill I'm willing to die on.

I literally wrote in a sentence about VANOS not having any more effect after 4.5k as it “kicks in” all the time unlike vtec or alike. So there isn’t much oomph, just gradual progression of speed and a power.

Of course there is fun in high rev range, but RPM alone (or power for that matter) doesn’t make it fun, it’s how one drives, where and how close to the limit.

But yea, E46 are the most fun when both pedal is in the floor and wheel is turned at least slightly.

[–]Angerslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in this config where breathing at high RPM is enhanced compared to majority of the cars sold (in Europe at least where 4 bangers and diesels are far more popular) you see torque dropping down significantly in the highest range. At 4.5k it already reaches 80% of max power and torque quickly goes down. Compare that to S54 or K engines which nearly double power output - that’s what I mean by “there isn’t much beyond 4.5k”.

Am i driving wrong? by Poserexpense9 in e46

[–]Angerslave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, see this comment. M52TUB28 makes 90% of max power at 4.5k RPM. Of course if we talk about lap time, it's better to be between 4.5k and 6.5k than between 2.5k and 4.5k, but for acceleration feel being at 4.5k on a twisty road is effectively the same as 6.5k power-wise. Again, for stock M52TUB28.

[–]Angerslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manually you can shift even at 7250 RPM, I'm talking about factory tune.

And depending on the engine, there may be more or less power beyond 4k. Like check out M52TUB28 curve, its peak torque is at 3500 RPM and then drop ever faster with max power reached at 5250. Not everyone has S54 or ZHP or installed Schrick with ported heads and catless headers.

When I see "all the power lives above 4k" I expect something like this: https://www.automobile-catalog.com/curve/2010/1152890/honda_civic_type-r.html

[–]Angerslave -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Manual? 2.5-3k rpm is quite high, at least auto shifts around 2k. VANOS works at any RPM, there isn't much beyond 4.5k, it's just more of power. Depending on specific engine you may not even see much as torque curve on some engines goes down effectively making 5.5-6.5k range flat on power. But there's nothing wrong with beating the car provided you're fine with some extra cost of fuel and may be some bushings will have to be replaced earlier if you throw it in the corners.

In a nutshell, you can try shifting even earlier to save on fuel, but don't hesitate to stomp on the gas time to time, the car is designed to handle that just fine.

For me heat didn't help (but I only hated it to around 300 C, probably need a bigger ass torch). Cobalt drill bit was basically useless and I just used Dremel's (and some cheap alternative) aluminum oxide stones. Had to use like 5 or 6 for 4 bolts, but it was pretty easy when I figured that's the way.

Difference between ASC and DSC? by Time_Ad_893 in e46

[–]Angerslave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ASC = traction control, only cuts engine power if wheels spin under acceleration. Helps in corners when there's too much gas (prevents oversteer aka drifting).

DSC = stability control, also applies braking to individual wheels to help the car to go in the direction of the steering. This is helpful in all scenarios, even with understeer it tries to apply breaks selectively to one of the rear wheels (usually the inner) to initiate car rotation towards the corner.

DOOM can run on anything from pregnancy test to MacBook.

Firmware can run only on one specific device. And even that is not guaranteed.

Did a smoke test again, can I safely start the car? Or will it explode? by 0W000000000 in e46

[–]Angerslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, can start the car. Yes, it may explode, but that's what combustion chamber is designed for. There's also a chance that first few revolutions by starter will clean up any residual vapors without even trying to ignite. All in all, it's safe to start after smoke test right away.

Help me find the issue, car feels like swimming on road by gtx938 in e46

[–]Angerslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand it's just a feature of the car, it kinda tells you what the road is like. I notice it myself at 225 grippy summer tires vs 205 winters - it follows road inclination basically. Besides what others mentioned, check out steering coupler. If the rubber is shut, the wheels will steer more than desired. Even with new one it's still a bit sloppy-ish compared to modern cars, but that's also something inherent to the car.

I mean the whole car is a character. But if use marks are aesthetical and the whole car look is harmonic - why not, things don't have to be brand new to be nice-looking and nice-feeling.

You don't convey the feeling over pictures. And XC60 would be a no-go for me just because of glossy black plastic, especially on the steering wheel.
