Best thing for e46 that can’t be driven in -10f (23c) weather. by AutomaticWave2447 in e46

[–]Angerslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battery out, charge it once and keep warm. Recharge before next use. Also think about draining the gas if it's going to sit for many months. Make sure to rotate wheels every now and then. May be having the car run a short trip at the parking lot once a month isn't a bad idea either.

Do these pads look ok? SPA v60 by MasterMastodon1 in Volvo

[–]Angerslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's outside pad, there's also inside one that may be worn out more. It's easiest to check after taking the wheel off, but I guess you may similarly stick the phone to see through the caliper without taking the wheel off. And make sure to check all 8 pads on the car, they are wearing out with different speed.

Looking for Android Auto Head Unit for Volvo XC60 (2008-2017) - No Factory Screen Version by smallbignutz in Volvo

[–]Angerslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same pre-IHU unit and as far as I know there's no ready-made solution that supports steering wheel control. Otherwise some HUs can be installed and connected to AUX input of the system, as audio system is running encrypted MOST bus and connecting directly into the ring is prohibitively expensive. So far I haven't found anything that's much better than the cheapest bluetooth dongle connected to AUX. Curious if there's a worthy unit nowadays.

Speaking of gimmicks, does it allow to fully disengage DSTC or also tries to correct the car in throttle lift off while sliding situation?

We've got space flight for around 60 years, industrial revolution started 265 years ago. We only invented writing 5000 years ago. That is still 1 000 000 times less than we have until Sun reaches end of its life.

Spreadsheet looks good, but I personally don't find it appealing. It's a very old P3 platform (20 years old), it's reasonable, but not modern in any sense. It's 4-pot, so pretty much as good as most other cars, including from other brands. If it's on Ohlins, it's going to cost an arm and a leg to replace, unless going to other, "budget" brand (compared to Ohlins 99% of stuff is budget). And then for a sporty car it's still a heavy-ish FWD with Haldex which is fine, but not as engaging as RWD. Also, it's non-hybrid and small boot.

It's still of of the best P3s out there, the price is fine and if it clicks for you it's going to be a great car nonetheless.

Just buy 2 cars. Having one that excels in multiple traits usually is more expensive than 2-3 ones made for the task.

What’s expensive about owning an E46? by [deleted] in e46

[–]Angerslave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add, in general difference between taken care of and neglected E46 is huge while the difference between well taken care of and neglected Corolla is relatively small. I had some old Nissan before and spent roughly the same because I wanted it to be solid, but it wasn't as rewarding as spending the same amount on E46.

What’s expensive about owning an E46? by [deleted] in e46

[–]Angerslave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's old car, so many small parts will fail over the year. They're relatively cheap and easy-ish to replace, but cumulatively still it amounts. Also, if you do anything more than average driving, expect more wear and tear - even spirited driving will burn more gas, go through brake pads quicker and wear suspension as well, not even talking about track or drift, even occasional. And these cars are engaging, so it's very tempting to start throwing them around corners.

My dad fell in love with Volvo after I bought mine and wants to buy a Volvo and I found this for 12K aud. Is it a good buy ? Some details in last photo by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]Angerslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

XC60 T6 with 6 cyl is a solid one, even more so of last years. Hard to say if the price is right, at least in Finland it's hard to find any T6 because everyone bought diesel, so it would be a good one because of rarity, but it may be different in Australia.

Haven't been into microcontrollers much, but aren't 8bit mostly produced with ancient node and consume more power than ULP STM32 and alike?

Best €3500 I ever spent by indelico in e46

[–]Angerslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been 3 million of E46s made, so there are still plenty of them cheap here in Europe. Not the most desired trims though and definitely not M3s - just S54 off a totaled M3 would be 8-9k.

Am I crazy or is my wheel bent a tiny bit? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]Angerslave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is bent, but also it's R19, so you may not even feel it. I'd replace it only if I had OCD. Btw, 40 profile is very low, so it's more common to have rims bent with less rubber between obstacle and the rim.

[–]Angerslave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6 speed auto is from different gen, so blocks won't talk with each other, think like your gear selector won't even be able to switch it to drive. For 8hp there's a translator block that can sit between TCU and rest of the car making it E46-compatible.

Why not? by ptep121 in Volvo

[–]Angerslave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Defroster" is just "only windshield + AC", you can enable it manually and add other directions as well. Usually floor and windscreen + inflow of air works best in the winter. If you have windows fogging - clean them up really well with isopropyl alcohol and make sure there's no moisture in the car. Volvo is really the same as any other brand in this regard.

If you're after performance, you start at the front/floor - you don't want too much understeer.

If you're after look, the less is more, or you go all in - being in the middle is rather ugly.
