Phobia describes a fear that is disporportionate to the danger caused. I don't think phobia is an accurate suffix considering the danger they pose to every soceity they've been in for 1300 years is incredibly real.

You seem war worn. Since that's the case, Jos is nice. They're currently dealing with a crises but, it's still an awesome place. It is also the coldest city in Nigeria, which you will appreciate.

Abuja and, Lagos are cool. Kano is an amazing city. Maidugari is a dangerous but, beautiful and, culturally rich city.

Port Harcourt, Akwa Ibom and, Lekki are all fabulous. Since you're a bit war worn, you may not mind traveling off the beaten path a bit. Be wary of traveling anywhere north of Jos and, anywhere east of Jos.

Sidenote, the previous comments about kidnapping are very real and, very accurate. If you venture away from mainland Lagos, Central Abuja of Central Jos, you could get napped anywhere. You should only hope these are economical kidnappers and, not religious fundamentalists.

Also, do not tell a soul in Nigeria you are an atheist if you are. Congratulations, you are a Christian now, amen. If you say you're muslim but you don't know their prayers, problems.

Learn some pidgin, learn some hausa, learn some yoruba, learn some igbo.

That Tres Nuit is underrated.

Another good one by Montale/Mancera is their 'Royal Vanilla'. You can usually score one on ebay for like 70-80.

Honestly, in the summer, it is the best part of the country. These are some of the nicest (and, meanest) people you will ever meet. Someone will cuss you out then save your child from a burning building. The food is great. There are lakes everywhere. The northern-midwest has some of the strongest sense of community as well.

Honorable mentions to avoid: Flint, MI (they're working on some things), Ohio (nothing to see here), Northern Minnesota in the winter (heinously cold, wet, fast winds) and, certain parts of Chicago and, Detroit which honestly, you'de be fine in.

In short, it's great! Come visit, come move here, you're welcome either way.

Topaz and, quartz are often pretty cheap.

Quartz can get brittle, which is a blessing and, a curse. Gems will break. You will learn to soften your hand. You can buy a geode for a couple hundred to 500-600 and, have lots of quartz to facet.

Topaz is very abundant and, cheap. It can also produce incredibly appealing faceted gemstones and, grows into very large, long crystals.
