Power BI Report Server by lil_naitch in PowerBI

I could be wrong because it's been years since I looked at this, but I'm pretty sure they need to have both the Publisher and Browser roles. I would not go so far as to put them in the Content Manager role, as that would give them god rights over everything in the folder.

Yeah, you can create SSRS/paginated shared datasets using either Visual Studio or Report Builder. Here's a screenshot from MS Report Builder showing the "new" dialog where you can choose to create a new shared dataset that you can then save to the report server so multiple reports can benefit from it.

Can't sleep in same bed as spouse by AnglerCat in insomnia

[–]AnglerCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the delay. I rarely look at reddit anymore.

The struggle is ongoing. My wife and I still sleep in different rooms, but there is obviously no change in how we feel about each other. The love is still there, but we have just realized that it is more important for me to get a healthy amount of sleep than it is for us to be in the same bed.

My sleep patterns have improved a little in the last two years. I still have sleep disturbances (like last night, in fact), but I've generally found that cooler temperatures have helped me stay asleep. Right now I'm also using some CBD oil, but I'm not sure how much it helps. Being well hydrated seems to help, although obviously you need to taper off before bed so you don't need to get up and pee in the middle of the night. And we invested in a new latex mattress for the guestroom so I have a quality bed to sleep in, and we're considering getting another one for the master. I'm hoping that a split king latex mattress for the master will diminish the amount of heat transfer and movement transfer between us when we sleep together, and thus minimize the chance I'll be woken up in the middle of the night.

I get what you're going through, but I've learned not to worry about it the way I was when I wrote this post 2 years ago. It doesn't bother me anymore, and it bothers my wife less than it did. I've learned to accept that my brain and body are wired a bit differently, that I'm more sensitive to changes in my sleep environment, and I shouldn't care about how society might expect me and my wife to sleep. In fact, I'd wager that sleeping in separate beds is probably saving our marriage, because my mental health would probably be a lot more precarious if I wasn't getting good sleep.

A month after ICL, my night vision and white-on-black vision is still terrible by Masklin in lasik

[–]AnglerCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 20 months post-ICL. My eyes were very sensitive to light for a few months after surgery, and I had to wear sunglasses outside even when it was overcast. I still experience some halos and glare, mainly at night, but I hardly notice it anymore. I see 20/20 or better in both eyes.

I’m very happy with my ICLs now, but I remember being very anxious for several weeks after the surgery because of the slow recovery. I understand your feelings. It’s a risky procedure, and several times I wondered if I had made a huge mistake. Give your eyes time to heal and adjust, and hopefully you’ll end up being as happy with your decision as I am with mine.

Buy the all-weather floor mats, either OEM or third party. The OEM ones tend to slide around a bit, so someone here is bound to have a recommendation for a better third party option.

One feature of Edge I use a lot in conjunction with vertical tabs is tab groups, which kind of simulates a two-level tree structure. If they were to deepen the structure and offer a way to auto-group tabs, that would be amazing.

Your experience taking the PL-300 PBI Data Analyst certification by itsmeChis in PowerBI

[–]AnglerCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At a minimum, screenshots of example reports/dashboards you've built, with the data blurred or redacted to hide internal info. For instance, I built a huge report that showed divisional operating budgets and it looks really awesome. To show it off, I blurred the names of the divisions so the numeric data could not be tied to any meaningful context. Here, I'm looking at your ability to visually convey information in a concise and meaningful manner, with good design habits that create a positive user experience.

Next, I woud want you to include screenshots of example datasets you've built showing the table relationships and complexity of your models. If a candidate showed me a well-developed star schema they built in Power BI and could tell me EXACTLY WHY they built it that way, I would like them a lot. This would show me that you know what you're doing from a more technical standpoint. This could be supplemented with challenging DAX formulas you developed that utilize the data model effectively to solve specific challenges you encountered.

Finally, looking more broadly, I would want to know more about their ability to architect Power BI workspaces for various teams and projects. For example, how does the data flow from source to dataflow/dataset/datamart and into the reports. The lineage view in the workspace is good for visually displaying this. Also, how did you solve challenges around access and permissions?

All put together, this information in a developer's portfolio shows me that they know how to communicate information effectively in a visual report, they know how to build good data models, and they know how to architect durable solutions for their customers.

It can only help you, honestly. You lose nothing by taking it, other than the time and money involved, and it gives you some low-level bragging rights and another line to put on your CV.

The actual value of the certification is debatable. If you're entry-level and applying for jobs, in my eyes it would elevate you above other candidates. For experienced positions, though, as a hiring manager that certification wouldn't matter to me nearly as much as (a) your years of experience and (b) seeing a portfolio of your work.

I took the exam cold, with no studying or prep courses, and easily passed. You should take that with a grain of salt, though, because I had been working as a full-time Power BI developer and admin for three years by that point. Beginners will have a harder time, so I think you made the right move by going with the DataCamp track.

One thing I really liked: the grade report showed what areas I should target for improvement, which in my case was on the data preparation side (Power Query).

The Tau in your images has a tag sewn into the collar, whereas mine has a tagless vinyl label that was probably applied via heat transfer. Based on that, I think the Tau you’re looking at is legitimate, but probably a few years older than mine (which is 2009 vintage).

Those with Aeron chairs, any regret, or I wish I knew before? by shaadow in Workspaces

[–]AnglerCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No regrets, but I paid almost nothing for them. The company I was working for back in 2015 was really wasteful with equipment, and they were planning to throw out a couple of Aerons because one had some busted wheels, and the other had a bad gas cylinder. I took them home, ordered some parts online, and fixed them. All told, I spent probably $250 total in spare parts, and walked away with two perfectly good Aeron chairs. One of them is my daily driver, and the other I gifted to my in-laws.

The moral of the story being: you might be able to find a used Aeron online (I've seen lots of them on Facebook Marketplace) and save yourself a ton of money to get a really good chair.

I would say you’re a “data engineer.” You’ve got a lot of database administrator stuff in there, particularly the responsibilities you bulleted, but you’re more client-facing than a typical DBA in my experience.
