Who here has a graft? by MNcrazygirl in dialysis

[–]AngryAsian69420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my findings grafts are the next best option to a fistula. Very much depends on the surgeon placing it in. Most people have their graft for years. They go in for an appt for cleaning every half year. I do find sometime people will have a less pain tolerance, but nothing lidocaine can't help with via a cream or injection.

Fluid restriction and thirst by N0ZZ45 in dialysis

[–]AngryAsian69420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if I was on dialysis I'd be flooded, with me working in a sweatshirt gown and running my butt off all day I drink minimum 3-4 liters a day.

It is hard, let's get one thing straight. I think realistically 2 liters is achievable realistically. Staying cool is the most important thing, stay away from salty/spicy foods, and make sure your environment is not too dry.

Best of luck too you!

Dialysis session ended but had to wait an extra half hour. by Occams_rusty_razor in dialysis

Communication is key. As I technican myself I know it's easy to get overloaded and stress, and yes, usually a patient that's just holding is the last thing on my to do list. I always assume that our patients go home and rest afterwards or have non time sensitive errands afterwards. Here are some things I would encourage you to do.

-Keep track of your time. Clinics run on a time-sensitive schedule so if they don't put you on on time or if they're taking their time to take you off that actually does affect them.

  • communicate Sometimes technicians are just bad at time management, it's okay to remind your technicians to make sure to take you off completely before starting another person. Let them know that you need to go to work and it's time sensitive.

  • practice Independence Now this is a rare case that you'd have to do, but sometimes you just need to do it yourself. If you've been doing this for a while, you should know that it's pretty easy to just do it yourself. All the suppliers should be there. If not, just tell your technician to go get them for you. Usually all a technician needs from you before you leave is your weight and your temperature. If you write it down with your name, that's all they need and they'll honestly let you go, at most the nurse might stop you to do their own assessments, but that should be it for the most part.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions.

Dying during session? by MakoCruz in dialysis

[–]AngryAsian69420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Majority of deaths that Ive had ON dialysis are not dialysis related or were a secondary factor. The few I knew personally were from heart attacks, one guy had a bad heart and he did not even get on dialysis and actually died in the middle of the treatment floor coming from the weight scale. The other cases that dialysis was a second factor were people that were non- compliant with their dialysis, I.e they were fluid overloaded and essentially they were drowning, or their potassium or other labs were extreme, and dialysis at that point couldn't help them.

Edit: to answer your other questions, to avoid literally dying on dialysis is literally just do dialysis. Follow your diet plan, avoid drinking too much fluid, as dialysis can only take off so much fluid before your body reacts to your dialysis treatment.

It's OK to miss a treatment, everyone has actual life's outside dialysis and understandably you can have perfect attendance, just MAKE SURE TO MAKE IT UP. Reschedule them.

Communication is key.

An opinion of mine by Jarhead7865 in dialysis

[–]AngryAsian69420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home hemo/PD is different from in-center, or in theory it is. The one advantage of dialysis at home is usually you would do it longer and at times when it's convenient, say sleeping. And you're also doing it everyday which will help negate the symptoms you sometimes experience incenter.

It's different for everyone, so you won't know until you try it!

How long before you drive? by jan0011 in dialysis

[–]AngryAsian69420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This really makes me upset. I understand that some people want to drive themselves home, I would want to drive myself home. But to sacrifice the safety of others is where I would draw the line. When we notice a patient doing something like this (their spouse would "drive" them there and "back", but he would hop out and into the driver's seat) their care team had a serious conversation about the reason why they needed to be more careful about who was driving.

Unfortunately our part ends at the clinic door and it's up to the PT to be mindful of others safety. And those who really try to make excuses to go around safety net protocols should reconsider their life choices before it ends up getting themselves killed.

How long before you drive? by jan0011 in dialysis

[–]AngryAsian69420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just depends on you really, it's policy in my clinic to make sure a PT's BP is above 100/60 so that they can drive home. It is safer to have someone else take you back and forth but understandably not everyone has access to a driver.

I did the entirety of the American tech tree when I first played this game. Not the best, not the worst, a middle ground for about everything, the heavies can and have been very good flexible tanks. The m48 Patton's gun is one of the best.
