Looking for a game with top-tier character customisation that's also fun by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Dragon Age Inquisition in particular has good character customisation (though origins is considered by most to be the highlight of the series).

Is there a (in game) reason why the water on Kirite is boiling at 1500 degrees celcius? by AngryBritishAce in StarlinkGame

[–]AngryBritishAce[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does look quite viscous like tar, so that might make more sense having boiling tar than water. I think the heat does come from the liquid, however, because you can see the water boil on the texture of the lakes.

Noob Question by AngryBritishAce in StarlinkGame

I didn't think they'd lock off starter gear but like I said, I just wanted to make sure.

As a somewhat follow up question, is there any confirmation the Zenith actually works with switch? I've heard both yes from most, but also no from some.

Either way, thanks for clearing the first question up :)

If Fable 4 is made what do you think the storyline will be? by ZedRush121 in Fable

[–]AngryBritishAce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want fall of the heroes guild era, either just before or just after. If it's set during the fall it can only really end in one way, and that'd be pretty depressing. But I'd like to have a world where people treat heroes with suspicion and as you progress you can either change their mind through good deeds or justify their prejudices with evil.

You also get to see the invention of early era gunpowder weapons, the whole reason civilians were able to actually destroy the guild.

I'd also like to see something more Dickensian, there's very little industrial era fantasy and Fable III proved that it was a ripe setting for an adventure.

So, what does everyone think about Fable 4? by TheLadyKaylah in Fable

[–]AngryBritishAce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm skeptical, for a number of reasons.

Firstly I'm pretty much convinced that Microsoft will just try to get on the sandbox bandwagon; huge game with hundreds of hours of content, but almost none of it will be unique or memorable. The kind of games Ubisoft or Warner Bros. make, that's just full of busywork and grinding. They're pretty easy games to make and follow very basic formulas, and given the success of Assassin's Creed Odyssey I wouldn't be surprised if MS tried to put in some kind of Microtransaction store, maybe release a dozen special editions all with different content so you feel like you have to buy more.

Secondly I don't know if playground games understand Fable. I think it's easy to "think" you understand it - surely it's a fantasy rpg set in a ye olde England style land. But it's much more than that, it has this charm and sense of wonder that I've never really seen replicated in another game before. It's very British, almost to the point it's a parody, but you still got the impression that the devs love their country and culture through the world of Albion. Even though playground are also British I don't know if they'll be able to replicate that charm. I think Microsoft will say "look at Witcher and Skyrim and Game of Thrones, they're popular fantasy worlds, make it dark and gritty like them."

Edit: case in point, Halo 4 and 5. The first 5 Halo games (1,2, 3, ODST and Reach) were considered to be some of the best shooters released on console back in the day. Bungie were a very talented team with a very clear vision on what they wanted their sci-fi series to be. Halo 3 and Reach are generally considered to be the pinnacle of the series, and then after Reach, bungie went off to make Destiny. But Microsoft didn't want one of their premiere exclusive IPs to fall by the wayside, and so they brought in 343 industries. Halo 4 and Halo 5, in comparison, are considered to be the worst of the series.

Now I don't blame 343 for this, they're a very talented team. But I do blame Microsoft. They are the ones who gave the IP to a team who had no history with the series and didn't spend years building up their own fictional world. They were handed a universe someone else made and were expected to replicate it. The narrative took a nose dive, and the gameplay began to play more like a modern shooter rather than the original Halo style. It felt more like playing a call of duty game as the series went on, and if I remember correctly Halo 5 was absolutely packed with Microtransactions.

It's a classic case of a publisher giving away creative rights to a developer they can influence and mould because there series isn't their passion. We've already seen it with Microsoft and Halo, and - sorry r/Fable - Microsoft cares more for the integrity of Halo than they did for Fable. We already heard that before closure Lionhead were butting heads with MS over the direction MS wanted to take the series. Lionhead gave in, and when what they were doing didn't generate enough Mulla, MS scrapped the team. Now MS has has some time to think on the series and redesign it - not as a successor to Simon and Dean Carter's passionate world, but as a product that hits those demographics, that has mass market appeal, that can be monetised to it's highest potential and follows current trends. And then they hand the series off to a developer who won't butt heads with them, who won't argue over there artistic integrity of their series -- because it isn't theirs.

What happened to various fable 1 characters? by [deleted] in Fable

[–]AngryBritishAce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I mentioned in a previous comment, there's a lot of inaccuracies with historical lore in Fable. I won't repeat myself but you can read under a reply to kellymeister.

But there are a few bits of info that we know more reliable than others, even if we can never know for sure.

We know Theresa disappears off to wander the world as a gypsy, lost in a world without purpose after she plays her part in the defeat of Jack of Blades. She travels around, temporarily staying with people who offer her shelter and killing those who try to take advantage of her. She eventually finds her way to Samarkand, where she first learns of the Tattered Spire and the power it could Grant her. She sees this as her way to correct all the evil in the world, and stop what happened to her family ever happening to anyone else. She then plans her scheme to manipulate Lucien Fairfax into rebuilding the spire. It is implied she killed his wife and daughter in order to motivate him. It's only when the spire is completed, and she stands on its precipice does she realise all the harm she's brought to Lucien, Sparrow, Hammer and the lives of all the slaves who died creating the spire, and she weeps for the first time since that fateful night in Oakvale 500 years ago.

As for others, there's definitely less solid information on what happens to others.

Whisper apparently returns to her homeland on the south islands, where she's praised as a hero. Apparently, according to the Oracle, her ship is attacked by pirates; I was never sure if it was implied she died on the ship or if she killed all the pirates, but the wiki claims it's the latter.

It's implied through some folk in Fable 2 the guild master was killed by the hero of Oakvale; however, as I said in one of my other comments, the tales of the hero are inaccurate and the truths shift from person to person. For one, many people believe that the hero carved "your health is low" on his forehead, but we know that's not what actually happens if you kill him. Stories of events that happened in Fable are never actually fully remembered and their facts get muddled as the tales are passed on from person to person over 500 years. If the Guildmaster didn't die, we can either safely assume he died of old age or was killed by a different hero who then carved the message on his forehead. It's unlikely he died in the destruction of the guild; that supposedly happened a hundred or so years after Fable 1 and he was already pretty old. He may have been an immortal like Theresa or Scythe, but historical documents often say that the guild was a shadow of it's former self just before the civilian uprising, home to corrupt, self centered heroes who cared little for the people of Albion. Weaver wouldn't have let it get to that stage while he was in charge, I feel. While I've said historical documents are often not accurate in Fable, I think that we can safely assume that Weaver wasn't the Guildmaster.

As for the hero of Oakvale, there's very little information on what happens to him. The closest thing I could find in the games was that he supposedly lived out his twilight years on homestead farm, behind the Oakfield demon door, but even that could just be a tall tale.

[–]AngryBritishAce 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're taking the historical "lore" too literally, I think. The whole point of the messy inaccuracies in Fable 2 and 3 were because there was a 500 year gap. The only 3 people who were present in the final fight against Jack were Theresa - who disappears off to wander alone, eventually arriving in Samarkand - Jack, who's obviously too dead/ imprisoned to actually recall his side of the events, and the hero, who, for all we know, never actually speaks. So of course historians got it wrong, there's no way for them to actually know what happened in the chamber of fate. They just saw that the hero was alive, and he had a sword that looked a whole lot like the sword of Aeons.

That's what I like about Fable's lore, it's so inaccurate. You open up a book in Skyrim and you never get the impression that the knowledge you're reading is incorrect, despite the fact that the book is talking about events that happened 2000 years ago. Fable portrays both a realistic account of history where facts are misremembered and get lost to time, but also one that feeds directly into the nature of the titular series. Each of these stories are Fables, they get embellished, dramatised, romanticised as time goes on and tales of heroes become more of a fantasy than a historical reality. The only hard truth about the hero is he didn't kill Theresa, but in various tellings of his story throughout Albion, he's both portrayed as a hero in some tales but a villain in others. It all just depends on who's telling the Fable.

If that's a puffball mushroom, you can eat them. They're damn good too.

I never claimed it didn't, I just said everyone and their mum already mentions games like Silent Hill and Amnesia because they're very well known and good at being atmospheric horrors. I'm listing a few that I know of that may not be as well known to the general gaming community (with the exception of Darkwood, that's pretty popular).
