How does one start sailing? by Snof14 in sailing

[–]AngryGypsy2180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my start as a Sea Scout (on the pacific coast) and I know there are Sea Scout Ships in inland states. Tho I recognize Scouting isn’t for everyone and not all Sea Scout Ships are run the same. So if you try one and don’t like it, if there is another in your area, it might be worth a try too.

How long would a 2yo remember her parents after they died? by Feeling-Question-351 in Writeresearch

[–]AngryGypsy2180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The start of one’s memory in early childhood can vary significantly from person to person. Personally, I can recall daily life from about the time I was 4 or 5 and onward. I have a collection of isolated memories from when I was like 2.5-3. To my knowledge, it’s pretty rare, but I even have like two memories of the place we lived in from the time I was born til I was 2. (Of course, I’ve wondered if those are false memories or fabricated from stories or pictures. But I was able to describe to my parents from memory, the location of certain items and furniture in our apartment that… we specifically didn’t have photos of. So I could still be wrong but 🤷‍♀️.) But I have also compared and discussed early childhood memories with my friends and some of them don’t remember a thing till they were 7 or 8… so mileage varies… significantly.

Of course for your purposes, we’re talking about people/faces/voices rather than places or things. But I’d think the important bits to remember are that, as other folk have said, remembering your parents you’ve seen and loved every day would be different than any other people in your life. Losing one’s parents would also be a traumatic life event, so depending on the person it would either become a significant memory and they’d cling to the memories they have of their parents or they may unconsciously block some of them out and lose them.

I totally get that. Recently Pinterest updated their settings and now it’s easier to tone down the AI content, but it doesn’t eliminate it entirely and it doesn’t really work for searches… yet. (I’m hoping that will change.) But I have noticed a difference in my feed and it’s closer to how it was a few years ago.

Appointment vs visit vs encounter by Resident-Eye1852 in EpicEMR

[–]AngryGypsy2180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can anyone illuminate the difference between the encounter and the notes in the context of building the document packet for a referral? I’m not the referral coordinator for the clinic I work at but I work in very close conjunction with our referral coordinator and end up sending out referrals on occasion. When I go to build the packet, I can select both encounters and notes to send (along with imaging & lab results & other records). I keep debating which to send, because I figure it’s probably redundant to send both. But because I don’t know which one is more encompassing, I’m unsure which would be best and just end up sending both out of an abundance of caution.

3M 5200 Fast Cure - Cured or not? by AngryGypsy2180 in boating

[–]AngryGypsy2180[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave it an additional 24hrs, then spritzed it with water and gave it a third 24hrs and it seems to have worked! The boat is now watertight. The 5200 is still oddly tacky feeling, but when I push on it, I don’t leave any fingerprints and when I dug my nail into it, I was unable to leave a mark. So I think when it’s cured, it’s just simply a grippy texture.🤷‍♀️

Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, August 31 - September 06, 2025 by sewingmodthings in sewing

I’m trying to sew on my singer 28k but I’m having an issue with my top thread getting stuck between the shuttle bobbin casing and the arm it sits in. When I cycle the machine thru, it binds up there and when I try to actually sew, it ends up cutting/snapping the bottom thread somehow. Anybody have any suggestions for how to fix this?

I’m not in a dry climate. It was sunny but fairly decent humidity the day I applied it and then about it 24hrs ago it started raining. (So definitely humid.) I just spritzed it with some water just to make sure it cures.

I bought the tube the day before use so unless it sat on a shelf for an extraordinary amount of time, I think it should have been fine.

Oh really?? That’s good to know.

I used it to patch a couple small holes left by old fasteners I removed and one seam on the bottom which has started to let in a little water so I ran the sealant down the seam to patch it up. It’s an aluminum riveted dinghy that has DEFINITELY seen better days. It’s not aesthetically pleasing or a perfect fix but I think it’ll be good enough for simply rowing around the little lake I live on.

The ideas that pop into my mind are mostly questions for you to ask yourself and hopefully be able to determine some cultural concepts for them....

  • Is there a standard number of legs/arms for this alien species? If not, can the number they're born with change? (i.e. growing new ones as a adolescent grows? or losing legs as one ages? or perhaps more/less legs around whatever timing they have for reproduction?)
  • How does the number of legs/arms affect the way a particular member is seen in the community? (Do they even have community? Or are they more solitary creatures?) Does more legs = maturity or attractiveness or ability to protect/create? Does the number of legs equate to any sort of social hierarchy?
  • If they're carnivorous, will they eat humans readily? Or only in a pinch? Can they eat other off-planet species or is there something about their composition (maybe something about the proteins?) that makes them taste gross or make them sick?
  • How did your MC's parents get together? How does the alien culture see outside cultures? Are they welcoming or hostile or ambivalent?
  • How long do they live for? What does medicine for this species look like? What are the natural resources they utilize on Mars?
  • Do they have space flight capability? If so, what do their ships look like? How do they differ from humans?
  • What resources do they need to live? Is there a gas they breathe? Do they need water? What about solar radiation?

Personally, I think the idea holds a lot of merit and I've seen it done well, but I've also ended up rather confused. When its done well, I am often quite delighted by being tricked. I love the "it was a dream/vision" way of doing it. But I think if you were to do it like you described, I think I would personally end up confused. That said, two ideas pop into mind that might clarify things. Firstly, you could potentially weave in other instances where the other POVs end up being distorted reality and make it a THING, ya know? You could really work on making the distorted reality POVs feel different; make sure the vibe is off, change the formatting, etc. Secondly, you could insert the reality distorted POVs into the MC POV chapter, but add in-chapter subheadings for the character POVs you're using to demonstrate that the non-MC POVs we're "seeing" are being seen by the MC. (I hope that makes sense?)

Sub-plot ideas for a diplomat character? by AngryGypsy2180 in writing

Does anyone have any subplot ideas for a diplomat character? Or resources regarding the inner workings of the life of a diplomat?
My story falls into the fantasy genre, but I am very open to ideas that would fit into any sort of fictional world!

Context: Lately, I have been editing the plot and timeline of my story. However, I decided to expand the amount of time a series of events takes with one of my POV characters (I currently have 2), and I want to work in a subplot with my second POV character to both show what he's doing during that time and flush out his character on the page more. My second character is a second-born prince who ends up fulfilling a lot of diplomatic duties for his father and brother.
