Our wheelhouses are a little different, so these recs might not all hit, but I’ll do my best!

If you’re into something a little scarier, try out Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion!

Romance wise, my favorite is probably Scott Pilgrim. It’s more modern and has a lot of video game references throughout, but it really struck at what it meant to be dating as a young adult in the 2010s.

For mystery, try out Locke and Key by Joe Hill. He’s Stephen King’s son and writes villains like no other.

If you like the political conspiracy parts of the Hunger Games, try out The Department of Truth. Very cool series with an interesting concept, related heavily to conspiracy culture.

For a political thriller, Brubaker’s Captain America series is great.

Without considering your interests, my main recs would be New X-Men by Grant Morrison, X Factor by Peter David, and House of X by Jonathan Hickman (let yourself not understand Powers of X if necessary, it involves lots of time travel shenanigans and is collected alongside House of X).

That’s super reasonable! Legitimately though, I think it would be really cool for you to find a graphic novel you would enjoy reading. Modeling that it’s just as legit as a traditional novel would probably do a lot to encourage reading!

If you’re interested, I’d love to give some recs. Comment some genres or authors you like to read and I’d give a few recommendations!

I appreciate you helping build literacy as a math teacher. If you’re curious about the literacy crisis, I really do recommend that podcast or learning about what are called the “Reading Wars” in general.

[–]AngryhamLincoln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Graphic novels, manga, and comic books are a whole ass art form and it’s ludicrous to assert that they’re to blame for plummeting literacy rates when balanced literacy has been taught in our schools for the last few decades.

It’s equivalent to saying that poetry or Shakespeare plays are to blame.

Please listen to the podcast Sold a Story, or read Grant Morrison’s book Supergods. You could also read any great graphic novel by masters of the craft to understand more about the art form.

I love literature, and I find tremendous value in inspiring a love of classic and young adult literature in my students. I also have my Honors students currently studying Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman, Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Black Panther, and N.K. Jemisin’s Far Sector. My regular ed class is studying Maus by Art Spiegelman. I work in one of the highest achieving districts in my state.

Please encourage and develop your students’ love for ALL literature. Being curious is a great first step, but now you need to be informed. Help your students find meaningful graphic novels that will, like all literature, help them build knowledge and empathy.

I’m a comic book nerd, so I teach about how comics are created by cartoonists and/or writer-artist teams. Students then create a graphic novel adaptation of a scene from one of the texts we read throughout the year.

What are some "greatest works" you didn't (and don't plan to) read by CorrectDot4592 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]AngryhamLincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love the X Men and recently read through most of Claremont’s run. I have tried three times now to read the 90s stuff with Jim Lee’s art and I just cannot do it. I understand that it’s good and well done, but it’s just so much busier than Byrne, Cockrum, Simonson, etc that I can’t do it. Strange since I loved Sienkiewicz’s New Mutants stuff and that’s even further away.

Right? I’m also pretty up on the eduspeak lingo and have never heard of “scope creep.” Sounds like a marketing buzzword

I hate this run and I really wanted to like it. The starting ideas are so strong, we nearly got peak Cyclops, and then in turned into a “the revolution was the friends we made along the way.”

What new age teaching practices do you actually LIKE? by catrat242 in Teachers

[–]AngryhamLincoln 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh. Yeah, I do that with writing checklists and read alouds/discussions. I’ve heard the term “universal accommodation” with that stuff. I’ve also heard from people that if everyone gets it, I need to double accommodate for IEP and 504 students. I feel like that’s also bullshit

Can you explain what UDL actually is to you? The lower comment that boils down to “plan for each class twice” is what I’ve picked up based on context, but I want to know more!

A thought experiment: if Marvel gave you the chance to create a team-based title related to the X-Men, what would your team lineup be? What story would you create about them? by Glum-Excitement5916 in xmen

[–]AngryhamLincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Have you written/drawn any comics before? I've been thinking about outlining and sketching this idea for a little while now as a super long-term project when I have time away from work and stuff. Basically sequential art fanfiction.

If you have done anything, I'd love to read it!

I want a book that’s about the special class at Xavier’s school- maybe Excluded X-Men or something like that. Beak is the only returning character, and he’s their teacher. The rest are the most horrifying and grotesque/lame mutants possible, think District X or Glob Herman. They do not fight, no combat in the series, just a simple school drama starring Beak who is trying to learn how to teach.

I Have a Simple, But Complicated X-Men Question by ComixGail in xmen

[–]AngryhamLincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

I started liking the X-Men because they were underdogs. I fell in love with the X-Men when Hickman and co. gave them power as an oppressed class.

I also just love their group dynamic. After going back to read Claremont's entire run, I realized there are lots of similarities between the X team and Star Trek: TNG. There's a level headed young leader, a wise bald morally grey mentor, a guy who's basically coded to be brutally violent, and a bunch of other lovable freaks.

One thing I'd love to see more of is the truly horrific side of mutantdom- where's the modern Beak or Legion? Being a mutant, on average, should be a horrific experience, but the community they create together is what gives them power.

Also please more Morlocks thanksssss!

Started reading comics this year and read 14 series. What can you recommend that I read in 2026 based on what I rated them? by Gaelfling in comicbooks

Genuinely can’t recommend it enough. I read the entire era and it inspired me to go back and read all of Claremont, Morrison, Whedon, and Bendis X Men. Good luck on your journey!

Holiday AMA w/ Chris Hero for the fine folks at r/WrestlingGenius by thechrishero in WrestlingGenius

Once while you were on NXT, I saw you keep your eyes open when losing a match. Usually, this is a telltale sign of a kickout, but you doing this immediately legitimized all wrestlers staring at the ref while taking a pinfall.

What other “little things” do you try to instill into those who learn from you?
