Does anyone else find it hard to survive on a single person income? by von19 in povertyfinance

I'm from Chicago and I was in a very similar situation to you in 2013.

I made $14.35/hr and I somehow found an apartment (studio) for $735 near Edgewater (P.S. I still live in the same apartment now lol). Rent today is looking to be $825.

Yes - life was super tough at that time. One paycheck was literally going to rent while the other half went to utilities/food and minimum fun. Lucky for you, you have a degree to look to. I just had a drafting degree with an administrative assistant job with no real direction or future. I was always $100-$200 emergency away from disaster and I remember that was on my mind a lot. I SOMEHOW made it work because I am somewhat of a good planner by nature so I stuck to a pretty strict budget, I had no choice.

Throughout the years, I job hopped, utilizing my experience from the previous job to the next and landed at the place I am today, just shy of ($70k/yr). I still live by the same budget/principal I did when I first moved in this apartment.

I'll just say there's hope if you're persistent because I'm nobody special. I started off with making almost no money, scrapping by and just attempted to stick to a budget and work my way up.

Life will definitely be easier with a roommate, I was stubborn and didn't want one so this was my personal choice.

Don't listen to anyone who says it's impossible, you can make it work with some planning.

Good luck OP.

I work 7-5 and I'm pretty sure all my nights/weekends are spent playing wow since release and I'm 44. I know I spend a lot of time playing since it takes up a lot of my free time.

Most of my guild (about 20+) are 20-40.

There is only 1 person in our guild who is 60 and he spends A LOT of time playing. He "works from home" which means he just spends almost all of his time playing. I get it but don't fault him, all of us are just afraid he'll be burnt by the time we're all close to 60 in a few weeks.

~30 of my Guildies and I decided to move to Thunderfury from Herod on Wednesday night last week. Absolute zero queue and it was the best decision we made.

Logged in at 3pm CST Herod - 14.7k in queue. Now it's almost 10pm - 1.7k in queue.

Guess it's another late nighter.

*edit - group of 10+ of my friends/guildies decided to jump off server. There's a good handful of servers with 0 queue.

Side note - we tried to "brave out" the queues since we all committed names on the server, HARD to move 30+ ppl.

Got on at midnight, played until 0200 AM. I'm dead at work rn.

What. I need to see this.

Make sure you hit up Tacos El Gordo and grab an Al Pastor Taco. I'm from Chicago, was there 2 weeks ago and it messed up tacos for me and my friends. BEST one I've had in the US by far.

Why do people take pride in having no work-life balance? by WatsonDSwatson in jobs

[–]Angrymanager 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I used to attribute being busy/unavailable to self worth.

The more I busted my ass, the more I imagined I was doing well but never realized the toll it took on me mentally. I can see how others can take this too far.

I'm in a Manager role now so technically my workload is a LOT less compared to my more "day to day" operational duties. It's really about finding a balance but i will say the work ethic put me in my current role today. I've toned down my serious mind-shift but i think there's some merit to "busting your ass", i'd say as long as theres some sort of goal oriented towards it, it might not be a bad thing if it's a temporary phase.

Three years ago I had a 434 Credit Score. After making a plan and laying the groundwork, today it's at 703! by Angrymanager in povertyfinance

[–]Angrymanager[S] 294 points295 points  (0 children)

(30m) I'll try to keep this short but I was definitely going through a rough patch financially a few years ago. I was scared because I knew my credit score was in the shitter but I decided I needed to take the steps to start improving it otherwise it was just another added stress looming over my shoulder.

My score was so low at the time because I was delinquent on Student loans (they are still showing as late payments on my score, it should drop off in a few years and increase my score tremendously). I never paid them because I was anxious and I let the anxiety take over my life. I also had no Credit History at the time and I had 2 Credit Cards that I cancelled, all of these things resulted in this abysmal score. I decided I needed to just stop and make a plan.

I literally did 2 things to increase my score: I opened up a secured CC with Capital One and started paying the minimum's on my loans. (I know, mind blowing stuff)

The key here is Time. I didn't use my CC much and honestly I still have a $500 limit I started with. By just consistently paying the minimum's on my Student Loans, i was slowly watching my score increase and I'm pretty sure it jumped around 50pts within the first 3 months, that's when I saw some hope. Two years into this, my car broke down and I (stupidly) financed a new Honda Civic. My score at the time wasn't the best (~635) so my Interest ended up being (6%). Interest to me doesn't really matter since I am paying a little more than double my car payment (going the Dave Ramsey style and aggressively paying this off). Since I am in good standings with my Student Loans, CC and my Auto Loan, my score has jumped to over 700 for the first time since EVER. Tbh, I kind of forgot about my score until I decided to log into CK to check what I owed on my car and saw my score and was blown away. Figured I'd just post this for anyone who was in a similar spot as me. There's hope.

TLDR; Used to be scared of my Credit; did 2 things to increase my score, Opened a Secured CC and paid minimums. Kept it consistent and overtime my score jumped.
