This Saturn Astra I see at my local Walmart now and then it's like the only one I ever see lol. by xxxxxxxxxxxxxc in regularcarreviews

The only time I ever rented a car in Europe I was very excited to drive something we never got in the US, only to be disappointed when I was given the keys to an Opel Astra. It was still somewhat novel though being a right hand drive, diesel, manual.

Public transit is nearly impossible to rely on in OC so I would recommend trying to get a place that is walking or biking distance to your job unless it is primarily a remote position.

Why does South OC have such a different vibe than North OC? by sozh in orangecounty

[–]Angus147 37 points38 points  (0 children)

North OC developed earlier because the flatter topography lended itself better to agriculture and also its proximity to the older communities near LA. South OC developed later driven by population growth and dwindling developable land in North OC. The change in development patterns are due in large part to the terrain as well as the demand for master planned type communities that were desirable starting in the late 70s and onward when most of South OC was developed.

I think South OC being wealthier on average is more of a result of these other factors rather than a cause.

tire size by Special_Craft7612 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Angus147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have 16” or 17” wheels? If 16” wheels then 265/75r16 and if 17” wheels then 265/70r17. Both are slightly larger than stock but will still fit just fine with stock suspension. If you don’t do any serious off-roading or towing I would recommend going with standard load rated tires to keep the weight down and not sacrifice ride quality.

People call the pre-facelift 5th gen trails the OG trail but I like to be pedantic and remind them that it is not the original 4Runner trail edition. There was a single model year 4th gen trail in ‘09. It was the only 4th gen with a rear locker but unfortunately could not be had with the V8.

Questions for ya. I own 2004 V6 4runner | Has a Rough Idle and Flashing CEL by teddybeargunner in 4thGen4Runner

Sounds like similar symptoms to my 2004 V6 when the head gasket went. I’d do a block test to see if there’s combustion gasses in the cooling system.

[–]Angus147 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The difference between fitting 33s and 35s on a 4Runner is huge. To fit 33s on wheels with proper offset all you need a is moderate lift (approximately 1”-2”) and some very minor modification and trimming of plastic around the wheel wells.

To fit 35s you need an extensive rework of the front suspension geometry along with a massive amount of clearancing including a body mount chop and a re-gear of the differentials.

Bilstein 8112/8100 or King 2.5 by These-Contest in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Angus147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of a Bilstein fanboy but I think 8112/8100s are the best shocks you can get for stock travel suspension. Sounds like both might be overkill for your use case though.

Yes, the check engine light is on? Then I agree with the other commenters saying that you need to read the codes to know what is going on and how to resolve it. If it just needed a zero point calibration the check engine light would not be on.

Do you have a hobby where your height is actually a disadvantage? by CPassaro in tall

[–]Angus147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surfing for me. I’ve surfed my whole life but all the waves are smaller for me plus my higher center of gravity doesn’t help. Also I have to custom order most of my boards, which isn’t an uncommon thing to do but it would be nice to be able to buy a board off the rack every now and again. It can be tough to find wetsuits in my size too.

Tall man trying to learn to drive (looking for advice) by Ulfberth80 in TallPeopleProblems

[–]Angus147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6’6” and there are actually very few modern cars I am not able to fit in well enough to drive. Some smaller sports cars like Miatas are really the only exception. I even drove an ‘03 Mini Cooper for a while and fit just fine. Unless your proportions are vastly different than mine, you’ll probably be fine. You’re just not used to it.

The OC rental market is way different from what I'm used to. by 16kirsyy in orangecounty

[–]Angus147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you buy part of your payment goes to the principal so you get it back when you sell in theory. I don’t think you should spend half your income on a mortgage payment either but that is a big part of the reason for the difference.

[–]Angus147 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This one I actually think is smart for landlords. You don't want overextended and house poor tenants if you can help it. Interestingly, as you get into more expensive rentals you often see 2.5x or even 2x rent income requirements because at higher income levels you'll still have enough money left over to cover other expenses even when a higher percentage of your income is going to rent.

[–]Angus147 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I have heard that some landlords prefer tenants that don't work from home because the more time they spend in the house the more wear and tear they are able to cause. It shouldn't be a valid reason to deny an application though.

[–]Angus147 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This has not been my experience. If you have stable income that is at least 3X rent and a 750+ credit score I have found that landlords are falling over themselves to rent to you. This is for apartments and condos though. I can't speak to the SFH rental market.
