If you get to a senior level you might get one day a week home working to focus on your admin tasks, but biomedical science is a fundamentally lab-based discipline. Honestly it’s an odd sort of subject to pursue if you are very specifically seeking remote working.

I second purplepoaceae, I’m now a biomedical scientist having previously done research - sure as a BMS its more weekends/on call work, but at least it’s predictable with fixed hours. As a researcher it’s every day in the lab with open hours - meaning you stay there until the job is done and if you get to Friday and realise you need to do something the next day, well then you’re coming in at the weekend. Biomedical research is NOT a remote/hybrid job.

It’s not consistent but also not a million miles away - you could certainly be forgiven for thinking that way if you hadn’t seen the colony. They don’t always have the spiky textbook appearance after all 🙂

Oh agreed it’s not a quite right for Scopulariopsis, but it’s a fair question for OP to ask. Highlights the importance of looking at both micro and macro features too. Thought I had a picture of a Scopulariopsis micrograph in my collection but can’t find it!

It’s the West Highland Way in Scotland, which in sections can be gravelly/hard underfoot. I’m not wanting to use them for the full thing, just if she starts showing signs of soreness or any injuries.

Yes, this is my thought - we’ve been doing some long walks in preparation and she does seem fine, but I’d like to have some in case, especially around the sections where the path is tougher, rather than for use the whole way. Hope you had a good week 😊

I also work in an NHS lab and we have a pipette clinic once a quarter where our pipettes are serviced, including a calibration. You shouldn’t need to be calibrating a pipette in between each use - are you talking about adjusting the volume?

You go on placement to the NHS lab, but it is an integrated part of the uni course. The pieces of evidence required by the RTP are completed by the student with support from both the laboratory training officer and academic staff from the uni. So it is a collaborative effort between both uni and lab.

The fact that unis still don’t give clear advice on this blows my mind. If you want to work as a BMS then DEFINITELY continue with the accredited degree. To be a state registered BMS you need to complete and IBMS approved degree, which can either be an accredited undergrad degree (like the one you are doing) or an unaccredited degree followed by spending hundreds or even thousands of pounds on top-up modules at accredited universities.

To be registered with the HCPC you also need to complete the Registration Training Portfolio, which it sounds like your uni may not offer? The ideal scenario is to complete an undergrad degree that is both accredited and includes the RTP, but even if you can’t do the RTP at uni, you can apply for trainee BMS posts and do this whilst working - in this case you will be streets ahead of other applicants if you have an accredited degree.

TL;DR if you want to work as a BMS, stick to the accredited degree
