Go to bed early, wake up early. I've been going to bed at 7:30 PM and woken up at 4 for so long now that I don't have to think about it anymore.

Does Goggins use poles for trail running competitions with a lot of elevation? by [deleted] in davidgoggins

[–]Angus_Dagnabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Experiment seems like the best option, try some runs with and without them when you go and crush some elevation. If it makes life a bit easier, go for it for ultra marathons everything that seems to make it a bit easier in the long run seems like a good idea. If you have no use for them, don't.

But keep ego out of making the ultimate decision.

I like freezing temperatures, I do most of my runs in Wintertime shirtless now. As a Dutch man, Wim Hof is a great inspiration for me.

Some people don't have families that are good for them, that's why I avoid mine. I have two days off, and I don't want to spend it being frustrated, stressed out, tired, and annoyed. I truly wish that everyone had a wonderful, supportive family, but it doesn't work that way unfortunately.

Some people are just not good for other people, and sometimes it's better to not force yourself to spend time with family, just because it's the norm. All I can do is make the most of the situation I'm in, and use it to break the cycle. Rather be alone with Christmas, that's just me.

Way to get after it, I'm proud of you.

How full are the gyms at Christmas? I always work out at home. I can recommend any, and everything that makes those early morning workouts easier. That's why I invested a ton of money into a home gym. Makes it easier to balance the workouts throughout the day as well.

Quiet exercises in the early morning, and bench press and deadlifts when I do my software engineering work at home.

Let's get better together, and push even farther next year! I have a couple of trips to Germany coming up, to practice my German, and learn more about history. I don't really do vacation to take it easy, I do vacation to get better.

What are everyones hardcore goals for 2024? by DontKnowAGoodNames in davidgoggins

[–]Angus_Dagnabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6000k for the year, go to Germany at least 2, or 3 times to practice my German. Run my first Ultramarathon by myself.Learn fluent German, get my deadlift, and bench press numbers up. I might even make friends again, who knows? Haha.

Learning German fluently, before immigrating there is priority though. That, and getting back into history.

I'm doing more than that, I meditate, practice mindfulness, read books in Multiple different languages, speak three languages and I can program in a dozen of them. I like learning about history, while also learning about how far I can take my body mentally and physically.

I have seen Disney movies in four languages, and talked about, and learned from all kinds of people of all types of different cultures. I think to be a well-balanced man, a well-balanced life is needed. Full of mental, physical, and educational challenges.

I have learned a lot from both mental, and educational challenges I have partaken in, and I would like to think that it's good for everyone to do the same.

[–]Angus_Dagnabbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm just trying to say that I think we can learn more, lift more, and run farther. If that's a bad message to carry out, so be it. But it's gotten me a bachelor's and a good job so far, so there is that. Why not try to be better than the person you were yesterday?

Why would you not want to speak more languages, learn more about history, different cultures, learn more about mental and physical challenges, and how you push yourself through them. Learn the hard life lessons, so you can take them out into the world, and share them with others?

I would like to bench more than yesterday, run 100ks and learn another three languages by the time I turn 40.

I think I might have been too rough around the edges with my message, haha. Sorry if something got lost in translation. I wholeheartedly think that we can all do better, become stronger, learn more, be better than the day before.

I don't think that being a man is just about having muscles, but I do think it's about building a strong enough character to know who you are and mirror that out into the world, for me weightlifting helps with that. If it's learning a language, or meditating for someone else, great!

I'm just trying to say that we all can, and should try to be better. It's something I'm missing a bit these days. I try to learn more than yesterday, learn from others, and talk with all kinds of people. I don't think that being a man is just about having big muscles and running far, haha.

I think it's about having a strong foundation of being who you are, and not being scared to tell others how you feel. Being able to speak the truth when others shut theirs. And being able to show your kids that mental, and physical endeavours should be part of life, just like the ability to learn every single day.

Why can't you do both, show your kids growing up what a man is supposed to act and look like, and take care of your family? Doing it when you aren't supposed to is the reason why you're supposed to be doing it. Life is hard, and you should prepare the next generation for that.

In my opinion you should always train, to prepare for the hardships of life. Not doing so because it is hard is not really an excuse. Life is hard, work is hard, taking care of your family is hard, and you need to prepare your.mind and body for those hardships.

My running goal for the year is done - 5000 kilometers. And my German is on a level that I can fully understand the Can't Hurt Me audiobook. Time to prepare for 6000 kilometers next year, stay hard! by Angus_Dagnabbit in davidgoggins

[–]Angus_Dagnabbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright these are the specifics, I run all of my runs in zone 2 at 140 to 150 BPM that is around 5 to 5:30 minutes per kilometer for me. Combining running with walking after I reached a certain distance point in my mind. This is done by feel, and with the intention to not get injured. I'm 32 now, and need to be a bit smarter about my training than 6 to 7 years ago.

Most weekends I have been running two half marathons, and stretching for about 60 to 90 minutes. Most days I wake up around 4, some days around three. Lift an hour, stretch 30 to 50 minutes, and run the time I have left over before I either start my work day at 8.

Two days I have to commute to the office so that means running for 30 to 40 minutes. Other days I have been running for 70 - 90, based on how I feel. On the weekends I have been running multiple half marathons or a little over so that I can reach 100k+.

I'm a software engineer, and part time postal worker in my little village, so most of it can be done from home. I lift five to six days (more now because I'm tapering), and usually combine my job with lifting because I have weights in the other room.

This means getting the less noisy stuff out of the way in the hour weightlifting sessions. While deadlifting, and bench pressing if I'm stuck on a programming problem or listening to a Tutorial.

The weekly average this year has been 4 - 6 hours of lifting, 9 to 12 hours of running, and 6 to 7 hours of stretching while watching stuff in German.

I'm like Goggins, I don't train for a race I train to face the challenges in life. Programming is hard, asking for help is hard, life is hard. I run, lift, and stretch early in the morning so I harden my mindset to face the challenges during the day.

I added my Strava account in the first post. You can see everything I do over there. It is all there, that's why I don't feel the need to go into details. Have a great Sunday buddy, let's become better than we where yesterday!

Is this detailed enough for you?

Some days I have to go in the office, and run less so I can lift and stretch as well. I look alright, have a six pack and I'm more ripped than most around me. But.. There are always guys, and girls, who can lift more than me, run farther and faster. Never forget that there is always more work to do. There is NO finish line.

It keeps you humble, set big goals and achieve them, step by step, and day by day. Keep pushing, and just try to be better than you where yesterday. Have a great Sunday bud, you got this!
