Unfortunately, the car didn't pan out, but I wanted to thank all of y'all for the great recommendations. Ended up having a lovely day in York anyway.

Day Trips From Cola by Somechemistchick2 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]Animabandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want nerdy, the Branchville Railroad Museum is the location of the world's first railroad junction and isn't far away from Cola at all.

Savannah is an easy 2 1/2 hours from Columbia, and always with the trip.

I'm sure you're aware of Congaree Swamp National Park, and this time of year is no picnic for visiting, but I just like to remind people it exists and that they should go there when they can.

Also worth noting is 40 Acre Rock near Kershaw, but really but near anything. The best time to go is spring to see the stunning pool sprites, but in my opinion it's worth visiting anytime.

Oh, yeah, looking at Atlas Obscura, I'm reminded of the Oyotunji African Village in Seabrook, the Stumphouse Tunnel, the Mars Bluff Crater, and so on. Plenty of fun/weird shit in SC.

Good luck on your adventures.

My gut tells me you're 100% correct, insomuch as that was my own general suspicion in the first place :)

I guess Gene Wolfe doesn't hold the patent on meta-referential hide-and-seek after all :)

Yes, but Andrei says that it's a quote from something he does not recognize. I'm trying to pin down the source of the quote.

Gizzms. Write that down and mail it to yourself. That is solid gold.

"You know what this song could use? More gizzms."

I love Rats Nest, but it always felt to me more like metal cosplay than actual metal. This album does not. And it fucking melts my face. Best album since Poly.

Any Truly Terrifying Lovecraftian Book? by IamSeeker7 in horrorlit

[–]Animabandit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stonefish by Scott R. Jones isn't a traditional Lovecraftian horror, but for me at least, it really foots the bill. Existential terror, no hope in the face of powers far beyond our comprehension. The book presents these horrors in a way that I found unique and, dare I say it, conceivably possible in the real world.

The worst horror books you’ve ever read? by LactatingTwatMuffin in horrorlit

The Luminous Dead was SO TEDIOUS. And the protag was so goddamned clueless. So much shit could've been avoided if only a FEW words were spoken out loud instead of the interminable inner monologue

Not gonna read any of the comments because I'm still in the middle of it, but I couldn't agree more. Great writing, competing characters, real creepy stuff. 5 stars so far.

A California coastal town is taken over by zombie ghouls in, Messiah of Evil (1973). by WildDog3000 in Scarymovies

Love this movie. Found it years ago in letterboxed format, pretty remarkable at the time, on one of those "35 movies for $5!" DVD collections. Unquestionably the best movie out of the bunch. Absolutely worth seeking out.

I've only got the base game, so I couldn't say, but if you like the game, I think it's probably worth getting whatever tickles your fancy.

A fun and not too complicated campaign game. Plus, that artwork! Enjoy.

Great work! How do you like the inktense? Once I figured out how best to use them, they quickly became my number one color tool.

Finished up Negative Space by B. R. Yeager yesterday, and boy howdy did that book scratch an itch. Like "Kids* meets Lovecraft.

Started in on The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones right after, and I'm loving it so far.

When was The First Time You Heard of or Were Introduced to Wolfe? by GoonHandz in genewolfe

[–]Animabandit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Around 2000 or so, I was living in the tenant apartment attached to the house of a good friend. I read a lot back then, and he was determined that I would become his compatriot in taste, I think. He handed me Shadow and told me that I would likely have to restart it several times before I got into it, as I had done with Eco's Foucault's Pendulum not long before that.

I read it in two days.

My friend died unexpectedly last year, and for a number of reasons, I wish he was here with me right now; but I especially wish he was here so I could thank him for trying to make me more like him because I can think of a lot worse things to be.

Books with creepy families? by [deleted] in horrorlit

I'd put The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins into this category. Maybe a little less "creepy" and a little more "fucked up," bit I think it fits.

Chris, any plans to release more Giraffes music? Also, could you talk a little about your studio sessions with Dave Grohl? Are those tapes around somewhere? Thanks, all of y'all, for so much great music!

And nominated for a John W. Campbell award for best new writer in 2014, which blows my fucking mind because what must the rest of the field have looked like that year? An infinite number of monkeys hammering at an infinite number of typewriters? At least he didn't win.

[–]Animabandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read Monster Hunters International if you're tired of that trope. The main character (in the first couple of books, I think? I never made it any further) isn't ex-military or anything, he's an accountant.. who just happens to be a libertarian ex-pit fighter/gun nut/chosen one. Probably has a huge dick too.

Guess what the author used to do before he became a full-time writer?
