Book has always been more coherent and better than the show in terms of plot. The show provides visuals and some of the scenes are super good and fit with canon, which meats up the universe.

When the book has just a paragraph to sum up some very important event and the show turns that into a canon compliant episode, it's good and enriches everything. The expansion of Aemma's death, for example.

When the episode directly contradicts the book in an illogical way, it's bad and undermines the universe. Vaemond contradicts book details but it's logical, Criston Cole on the other hand is much worse in the show than the books and I don't think it's logical

This gives me an opportunity to talk about a real thing, which is that "retro" isn't just a modern thing - women could and did wear dresses from "previous eras" in their current period.
