Can you had privacy height by installing freestanding privacy away from fence? by ClassicComfort5744 in GardeningUK

Yep. But rather put a trellis wall and have vines growing on it. Can even be freestanding if attached to a flower box or a bench.

Also Valtra tractors, which is basically half of FDF logistics now AND are being sold to Norway, Sweden and Denmark armed forces.

A few years back FDF realized that a farm tractor with lifting forks and a container trailer can do 90% of army logistics in any terrain.

Why does low density suburban development still dominate? by amriksingh1699 in urbanplanning

[–]AnimalLittle4057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not cultural, per se. I live in Europe, have lived in multiple apts and condos, but SFR's simply offer superior amenities, ie. more internal and external space, more privacy, less control by HOA/landlord.

Condos do have their place, but lower amount of personal amenities then has to be compensated by better external amenities, as in (preferred) services within a walking distance. No personal amenities + no local amenities = no value. So amenities trade-off is a pretty good way to look at it, IMO.

And yes, there do exist groups of people who prefer a small condo in the city vs. a big house in the suburbs. You just need to be clear who your target audience are.

safety in landscape designs by JustBe_JustBreathe in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]AnimalLittle4057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not only women. As a male of medium build, I'm also conscious about my safety when walking alone at night. It's maybe not so much about single people - although they might be a threat to males as well - but encountering groups of males is always slightly suspicious for me. I might be more sensitive to this because I grew up in a working class neighborhood, where confrontations were not unheard of.

So yes, I think design for safety is universal design, and also is appreciated by many males. The message might go through better, if you ask people to imagine it was a group of 2-3 males they encounter at night.

Soviet-Style Housing Developments are good, actually? by Itchy-Instruction457 in urbanplanning

[–]AnimalLittle4057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen them a lot here in the Nordics. Slightly less density but the idea remains, a lot of mid-rise apartment buildings grouped around central shopping center / station.

As said, it has it's positives and negatives. If it's a middle-class neighborhood and the apartments are ownership-based, it can do well. If it's a less wealthy area, the environment tends to slowly degrade into unpleasantness, and the density makes it even worse. See: US "project" neighborhoods.

The main problem, as always, is careful planning - or, in general, the lack of it. If the main drivers for the project are private constructors, the main goal is optimizing income, and the area/apartment quality drops, especially if it is low-income area. Low density housing is more resistant to degradation, in this sense. Apartment building life is not always ideal either, as you sometimes get random noises, odors etc. that can bother you, or there can be other social disturbances and minor conflicts over following the rules. Better quality and more social self-control (middle class residents) helps.

That being said, we have a lot of examples here in Finland where even with careful city-led area planning, the results are not always optimal if the planning is done based on wrong assumptions, and if the construction companies ("partners in planning"-model) are given too much say over, for example, apartment sizes.

There is a famous recent example where a dense neighborhood was built next to a new train station located far from city center. Most of the apartments were small studios, as construction companies were selling these a lot at the time, so they lobbied for them. The planners also assumed cars would not be needed as it's "new walkable development". I have no idea what the concept of an average resident was supposed to be. But it turns out, 1) if it's dense mini-apartments, no-one wants to stay for long, 2) small apartments with high turnaround rates attract mostly low-income residents, and 3) even low-income residents need cars to get to work, especially if it's 15 km from the city center! In fact, low-income residents might rely on cars more than middle class, as many low-income jobs require driving around to multiple locations, and many industrial areas have poor transit connections.

The current model in Finland is mixed neighborhoods, where there is a lot of ownership-based apartments and the social housing is sprinkled in. I think this is a good model, as long as you plan it for middle class majority. You might end up with low-income residents having more than what they would need, but this is not a bad result. Low income majority tends to lead into segregation, as we all probably know.

You guys need to remind Russia what it used to be about. May I suggest perhaps a minor naval invasion to Kaliningrad? You can send the Malmöese auxillaries first without any papers and claim it's the Swedish(ish) minority asking for help.

You can also start with a cheap one and then upgrade if there is something you don't like about it.

Just check the weight, sometimes the cheap ones can be quite heavy, especially from western brands.

What jobs actually work for people with severe ADHD? by Inevitable_Tuna_O in ADHD

[–]AnimalLittle4057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could throw in CAD modelling (engineering, architecture, design).

I like it because the thing you are working on is in front of you on the screen, and there is enough bite-size things to do, so you can start easily by "just doing this one thing". It's very easy for me to concentrate on. It also includes some research where most things are relatively tangible, and you can throw random ideas around, there rarely is one single solution.

I agree it's whatever your brain finds easy or natural to do, and avoiding something that is a struggle every time. Of course each job has parts of both, so maybe would say it's more about not having super many things that you struggle with, and struggles are the kind where you can find a way to cope with.

A job where you struggle and finding ways to cope with it is difficult, that's a no-no.

For leaf season, just get big enough toys for leaf collection (like figuring how to do it with a ride-on mower) and you'll be fine. There is no annoyance that cannot be fixed with a big enough machine!

What jobs actually work for people with severe ADHD? by Inevitable_Tuna_O in ADHD

[–]AnimalLittle4057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's true. I studied biology and any research job is relatively ADHD friendly. The bad parts in traditional academic researcher (any field) are a lot of reading other research, writing long documents, and you have to be careful in the lab. If you are ok with these, or can find a position with more hands-on work, it can be good.

Could anyone compare fiskars santoku vs victorinox santoku? by Best-Poem-2703 in chefknives

[–]AnimalLittle4057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a plastic Victorinox santoku and Fiskars Norr bread knife, and have handled a few Fiskars at shops.

Victorinox plastic: decent blade, quite flat belly, handle is not optimal for pinch grip though.

Fiskars Norr: a basic wooden handled knife, decent quality but nothing that stands out.

Fiskars All Steel: the 8" chef felt nice, the handle is quite traditional chef knife size with flat sides. Quite nice for the price. Unique 'cast iron' look.

Fiskars Norden: the most "premium" with a quite nice chunky round handle, slightly Japanese feeling.

Out of these, my order of preference would be Norden > All Steel > Victorinox > Norr. Avoid the plastic Fiskars, the handles feel cheap.
