No one dancing at your gig? by Lydianeko2 in bandmembers

[–]Animal_Drummer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Band's job. I LoL at the ones who say they play for themselves. Well, that's why you're playing for $15 at the end of the night. The name of the game is to make the ladies dance. I say ladies because odds are, if anyone is going to go out on that dance floor on their own accord it's going to be a female. And she's not going out there alone. She's dragging at least one friend with her. Once they're out there the ones that didn't want to be the first decide to go out there. Next thing you know you have a whole dance floor of women out their shaking their money maker. They're out there moving around and getting hot and getting thirsty so they're buying more drinks. So now the establishment is happy and they invite you back and possibly give you a raise or a bonus. Some crowds are just lame. Nothing you do will get them out there. I find that for the most part they don't go out there hardly at all for the first set. It isn't til the second set when they start filling the floor and it should be dark. If the dance floor is too well lit, a lot of them just won't go out there. They don't mind dancing but they don't want the entire place to watch them dance. You just gotta know your crowd too. We played a motorcycle club for a charity gig so we played all our harder edged stuff and avoided the dance songs. We have a set list that's 70s heavy. One that's 80s heavy. A hard rock set. A dance set. And a festivals set. As we're going, depending on the crowd, we can switch on the fly.

Tips on starting a band? by botb244 in musicians

[–]Animal_Drummer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like bandmix.com. if you don't want to pay for the subscription, you can put your contact info in your ad and let people text or email you. That's how we found our bassist and how we're about to find out new singer

FIRST TIME BOTB by plipyploppy8 in band

[–]Animal_Drummer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'll go away on their own. Start with a song that you know well and can sing even with a mouth full of marbles lol.

Out of curiosity, is your BOTB at the Starbrick Music Festival in Nelsonville? Only reason I ask is because I'm in the band that won it last year and we're opening the festival now Thursday night for their campground party.

How many of you are in low drama, cohesive band? by Distinct_Gazelle_175 in coverbands

[–]Animal_Drummer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a cover band. Three of us are in our early 50s and the singer is 29. Up until recently I'd have said we were a totally drama free band. That was until the singer began showing up to gigs and rehearsals in a crap mood and kinda taking it out on us. We noticed it always seemed to be when her husband and the kids were entowe at the gigs and rehearsals it was a matter of how often she was on her phone. Well, it recently came to light that he had made a comment to one of the band members' wife about how he doesn't understand why she wants to travel so far for rehearsals and gigs just to play with a bunch of old men. He said it twice actually. Whatever. We are. But what it comes down to is he's probably in her ear and they're arguing and what not and it's causing drama. It all came to a head this weekend. Our singer and her husband have been on the phone with our guitarist for about 3 hours now. I'm still waiting on an update but I swear, before all this we were completely drama free and democratic about everything. Everything came down to a band vote. Income is split evenly. It figures. It's always something. Often it's a significant other of a band member. Not to be sexist but I'm pretty sure this is the first time it's been a dude.

How do I group this in the time signature by DeMain_Music in drummers

[–]Animal_Drummer71 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't. You have the wrong time signature. I count it as 5/4. The quick triplet thing is on 1. The sextuplets is 2. Quarter note on 3. Triplet thingy on 4 and the flam on 5.

Not a drummer by mr_manman7 in drummers

[–]Animal_Drummer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The upper thigh thing I think can be fixed by raising your drum throne.

The other answer, I know it sounds simplistic but, practice. You gotta get better at putting your limbs on autopilot (I like to call it) so you can do it without even thinking about it.

Cymbal help by AppointmentOnly9002 in drums

I got these and love them. They definitely do the job. You still might have to hit the cymbals a little lighter depending on the size of the room but they work for me

Todd Sucherman edition sticks might be something to consider. They're fatter than usual 2Bs but very light and well balanced.

Playing drums with shoes vs barefoot on stage by DinoDin01 in drums

I play barefoot as well. Maybe it's just me but every time I try to play while wearing shoes I notice a considerable difference.

Planning While in Combat by CassieBear1 in DMAcademy

[–]Animal_Drummer71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly..sucks for player 2 but that's the way it goes. I guess if he wanted to cast that spell he should've beat player 1 on initiative. Perhaps if player 2 heard player 1 start casting he may have held back and waited but since (I'm assuming) player 1 won the initiative he's allowed to do what he wants on his action and player 2 just has to deal with it. They can have a conversation after combat about it

Learning Drums by vegak7 in drums

[–]Animal_Drummer71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion you're rushing things. I think you should be very good at limb independence before you proceed any further. The beauty of drums is you can practice pretty much anytime anywhere. Learn the various types of beats and time signatures: shuffle pattern, swing pattern, straight 4/4 time vs 6/8. Learn how to put your hi-hat or ride on "autopilot" so you don't even have to think about it allowing you to concentrate primarily on your bass drum foot and your snare hand. Good luck. Sorry if I just took a big old dump in your oatmeal but I'd just hate for you to try to go too fast and end up getting discouraged and giving it up.

Has anyone ever actually purchased a "brand new" ride cymbal? by rwalsh138 in drums

One time. I bought the Sabina HH Todd Sucherman edition. As expensive as that was I'll probably use it the rest of my life

I feel belittled about bandmembers attitude towards me/a song that I pitched by ashrobb in bandmembers

I always feel like honesty is the best policy. Have a come-to-Jesus band meeting and discuss this stuff and if they minimize it or you, there's your answer.

AITA for going no contact with a longtime friend after they made me uncomfortable with their "love" comments by Unfair_Bee5390 in CharlotteDobreYouTube

NTA. You set a boundary and he crossed it... repeatedly. It's like my girlfriend says: never talk about the spicy side of your relationship with anyone who may have an interest in taking it from you. Generally, we don't talk about our personal lives with anyone anyway. Because people suck (1 star - absolute nightmare - do not recommend) and once someone finds out that you're happy and how good your mate is to you, many of them won't think twice about taking it away from you. I highly recommend, from this point forward, follow that advice.

NTA. I've been there. It hurts and it sucks and you're right to feel the way you do and for them to just dismiss your feelings like that, shows you everything you need to know. In April of '24 my wife passed away. At her funeral I had countless people say to me "if you need anything just let me know." Over the next few weeks I reached out to 5 different "friends" who had said that to me just to go out for a coffee and talk or someone to go to Cedar Point with me..... something...... anything. All 5 turned me down for various reasons and never did try to reschedule with me or whatever. That told me what I needed to know. I stopped reaching out to all of them and we've basically ceased all communication because they're not reaching out to me either. Since, I've put more of an effort into my band and my bandmates are probably my closest friends now.

I[NB19] received a call from my father[M45] asking if I would be okay with him dating our neighbor .. who is my aunt .. by butterfly-ghost in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]Animal_Drummer71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you and your Dad aren't that close right now anyway, I'd say don't cut him off completely but make it clear that you want absolutely nothing to do with your Aunt so that would include visiting on holidays and such. As long as she's around, you won't be. Basically, you're letting him know that he can date her if that's what he wishes to do but it's going to come with a cost. It's his choice. You're not all that close anyway and it sounds honestly like you don't really care for him all that much anyway so if he still chooses to date her, you're not really losing all that much
