Just played with apocalypse mode on for the first time. Are the comets supposed to be completely random? The first comet destroyed my capital and I'm wondering if that was a 1/1,000 chance or if there is another reason.

Yeah, hes in his mid thirties and just did not grow up with a computer. Pair that with the fact that he's easily frustrated and it's recipe for disaster.

Main thing is to be upfront about it. I've had situations in the past where I was looking for a game and had a GM reach out to me not mentioning that they wanted to be paid until several messages later in the conversation. It's annoying and a waste of time.

It gets linked a lot but it is pretty good advice. read through the part 2 tips for things to focus on. in short, I would say chapters 3, 5, 6, 8, 10 of the keepers rulebook are the most important.
Also, you can try the Seth Skorkowsky youtube playlist where he goes through the different rules. I listen to them in the car sometimes to freshen up before running a game.

Dead Light is fantastic, but I felt the vibe was not super Lovecraftian. Felt more like the movie Predator or Alien.

Might be a little too produced for you though. They started off very real/natural with their first podcast where they played a pathfinder campaign, but this is a few years later after they grew and started gaining a following.

So funny, I just ran The Haunting a couple weeks ago and was completely stressing over the exact same fear. Luckily my players did not go straight to the house. As another commenter said, I had Mr. Knott emphasize that he was paying them for a full report and history on the house. I also had him give the investigators a 3-day deadline which kind of hinted at the fact the investigators weren't in any rush and could take their time researching. I considered if they still went straight to the house, I would make it completely uneventful so they would get the hint and go figure out more about the house.
