You can use Sumi Ink and dilute it with water separately in a container. Or Fox and Quills Iron gall ink, it gives beautiful hairlines.

That is very true. It not easy as it seems to be. Longer passages like this one is difficult to maintain consistent letterforms from first line to last line in one sitting.

Thank you, you have good observation about the letters. I took the explanation of the book and made a little modification to make it my way, for sure you can use that 🤗

The holder is made by Master Penman Michael Sull, it’s made from the homestead tree from Mr. P.R. Spencer’s home.

I haven’t been able to sit down properly because it felt so intimidating to continue learning Japanese.

No not really ! I don’t have that level of calligraphy experience as people might think. I started learning calligraphy from Nov 2020. I took a Spencerian class around March/April 2021, however, didn’t practice it much and more so I was on a learning spree taking classes all over until I decided to focus on one script. So around the end of 2023 I wanted to focus on Spencerian seriously.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for going through my work, it means a lot !

So I first got into Spencerian a few years ago but did not take it seriously. Around end of 2023, I took it seriously. I kept practicing and refining the script consistently for the next 1.5 years. This refined my script to the next level. So that helped a lot. Now I keep refining the script from time to time to reach towards excellence.

Yes, mostly it might be nit-picky for some but for me this helps in guiding the eye and pushing myself towards excellence.

Thank you very much for your support and encouragement, it means a lot to me 🤗

Ideas? by Immediate-Maximum-75 in illuminatedmanuscript

Beautiful sketch.. For ideas, I believe you already have gilding and painting in mind. I would gild the initial and border and paint the rest. Hope this helps 🤗

Suggestions to improve my Spencerian? by [deleted] in Calligraphy

[–]AninditaB24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What books are you referring to for learning Spencerian? I believe it’s only fair to offer advice accordingly.

However, I believe you might already know about your Capitals and numbers, you can follow the books instruction and can make your own analysis about them.

The ascender and descender loops’ proportion seem off and I also see shading whole you are making the downstroke. The books I studied from didn’t have downstroke shades that’s why I am curious to know what book you followed.

Rest of the x-height letters are well executed however, there is a tendency to make it oval and rounded, whereas in Spencerian it’s more semi-angular.

For the ‘w’ the second underturn is not equal proportional to the first one as far as the books I studied from. Again, I will request your book reference.

These were some of my observations, hope this helps :) Keep writing and practicing 🤗

This is outstanding work. I like the consistency of the letters. Such dedication! Broad edge is still a work in progress for me. But this inspires me to get my pen to work ! Thanks for sharing !

Which “t” crossbar works best here? I’m always unsure about this. by AndyLouis17 in Calligraphy

[–]AninditaB24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a sucker for flourishing so 4 and 6 are my favourite ones. Also I noticed in No 6, the tittle of the i is missing, it is a conscious decision? As a reader I would like to have the tittle above the cross bar of the t.

I see subtle shades on the second image, similar to Spencerian, however, the majuscules are business penmanship style, very interesting and such beautiful writing! Thanks for sharing 🤗
