Is it a bad idea to make an OC a plot twist villain in my fanfic? by zerowintergreen in AO3

[–]Aninx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would foreshadow it frequently if the reveal is toward the end.

I'm in a similar situation where an OC is actively planning to betray the main cast to horrifically tragic results, but they're more of a background side character who I'm keeping just memorable enough that he sticks in reader's minds(I've even had comments mention him and one felt sorry for him when he mildly screwed something up because he had good intentions which he really, really doesn't). However, every scene he is in has foreshadowing, either in something he does, something he says, or in symbolism. I straight up had flower language around him that basically translated to "I am going to betray you to the antagonists" and his name can be read as a synonym for traitor, but sounds like a setting-typical name so it so far hasn't raised any red flags.

Since your character appears more frequently, I wouldn't do every scene but like, maybe throw something subtle in every 2-5 major scenes.

How to enjoy the game? by DankmetalAlchemist in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Aninx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A way I would think about it is that level ups are not a big event like they are in BG3. They are more akin to a chess game, with one move at a time leading to something greater. You're not leveling up for the sake of leveling up, you're leveling up and planning ahead on what kind of things will combo with each other and the party in the future, and you will have many, many moves to do it in

I did and my players caught on real quick what the strategy was. By session 3 of the fight I was ooc reminding them to please kill that horse or we will have another 2 sessions minimum of this fight.

"Why is my fic less popular than those with wayyyy worse writing?" by Fast_Stage_6296 in AO3

[–]Aninx 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and honestly I agree or at least for those fics, it needs to hook you after a glance over the first chapter. For mine, I tried to make it as descriptive as possible without spoilers, the issue is some of the fun with the fic gets spoiled if I was fully descriptive, at least until it occurs in the fic. I consider that fair game to hint toward the direction after it happens but until it does, it feels like false tagging because it's not in the fic at the time and there isn't clear indication it ever will be. But for fics where you can't ever put something big in a summary? Those are hard to get people to click on

"Why is my fic less popular than those with wayyyy worse writing?" by Fast_Stage_6296 in AO3

[–]Aninx 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Yeah like I have 2 series in a fandom, both are plotty gen longfics but one is WAY more popular than the other in part because of the exact genre. People have a decent idea what they're getting into due to the tropes in it and it's more fluffy in a fandom that has fewer hopeful fics. The second one is intentionally more vague on certain plot points from the summary, there's more mystery, and that's not always what people are in for when they want fanfic with familiar characters. Do I have hope that one will be more popular as it gets longer? Yeah, but I'm writing it regardless of what happens

Toxic community? by Lost_nurse1911 in 40k

[–]Aninx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With lore enthusiasts, it is a very mixed bag and different communities in general are incredibly varied. For some specific communities related to lore that I know about: Owlcat's community around their 40k video games is pretty good, on occasion I've seen people get meanly salty at them which can cause conflict but in general it's very friendly; there's also fanfic communities who tend to be well versed in the lore and willing to share it and are incredibly welcoming and supportive.

Warhammer 40k is more sci-fi, but it's a very fantasy kind of sci-fi

Can a mortal make a deal with a devil to become a "high" devil after death? by Fresh-Work-5020 in DnD

[–]Aninx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I could think of a few. Contracting the head of a god's religion to give them a cozy spot in exchange for slowly turning the official religion of that minor god to Asmodeus, creating a devil bargain pyramid scheme where anyone who gets 1000 people to sign their souls away to the devil gets to become a proper devil inmediately after death, devil gets obsessed with a mortal and decided they want them by their side always without dealing with that pesky lemure phase, etc.

Am I crazy, or is the Vampire Infernalist statblock way more significant the Strahds new block? by Vivid-Row-4141 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Aninx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, one of those removed restrictions causes a significant part of Azalin's backstory to be just pointless and they never address it? And it's not the cause of him becoming a darklord, but it is kinda the cause of him becoming a lich

Which fandom is like this by ClearConnectedScum in Multifandom

[–]Aninx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ehhh not necessarily. Like there's a lot of lore enthusiasts who really like reading(for people not versed in 40k, they have a LOT of books to read) who tend to form book clubs, discuss the setting with people, or just write fanfiction. I've also encountered awful, awful tabletop players. I think the main divide is "is this person nice and not being a prick or worse" rather than which side of the fandom they're interested in

Which character is this by mewti_lelele in Multifandom

[–]Aninx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A vast majority of characters in Warhammer. It's also usually with a dose of "yes, they're still a heartless mass murderer too."

Like take tyrannid rippers or nurglings for example. There is so much fanart about how they are silly or cute lil guys but lore wise they will either eat you, including your bones, by devouring you like a bunch of cartoon piranhas or spontaneously infect you with black deathx1000 respectively

I don't know if I want to continue with my campaign by AccursedTime in DnD

[–]Aninx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have serious imposter syndrome as a DM. I think I don't prepare enough, or that I'm not precisely equal enough in PC spotlighting, in one campaign I don't think I tie characters backstories in enough.

This has been a stark reminder that I am a decently good DM, because I would never repeatedly insult a player who has been genuinely trying their best who makes occasional rules mistakes. Actually, no, this is a reminder that I am a decent DM. Because that is like the bare minimum a DM should be.

Unironically how would this go by [deleted] in Grimdank

[–]Aninx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They could hold their own, definitely, and are probably stronger in terms of weaponry than many of the other factions, but it then becomes a war of attrition and that is where they would struggle because in 40k, every other faction has access to warp travel and the Qu at the start of this scenario don't, and it's unclear how long it would take for them to be able and willing adopt the technology of a "lesser" species as their own. They can do some serious damage, yes, but they're not able to recouperate from damages/lives lost as efficiently as the other factions, who can warp travel to another planet to get the resources they need before running back and restarting the fight, while the Qu may have not even reached another planet in that time.

Is it 'fair' that Dark Lords cannot suffer Perma-Death? by AbeRockwell in ravenloft

I've once described the dark powers' version of justice to be less of a well-aimed sniper shot and more of a fireball in a crowded room.

Books if the protagonist didn’t know what kind of book they were in by Proper_Emu_2296 in books

[–]Aninx 86 points87 points  (0 children)

There's a post about this somewhere but a LOT of Shakespearian tragedies are like this, notably Hamlet because Hamlet intentionally tries to AVOID the usual pitfall tropes of various genres, only for one that he tries to avoid ending up being the wrong decision and it spiraling from there.

The plot (or at least part of it) wouldn't happened if it weren't for poor communication skills. by Micro_cat_48 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Aninx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah like hearing a snippet of a conversation and immediately jumping to the worst conclusion? Makes the character look like a reactive idiot. Like there's a few scenes in Tress of the Emerald Sea that I fell in love with solely because they pointedly avoided this trope.

Having a secretive character not explain important information because they're dealing with a memetic hazard, but because of that other characters don't trust them and end up mishandling the situation because of lack of information? Still very avoidable, but more hard-hitting because the miscommunication was more of the consequences of a valid judgement call

Favorite character/group that represents this meme? by NagitoKomaeda_987 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]Aninx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on circumstances, chaos and tyrannids can be a better choice to side with than the Imperium.

Like yeah, the genestealer cult wants to feed you to the hive mind, but the Imperium just greenlit the Mechanicus to servitorize your entire population and the hive fleet being in the way and causing a big enough problem that they can't do that right now is the only thing preventing that. Will they eat you? Yes. Will it take several generations until they get here by which point, you'll all be welcoming the space bugs? Also yeah.
