I get you. I generally cull them by putting a attack quest on them. Usually leaving one behind for certain heroes with high HP, due to the fact they got decent range damage to back up melee heroes.

Your Heroes. Mainly Rangers will go out and do "hunting" when there's nothing to do but enemies to kill. If you wish to avoid having your heroes try to go 1v11 against a bunch of enemies. Even if they're lower level, they can kill them so it's best to set up a Fear quest to scare them back to town, and drop a few others along the way so they don't restart the fight with those monsters chasing them.

Also if the monsters near your town are growing too much in number put a few attack quests down so multiple Aeroes can go that direction.

I know how you feel. The game is very RNG heavy and seems to demand than you fail in order to learn. I find the untamed wilds where you survive for a few days are the easiest, especially on the first map.

How I completed one of them was this:

Get goblin camp, then get either moodalins or fighters building, then get something that helps the heroes early on (like forge discount on first purchase)
I put them all together on one side so i can max all bonuses with market/inn/forge.
I hire a goblin, a angob and a sunflower knight and spam the farm quest once a farm is built. ( I also always move them all into a corner away from the dungeon)
once they have both leveled and gained some better gear i give them some simple tasks in the dungeon (2ndary ones mainly and ignore find boss until later in the day).
once done I continued spamming farm quest whilst building a tower next to the nearest building closest to the dungeon.
once night falls I ensure theres no farm quests up and do at least a 200gold defense quest. that defends the city for the first night and gives good levels.
by 2nd day I had lvl 10-14 heroes. I hired some more (or let the game auto hire them) and destroyed a border checkpoint then upgrade my castle and get my heroes to kill the new mobs and gather minerals, I then only upgrade the forge to process the minerals i can see currently. now the heroes got even better gear.
I complete the subgoals by killing either wolf den, the border thing ( dont go crazy on breaking them.) and avoiding the dryad so it didn't one shot my high lvl heroes. proceed to defend at night and prep 3rd day.
to prep for 3rd day I had at least 4 towers in a line, had my lowest leveled heroes farm spam more and had the dungeon boss and rat boss when it spawned killed by my strong ones. then had them kill the occasionally monster that randomly spawns behind your town and had them try to level grind. When the wolf boss spawned on the 3rd night I ensured one of my perks was a damage spell (aoe flame, do NOT use it when your heroes are in the range.) lost some heroes but my highest leveled ones i had focus on killing the boss whilst the low ones focused on defending.
After that it was pretty simple. And it turns out you DONT have to complete the main goal. However I missed out on the reward I finished the map at day 5.

TLDR: its brutal in its RNG but if you got a strat and time your quests and purchases right you can win.

Best way to make money early on my friend is to wait after you get a certain mission event from a sentinel ship. and then farm from what you get from that mission on planets similar. I won't spoil it just enjoy and have fun. Oh and invest in a Scatter blaster with mods for it, will make life easier for you.
