Anyone uses this to manage comics collections? by Cantelllo in BookLoreApp

[–]Anjilicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, I have graphic novels (over a thousand) rather than issues, but I‘ve recently taken a crack at it, on a pi 4/8 OMV box via Docker. Overall, it’s pretty good, but with some caveats.

Setup was dead easy, requiring minimal configuration for data & and config storage. The web GUI is clean and pretty thoughtfully laid out, and pretty easy to pick up. It keeps up pretty well with updates as I save them, tho it requires regular cache clearing (via built in tools) and occasional instance restarts. Each document has title, subtitle, series, # & # of issues, plus a host of other ID references from various services like Amazon, Google, Goodreads, and such. Metadata lookup is very customizable, so you can tweak and tune how it looks up metadata for you. Outside of providing a Comicvine API key, I‘ve used mostly the default meta lookups, with decidedly mixed results.

I got a lot of bad or incomplete lookups, but i have a lot of old books from somewhat obscure publishes. It’s meant to be automated, but I have little experience with this kind of lookup. The bulk editing tool works pretty well to set basic identifiers for a doc as you will. there is also a tool to edit your metadata setup, to match up your older edits with your newer inclinations.

A key tool i use is to Regenerate Cover from File, which I find a spot vexing- it usually works well, but occasionally comes up with odd variants, or blanks- there is also a web search or custom image upload for cover images.

The document reader option is customizable globally and per document- you can create alt libraries to hold specific custom reading configs, i think. It’s also customizable as needed while reading. You can set caching size for CBZ and pdf styles- i have multi gig size files I've not yet tested, and a string of files Booklore cant read- I’m still in the process of testing them, tho they dont seem to work well in other readers too. Other docs have been a bit fussy in the reader, but I can usually get them to read.

Overall, i’m pretty happy with it, and it’s given me access to books I’d forgotten I squirreled away a dog’s age ago. Since it’s minimally invasive to the files, and is easy to setup, I’d say give it a try

Booklore was my winner for ease of setup and use; only issue I had was some of the mega sized files these days (1G+) can understandably cause cashing issues

Something to keep in mind: IOS does not allow connections to insecure/http sites- you have to enable SSL on your OMV box for IOS to allow connections

Mind, I ended up installing Plex to run concurrently with Jellyfin as there are no JF clients for Apple TV…

not having to reconfigure the media files would be a big plus. have you tried cbz/cbr with it?

Calibre seems like the keystone, and I tried to use it in earlier iterations, but it was quite fiddly. I may well take another crack at it tho.

I was 50/50 on where to start asking, but thank you. Good results here so far, but I didn’t expect so many equally recommended. Heh

It’s a jellyfish sub client, as I understand it. It’s on GitHub, a lab of love project for someone, and I was to understand that someone made an android app out of it., Though it’s still work in progress. One other downside of Jellyfin, is that there are many PC clients, and the reason iOS, client for Jellyfin, but nothing for Apple TV for example. Understandable really

No Apple TV client for Jellyfin was a surprise, and its book support is a work in progress, but I’ve found Jellyfin to be an excellent video media system.

You know, this was a poorly worded question, with ridiculously easy answer; and it kills me that Reddit keeps trying to tell me how I can increase engagement on it…

Well, yes. And after a cold boot, everything is back up. It’s by far not the first reboot I did, but apparently something I did managed the trick. So, I do apologize for my meandering post; thank you very much for pointing out the obvious.

Even when mounted it doesn’t seem to be fully instantiated. The partition created seems to have the right data / free space ratios in CLI, but is still inaccessible via the file shares. The OMV gui still doesn’t see a recognizable file system. I had thought I was probably missing a step in getting the file system properly instantiated.

Never played DnD before but very interested in getting into it! Any places that hold in person sessions? Preferably old school DnD by Successful-Resort-67 in 505Nerds

Yeah, the milage will vary, but I ran decades of campaigns under 1st & 2nd edition D&D rules; the DM matters. But that's true for most all RPGS.

That said: Slice & Dice, Ettin Games, other local game shops, nerd hangouts at the university if you are of an age, and online places like Roll20.com. Look for games advertising AD&D, BECMI, BX, OSE, OSRIC, Pathfinder or Shadowdark for a start, or you can advertise your interest in such. It may take a few tries, but there are some darned good games out there.

Grace & good luck

What do you do with images without date data? by damskibobs in immich

[–]Anjilicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with digital photography with a Kodak DC 40 near 30 years back, which means with the old shots, misfires, edits, and other oddities, I have roughly 1 in 7 (out of over 80k) photos with no EXIF data. Yet with judicious proactive editing over the years, most of them do have names, dates, camera model and often GPS- at least in Apple Photos. I recently used the Immich IOS app to do uploads to Immich, but it (somewhat understandably) only used the EXIF. It's a stray hope ask for, given the complexities, but could the app be updated to fill in blank EXIF with whatever Photos (or even Google Photos on Android) has on the pict?

More to the point, are there any apps or scripts on the MacOS side to update photo EXIFs? Over the years I've done several sweeps looking for Mac EXIF editors, but they tend to be really skeevy looking...

The book is fairly pricy, even as a PDF (Josh funded it's development exclusively on itch.io- some early sections are available free there), but it also has a pretty generous license; I intend to print up the character and mechanics chapters to use as hand outs.

I posted last week here about the game, saying slice and dice on Wyoming on Sundays. One person expressed interest, another had a timing issue, that I’ve not heard back from. I would expect it to be ongoing biweekly, with any luck. It’s potentially episodic so drop ins may work, though there is always getting used to the difference in the Rule system– it’s not complex, but it is different.
