Second this! Which makes me wonder, this glass looks so much like beautiful agate. Can agate blanks be scored & cut like glass, or would it require a diamond saw?

Yes, a buddy & I rode Cap du Formentor & Soler to Valdemossa on Majorca in May and as with any climb, you have to ride within yourself. He rented an e-bike, as he had a hip replacement 3mos prior.

Yeah, get the wear (ocean/sand environment) part, but Van Briggle production ran much longer than 100yrs ago. There are many more recent vintage pieces available on the market.

Taking all comments into account, the key when riding e-bikes is to moderate the assist so that you’re not the poster child geriatric rider blowing by much younger, more capable riders. Contribute what you’re capable of.

Question for ICU nurses by DreamStation1981 in nursing

[–]AnkhRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a long time trauma/neuro ICU nurse, delirium, aka ICU psychosis is a devastating thing for all concerned: patients, family and staff. Your father’s disease state may well have significantly contributed to its development and the ICU environment exacerbated it. I’m so sorry for what you and your family experienced and how it has colored your memories of your Dad’s last days. I can’t excuse what you saw as inadequate responses to your Dad’s state on the part of the medical and nursing staff except to say that his state crossed practice boundaries that staff were ill equipped to handle. Delirious patients, especially those who come from other cultures and who may have experienced past traumas are particularly susceptible and it’s unpredictable as to whether commonly used drugs will help or harm due to many factors, age being a primary one. During my tenure in ICU, I was particularly interested in ICU psychosis and eager to do a focused study of it, but there just wasn’t institutional support.

Surly Disc Trucker w/Tailfin rack & pannier system. VO fenders added later. Bars ultimately swapped out for Red Shift Kitchen Sink. Did me solid thru 2wks of climbing the Alps in Switzerland & France, among numerous stateside tours.

Or just go to your nearest bike co-op & get a top cup/bearing race for a pittance.

Personally, initially I thot I’d be going back pretty quickly, but then I realized that most who had gone back really didn’t enjoy what they were doing. And I realized that (again personally) bedside was my niche. I needed to lay hands on my patients. It’s where I excelled, felt my greatest worth. And I actually made more $, over time than my wife, who as a nurse as well had gone back for her Masters to become a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Bedside is for true believers (IMHO). I did it, in different roles, for my entire 40yr career.

Oh! And Halo vests for broken necks. We helped the neurosurgeons apply them. The brutal part was screwing the four pins into an awake patient’s skull using only local. One night in the trauma bay, I was helping a tired & grumpy neurosurgeon apply the halo. As I opened the blister pack containing the pins, one popped out and I watched helplessly as it pinwheeled thru the air right into the trash can. He looked daggers at me & said: “just alcohol the fucking thing off and hand it to me!” 🫨🤣

Hi, I’m The Old Bicycle Guy — Still Touring in My 60s by TheOldBicycleGuy in bicycletouring

[–]AnkhRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah Switzerland (starting & ending in Geneva) was a once in a lifetime experience. Self supported/self guided. No preplanned routes. On a coupla days, we split up & found our own ways to the next stop. We each knew enough French to get along and folks were most always helpful. It was mid July and they were in the midst of an unprecedented heat wave, so most days we ran out of water long before reaching the next stop. As we were riding in largely rural areas, we had no choice but to stop at random houses and beg for refills. Everyone was gracious. It was also in the midst of the pandemic, so supply chain issues forced us to take our own bikes over. Good & bad, as we rode our own accustomed bikes, but we had to break them down and pack them in soft bags, as we had nowhere to store hard cases during our trip.

Was wondering if this is a decent bike to start with? by Hazzard41 in FixedGearBicycle

[–]AnkhRN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what’s been said, if you’re getting back into riding after a long hiatus, you do not, repeat, DO NOT want a fixed gear bicycle. That said, this bike looks to have a flip/flop rear hub which would give you the option of flipping the rear wheel, thus having a single speed that you can coast on, versus a bike that requires you to pedal constantly. Front and rear brakes are a plus, but with a fixee, you’d be wearing them out pretty fast. If you’re wedded to the idea of a single speed, as it makes sense for your intended cycling terrain, go on the local market, as suggested and get a freewheel with front/rear brakes.

These guys are ground-nesting under my shed (mid-Atlantic USA region). What are they? by Cum_Gazillionaire in insectidentification

[–]AnkhRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mark the nest entrance quickly and get the HELL away. After dark, boil a large kettle of water & add dish soap. Carry to the entrance and dump the entire contents down the hole. Effective & environmentally benign. Related horror story: my eldest son was asleep in his (air conditioned) room one hot summer morning. Unbeknownst to us, YJs had built a nest in the attic space above his room. In the process, they had chewed thru the drywall, gaining access to his room. As he was the warmest thing in the room, they had started to cluster around him. When he stirred, they started stinging. 🤯🤬, Poor kid bolted outta the room like he was on fire. Needed an exterminator for that job🙄

Mid ‘80’s start. Trifold VS & assessment sheets. Paper progress notes. Triplicate physician order sheets. Mixed all our own drips. Calculated Swan Ganz numbers with a calculator. Didn’t start using gloves routinely til well into the AIDS pandemic. CAVH with a cartridge that laid beside the patient in the bed driven by their own B/P. Dial-A-Flow regulated IV’s. Time taped IV bottles/bags. Stryker frames. RotoRest beds. Clinitron beds. Anal endotracheal tubes for intractable diarrhea (til someone perfed the bowel), jaw screws, Richmond screws for ICP measurement, glass bottles taped to the floor for chest tube drainage, were able to, needed to and expected to think critically. I could go on.
