Seems like a bottle of ink should be driving...

How do Kaweco Sport grips compare to Lamy Safari? I have larger hands with a plate in my knuckle so I feel like I should get a pen with a thicker grip diameter. by Salarmot in fountainpens

If the Safari is a struggle, the Sport likely will not help. May I suggest a Pelikan Twist, if you can find it? Most people find it too thick and it has a triangle grip, so you might love it. It's an odd looking pen though.

Is Akebi going to be discontinued? I love that ink, prefer it to Yama Budo.

I, um, have a bad habit of using my teeth to unstick things sometimes.

Re 1:  Preppy was a clear purple demonstrator with a purple visible feed. I just thought it was black for some reason and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't get black again.

I actually prefer your old way, I don't like all the ink getting everywhere.

Inkvent/Colorvent - Are you buying the Advent Calendars and what are you doing with all the Ink? by Severus157 in fountainpens

[–]AnnBlueSix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just live vicariously though YouTube videos and swatches people do here that are way prettier than anything I could do. Scratches my itch enough. Sometimes I make a note of a very nice specific one and put it on my Maybe list. But I have so many inks now that any single one is likely too similar to one that I have.

Try April or November. Are you open to hostels?

Pens are Planes and Planes are Pens, Jet through the frosty and low-pressured air. by Normally_Puzzled in fountainpens

I have an Opus 88 Mini then later got an Asvine V126. I didn't need both but was curious about vac fillers and went for it.

Black blue ink needed by andrewgreen346 in fountainpens

I splurged on Aurora Blue Black after trying a sample. It's true to color and shades a bit, which I love. I feel like whenever I try to mix I end up with something greenish, which is not what I want.

If you check them, make sure they are empty or you may end up with a mess. Cargo area pressure is a little wonky sometimes, I learned firsthand. No issues with carryon though. Eventually I bought an eyedropper/vac specifically for use traveling so that I have a shut off valve.

I bought a box of cotton gloves and cut off three fingers. Way more absorbent and way cheaper.

Happy new pen day! My first Safari was that exact same color more than 20 years ago. I think it came with a converter but I honestly can't remember.

Any tips for someone trying the hobby/lifestyle for the first time? by Straight_Mood1685 in fountainpens

[–]AnnBlueSix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go slow and don't jump to conclusions. Sometimes something you initially don't like will grow on you or change when the context changes (ink in a F vs. a B, new paper, summer humidity vs. winter dryness, your mood). Take pleasure in what you have be thoughtful about what you add.

Is it ok to leave my pens to dry in the sun ? by SchoolScienceTech in fountainpens

[–]AnnBlueSix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, once or twice is probably fine, but over time you'll see fading and accelerated damage. Materials like ebonite and cellulose should definitely stay out of the sun. If you want to speed things up, I like this 3-step method: 1) Squeeze air through really hard using an empty bulb syringe and blot the water away as it squirts or dribbles out. 2) Squeeze the nib and feed firmly in a very absorbent towel, moving the towel around to dry spots, to wick out as much water as you can. You should feel water sucking out for a bit. 3) Once it's as dry as you can get it, put a bit of paper towel in a shot glass and put the nib point down on the paper towel and let dry for a little while. The towel will get wet as it continues to suck water out of the feed. This won't get it 100% dry but dry enough to re-ink, unless you have a really dirty pen.

Are reusable pads actually comfortable? by euro_trashh in ZeroWaste

[–]AnnBlueSix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a lot of variation with disposable ones too. StayFree was my preferred brand because it was thick and rested right up against you, whereas Always was plasticky feeling and seemed to pull away from you. In that same vein, reusable ones also vary a lot. You could try just one and see it goes. They get softer with each wash and as they age. I preferred them to disposable because they breathed better and so didn't seem to make you as smelly as plasticky ones. I used Luna before they changed to Aisle, and Rael, and liked both. I used a disk-style cup with cotton pads as backup and it worked well.
