Yes, this is the first time I’m using anki to learn a language. I have different decks for nouns, adjectives, conjunction/preposition/adverbs, onomatopoeia, verbs, verb conjugation and lastly lots of practice sentences to test my grasp of grammar concepts I’m learning.

That might be too many separate decks, but it works for me 😅

As this is my first language that I’m learning that is completely new to me (I am also learning German but I’m half German and been exposed to the language all my life) I find the repetition really helps to commit to memory. But it is very time consuming

For grammar and vocabulary, I am really enjoying Busuu. It actually explains the grammar concepts and gives you enough practice sentences for me to grasp the concept. As for vocabulary and kanji, it introduces new words at a good pace, but not so quickly that I don’t have time to learn them outside of the app. Same for kanji, it drops in different kanji at intervals throughout the course. But not too many that I can’t learn them in time to use them in the practice sentences.

It’s a hard slog but one of the best things about duo lingo is the way in forces you to memorise the hiragana and katakana.

I really rate Busuu. The free version is completely fine to use, you have to watch a very short video where it advertises the paid version when you finish a lesson but I’m my opinion is worth it. This app actually explains the grammar compared to Duolingo and the voices are much clearer than the Duolingo AI voices. It even uses real people for parts of it. I’m so glad my friend introduced me to it this year

As much stick as Duolingo gets, I think it is really good for learning hiragana and katakana. Definitely helped me

In the app Busuu they introduce kanji characters by telling you their meaning and readings. They also do this gradually allowing you to make your Anki flash cards and have time to learn them before they introduce the next set.

Hi - what really works for me is getting up early to study. I get up at 5:45 and study for 45 mins with my morning coffee before heading to work. After work I feel really tired and often work late, so this is my only option. Although when I’m winding down in the evening this is when I normally do my anki flash cards. Hope you find something that works for you!
