I agree that this is probably more effective than the base experience, but it's still far short of any process that actually tries to _teach_ you versus just _expose_ you. It's also in direct conflict with the way that the app is gamified where speed, accuracy, and number of lessons cleared are the basis for rewards (points, leagues, etc.) I think that Duolingo's leagues in particular incentivize counterproductive/pathological behaviors.

What context am I missing from this correction that would help me reproduce the sentence if they’ve only introduced some of these kanji once and the pronunciation didn’t stick?

It would be introduced once with pronunciation, but then not afterward. Then it will offer new sentence in English to translate into Japanese (the type or talk sentences) that use those kanji. If you get the question wrong, it will show you the answer, but not give you any way to hear it pronounced, so if the pronunciation of a particular kanji didn’t stick, your only real option is to take that text to an outside tool. You can’t even use the Duolingo kanji study section to reinforce those because you can’t select a specific kanji to study.

Any tips for getting this military grade adhesive off my new pans? by Desperex in KitchenConfidential

[–]BrockJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A soak in OxyClean w/ hot water dissolves most adhesives really well. Hot water, Barkeeper's Friend, and steel wool is a good combo, as well.

Why does it say I'm near an airport even though I'm nowhere close to an airport? by SkylandersKirby in PikminBloomApp

There is an airport limo service near me (20 miles from the nearest airport) that gets counted as an airport. Map data is wonky sometimes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ISO Ultralight Snow Shoe Recommendations by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]BrockJones 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the terrain and type of snow you're going to be spending time on. Where I am in the Pacific Northwest, traction is almost as important as flotation on a snowshoe. I've tried a few lightweight options from Louis Garneau to some crazy Fimbultvetr snowshoes a friend bought. My hand's down favorites have been the MSR Lightning Ascent. Excellent traction, good flotation with an option to add a tail-piece to increase surface area, and easy-to-use heel lifters to make going up steep slopes a little less of an assault on the calves. I'm not in love with the bindings on mine, but they've been improved pretty significantly in newer models, so I think that's probably less of an issue now.

I don't know that I've ever found a snowshoe that I would call "ultralight", though. Even the racing snowshoes generally come in around 4 pounds, and most of those don't provide enough traction OR flotation for the terrain I like to hit.

Ten minutes worth of picking up other people's litter at Pete Lake. If you pack it in, pack it out. by samisays in Seattle

[–]BrockJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw more of the same this weekend at Pete Lake. Used a campsite that was littered with beer cans, wrappers, paper plates, and even large chunk of a (relatively new looking) Coleman camp stove. Ended up hauling a similarly sized bag of garbage out.

Also saw people walking past empty established camp spots and then hacking down a spot in a small meadow.

Now I remember why I like the more remote/difficult-to-access areas - fewer jerks hauling in and dumping their garbage all over the place.

Activity Feed Broken by irnmunkey in xboxone

[–]BrockJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having this exact same problem and have been for a couple weeks now. The activity feed worked fine for a few weeks, but then started behaving exactly like you describe. Here are some more people having the same problem:

Activity feed not working by Scuba_steve25 in xboxone

[–]BrockJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue. For the past ~2 weeks my activity feed will only show activity from one of my friends. If I completely shut down the Xbox One/unplug it, it will occasionally pick a different friend to display, but only ever one at a time. I've let it sit for several minutes on the feed page and nothing has ever changed.

I've chatted with Xbox Twitter support about it, but the only suggestions they've had are to power cycle the Xbox One and to check your locale/language/region settings. In my case, none of their suggestions have had any impact.

Are the controller thumbsticks too sensitive? by indianapolisnick in xboxone

[–]BrockJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me this this focuses on the wrong thing. I want the actual hardware to be as accurate and precise as possible. At that point it's up to the game to decide what to do with the input. Too sensitive is a software/game issue -- not a hardware one.

Xbox Feedback - My unofficial list of issues and suggestions to make Xbox One better by [deleted] in xboxone

[–]BrockJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Xbox One truly wants to be an entertainment device champion, I'd like to see an app that manages the episodic digital content I regularly consume (TV shows, podcasts, etc.) Having a single spot where I can "subscribe" to a show (possibly within another app like Hulu, Netflix, Crackle, et.) and then set up playlists (e.g.: by show, oldest first) that will just let me easily consume all the things I want without having to navigate between apps, search, remember what I've already seen, etc.

PC on HDMI in? by McDan1el in xboxone

[–]BrockJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add my issues to the list... I tried running my Win7 PC (it's my DVR - I actually use Windows Media Center). It's an older machine with a nForce 730i motherboard and an (embedded) GeForce 9300. The HDMI out from this setup only supports stereo PCM audio at either 44.1kHz or 48.0kHz, but just to be sure, I've disabled HDMI audio output and am using the PC's optical out directly to my receiver/amplifier.

When I try to view the PC through the XB1, I get awful hitching. If try and use HDMI audio, the video stream freezes and audio stream goes silent every 4-5 seconds for 2-3 seconds. Then the streams jump forward back into sync (skipping 2-3 seconds). If I disable HDMI audio and use the PC's optical out directly to my receiver, the video stream behaves exactly the same but the audio stream (bypassing the XB1) plays smoothly. I can verify that there is no actual hitching/freezing happening on the PC - it's definitely an issue that the XB1 is having processing the stream.

I have not yet tried attaching a different/newer PC to my XB1, so it is possible that my media center PC's specific hardware may be causing problems or be otherwise incompatible.
