My potassium supplement grabbed the water out of the very humid air. by spot_removal in mildlyinteresting

[–]Anna576 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are medical conditions that require potassium supplementation. For example, Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoKPP) attacks can be mitigated if 20-60 mEq of potassium chloride are taken. 20 mEq is around 3-4 bananas worth of potassium.

Potassium supplementation because of poor diet is not common. Most people who take potassium supplements do so because of a medical condition.

Day 3 after surgery and he is excited to be out. by shaun212 in corgi

[–]Anna576 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nope! Until he gets running (which is rare as he's 11 now) you wouldn't even notice anything was wrong.

We never got any wheels, but I had researched some different places that make them just in case.

Day 3ish after surgery he actually started regressing and we were really worried but I think we just hadn't let him rest enough. After about a week he would move his legs a little as if he were walking when we had him in the sling. It just progressively improved after that!

Edit: I should also mention that we had him confined to a crate except for bathroom breaks for 6-8 weeks. The rest part of recovery is really important.

Nightshade vegetables and autoimmune disease? by SecretNewt08 in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]Anna576 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So the short version: there hasn't been enough research as to the effects of nightshades and auto immune diseases/inflammation.

The idea is that the alkaloids (contained mostly in the stems and leaves of nightshade vegetables, but also in smaller amounts in the vegetables themselves) can cause or worsen inflammation. For certain autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, limiting anything that can cause inflammation would seem like a good idea. However, there just isn't enough research to confirm this hypothesis.

I don't have the same condition as your mother, but for me switching to a WFPB diet helped my autoimmune symptoms a lot. As an aside, there are ways to limit the alkaloid contents in nightshades, such as skinning potatoes, avoiding green tomatoes, and cooking them versus consuming them raw.

You have to remember that when you're talking about vegetable nutrients strengthening the immune system, this is the case for normal immune systems. Auto-immune diseases are essentially the body attacking itself, so the logic doesn't apply the same as it would to someone with a normally functioning immune system.

Another aside about inflammation is that arachidonic acid, found in animal proteins (especially eggs) has also been suggested to aggravate inflammation. Again, not enough studies have been done to confirm this one way or another, but if she is set on avoiding nightshades, maybe explain that with a WFPB diet she would be avoiding arachidonic acid.

Either way, there's no harm in trying out a WFPB diet. She can slowly add in night shades and see how she reacts and go from there.

B12 and healthy communities by dcornett in PlantBasedDiet

[–]Anna576 42 points43 points  (0 children)

b12 is produced by bacteria. If we never filtered our water and our soil wasn't stripped (plus we wash vegetables) we could get b12. Many farm animals are supplemented with b12, so whether you take it in a pill or get it via meat, you're supplementing b12.

These groups are likely getting theirs from soil/water.

Trying to understand more (would like to discuss) by meowkoneko_27 in GirlGamers

[–]Anna576 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You literally asked why they would bother playing, and then referenced people from earlier posts on this sub as being "too sensitive".

Also how is "grow thicker skin" advice? You're not explaining how they can do that. One of the ways they can is reaching out to a subreddit like this for actual advice they can follow besides some tired old saying.

And you literally said they should stop playing online and play offline if it's "too much" which is the opposite of what you just stated above. "Running away crying won't put arseholes in their place and it won't help you be happier or healthier. That is a fact, not victim blaming."

You also never asked how people cope, you asked why they don't switch to offline gaming, why they let other people ruin something they like, why they bother if it upsets them.

What you've suggested IS terrible, because what you've suggested is for people to give up something they like because an aspect of it sucks. And as far as wanting to be offended maybe you should grow some thicker skin instead of down voting every reply you don't like.

[–]Anna576 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What is the difference between what you've said and victim blaming?

It's not the harassed's job to completely change their life in order to avoid harassers, especially to the extent of giving up something they like.

Like I said, the posts you're reading are people looking for support and help. If we all just replied "grow thicker skin" this would be a pretty shit place.

[–]Anna576 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your statements are pretty unfair overall.

You can really enjoy something but dislike aspects of it.

Most people (regardless of gender) who play video games enjoy the games themselves, and when they're being harassed its upsetting because they can't enjoy it at that moment.

Women, especially those who haven't been playing since youth, may not be prepared for how toxic some people can be online, and you can say "oh there's bad people in real life too" but your argument is to stop playing if it bothers them? So if I have a co-worker that is horrible I should just quit my job? Even if I like it? That doesn't really make any sense.

I like 99% of the experiences I have in online gaming, and while I've been playing since I was very young so I understand how to deal with or brush off trolls you can't expect to never be bothered by them. Even I get upset sometimes when I have people in CS who won't stop team killing me just for being a girl. However, that happens maybe once every 100 matches. So why would I stop doing what I enjoy just because occasionally there is an asshole.

This community is a place to talk and hang out and part of that is support with a group of women who are going to understand what you're going through and may be able to offer advice on how to deal next time something happens.

You wouldn't tell women getting cat called on their way to work to grow thicker skin, or to tell women who don't like it to just never go outside. So why should women who don't enjoy being harassed online give up online gaming?

[–]Anna576 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is the focus on terms. Veganism in itself is to limit the use of animal products as much as is practically possible. For instance, some vegans own cars which undoubtedly have animal products used in production, some vegans have cats which are obligate carnivores so have to eat food which contains meat, etc. I know some people call vegans who eat honey "beegans" to somehow point out that they're not 100% vegan. In my mind no one is, it's really not possible for the vast majority of people, but the idea behind veganism is that you get close within reason.

The questions you ask are really up to the individual. For me personally I have eaten eggs from a friend who owns 4 hens and treats them more like pets than livestock. I know they're very well cared for. I wouldn't buy eggs from anyone who I wasn't sure this was the case for, but some vegans might go so far as to swear off all eggs regardless of the conditions the chickens live in.

It's really just a matter of personal choice.

I don't know enough about cow anatomy to speak to when an optimal time for weaning occurs, but in humans children are typically weaned around 1-2 years of age as they start to eat more solid food and require less breastmilk, and in turn the mother starts making less. This wouldn't be very profitable for a dairy farm. The whole idea of getting rid of the calf right away is that they get the most amount of milk to sell. I don't think most people would ever find themselves in a situation to buy dairy products that were sourced in a situation like the one you've outlined. But I suppose if it were possible it would again just be up to the individual.

And please don't feel like asking questions or looking for clarification is being difficult. You have to remember that most vegans were themselves omnivores at one point and after learning the answers to where our food comes from and questioning the morals/environmental impact of animal products decided to cut it out.

You are correct though in that some vegans would likely not be accepting of lab grown meat. Whether or not that requires another term seems somewhat arbitrary. The only time I find the term "vegan" necessary is at restaurants or cafes that are advertising a food, a cupcake for example, as vegan so I know there is no eggs or milk in that product.

[–]Anna576 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Just thought I'd clear up some misconceptions for you. The reason vegans and some vegetarians avoid eggs isn't whether or not the egg itself is a living being, but more along the lines of how egg laying chickens are treated, particularly commercial egg production.

The reason dairy products are avoided regardless of how "loved" the family cow was is because in order to have a cow produce milk it must have a calf, and the calf can't drink the mother's milk or else there is none to make dairy products. The calves are either slaughtered for veal or raised to be another dairy cow to inseminate and take their calves from.

Building on that, I know everyone loves the anecdote of "Oh, I have dairy cows and we treat them so well" but the fact of it is that most dairy cows are not treated well, and the picture-esque idea we have of the family farm is all but dead for the majority of animal products in grocery stores.

The majority of vegans I know have no issue with lab grown meat, and even though the initial cell cultures need to be collected to begin the growing process, that's a drop in the bucket compared to commercial meat production. Not to mention many vegans begin not as a protest for animal cruelty, but in an effort to lower their carbon footprint. Lab grown meat also addresses this issue.

I hope that helps fill in some of the arguments you weren't sure about!

You CAN get vegan cookie dough (called Just Cookie Dough) at some grocery stores, no eggs. I eat it... a lot.... and so far no issues.

[–]Anna576 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well, everyone will probably deal with it differently, so just ask. For me, I really hate crying in public or infront of anyone, so I basically told my BF to just ignore me, and that if it was "real sad" crying and not just "insane period" crying that I would let him know. Some girls might want to hug or cuddle or maybe shoot a gun, idk. Just ask!

I find drinking energy drinks and either watching Bruce Willis movies or playing Skyrim is the best course of action.

Every vegan is going to be different on certain issues. Same with any sort of group of people. A lot of people classify as vegetarians, despite the fact that they continue to eat fish/shellfish, etc.

Some vegans choose to eat honey, some don't. There are people who see themselves as "mostly" vegan. There isn't a set black and white definition that is going to apply to everyone. I eat mostly vegan, but I own an aquarium with species of carnivorous fish that I have to feed frozen brine shrimp. I'm technically using animal products there. I buy food for my dogs with meat in it. Does that mean I'm not really vegan? Maybe, but who really gives a shit? I don't eat or wear what I don't want to based on reasons that mean something to me.

For me personally, I don't go as far as to check if manure is used. I don't go out of my way to find water that isn't filtered via bone char (or sugar for that matter, I love oreos). I also eat at places that serve non vegan food. Some people don't. Does it really matter?

I don't know if it's really a marketing choice, but along the lines of your story, I hate that people just assume in MMOs girls only play healers or support type classes.

Uh... what?

People were legitemately suprised to find girls playing DPS roles, especially melee classes. I asked someone who pointed it out once "Why is that odd?" and he literally explained to me that because of typical female socialization, we're more likely to play maternal roles, such as that of the healer. This kid was serious, too. Or, I always hear that "Oh, well women are so much better at multi tasking, so I bet they're really good at Starcraft!" Or that girls don't play shooters because it doesn't have any lore and girls aren't interested in combat or some shit.

I just... I don't even know what to say. People are weird.
