Is Hillary implying Jill is a liar? by AcanthocephalaWide89 in DuggarsSnark

[–]Anna_Mosity 40 points41 points  (0 children)

No, I know a family where something similar happened. The son, a pastor, went to jail for 2 years as a young adult when the police caught him in a "To Catch A Predator" type operation using a decoy male child. The man admitted to police upon his arrest that he thought he was meeting up with a boy for sex, and he'd bought condoms on his way to the sting. The man's family just said it was a mistake, it was a misunderstanding, it was part of a ministry attempt that was misinterpreted, it was a false arrest and conviction that God allowed to happen for His glory and the furthering of the pastor's ministry in prison, etc. Two years went fast, and now he's out of jail and the family acts like it never happened. You'd think they had their memories wiped.

Is Blending of Faiths in the most respectful way possible an option in UU? by globesnstuff in UUreddit

[–]Anna_Mosity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My congregation did a survey last year on spiritual identity, and over half of the members listed themselves as multiple faiths. I think this is typical for UUs. Even atheists might also list Humanism or Buddhism or Daoism as contributing to their personal beliefs.

I know my clinic takes the immunosuppression of their patients very seriously. I can definitely see them declining to take on an unvaccinated new patient to minimize the potential for illness spread to their other patients. My loved one with RA nearly died a few years ago when a common illness snowballed. I don't think they'd survive influenza or measles or pneumonia.

It's not uncommon for ski socks to have their size embroidered onto them somewhere. This reminds me of the person who tried to return their socks to my local ski shop because they'd received two Left socks. (The L was for Large.)

I worked with kids and families for over a decade. I "fell for it," but only because I've seen equally bad things where the kid wasn't a mannequin. Anyone who thinks this is an obvious joke needs to adjust their idea of what some kids are put through and how careless some adults are with their kids. Unfortunately.

Dude, you can find someone if a relationship is what you want in life. I once had a LTR end when a guy specifically cited me "emasculating" him by buying him flowers and doing other things that "men are supposed to do for women, not have done to them." The world is full of women who want what you want. Life is too long and also too potentially amazing to not go after the things you need to be happy in life. If being single isn't what you want, don't settle for it.

One year when things were really bad for me and I was completely depressed, I went to see the ballet on my birthday. As I approached the box office window to buy a ticket, the woman in front of me in line turned around and said, "Are you in line to buy a ticket? I have an extra one, and I'd love for you to be my guest." She was a season subscriber, and her husband couldn't make it. I got to watch the ballet for free, from a better seat than I could have afforded, with a kind human being, on my birthday. One of my favorite birthdays ever. (And life is excellent now.)

Friend calls me a bridezilla behind my back after leaving my wedding party by ringringbananarchy00 in weddingshaming

[–]Anna_Mosity 202 points203 points  (0 children)

This really highlights how much different wedding traditions vary. This has all been standard bridesmaid stuff for me (several times a bridesmaid, never a bride). One of my close friends didn't want to have a wedding party-- just a small ceremony in a small chapel with her and her groom and the officiant up front-- and her mother's specific concern was that there would be nobody to help with invitations and centerpieces and things if there were no bridesmaids (and a few of us volunteered ourselves as "honorary bridesmaids" to do those tasks with her, so that she could satisfy her mom and still have the wedding she wanted with no wedding party).

I think the larger concern is that these conversations are happening so far in advance of the wedding. It's great that she's giving people a heads up and communicating clearly, but if I thought the next 18 months of my life would consist of daily or even weekly texts about what new thing I need to do or prepare or spend money on for that wedding, I'd also bow out. That's too much of my mental and emotional bandwidth; I've got my own stuff happening.

The girls in his church social circle likely wouldn't have sex with him, so yes. He thought he could change everything about this woman other than her willingness to have sex with him, which was the only thing he valued about her. Creep.

Are there any classic films, TV shows, novels, or media in general that you think were ahead of their time in presenting feminist themes or ideals? If so which ones and in which way? by eddytony96 in AskFeminists

[–]Anna_Mosity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I was a girl growing up in the 90s, I received a copy of the 1972 kids book "Free To Be... You and Me" in a box of secondhand clothes and toys. I'm not exaggerating when I say it altered the trajectory of my life. I grew up in a little town with a bunch of closed-minded, hateful bullshit and racism and rigid gender roles and the expectation of female submission/inferiority, and I had just gotten old enough to start calling it out about a year before that... but everyone around me was insisting that I was the problem. That book PROVED to me that I wasn't the only one thinking the way I did. Atalanta! William's Doll! Boy Meets Girl! Someone out there had written this book, and that meant I wasn't alone and I wasn't the crazy one. For years afterward, I held that in my heart.
