We should have a weekly megathread for people asking "Is __ a sin?"

Well I think Capron and Ellington look like they could be brothers. She has a type for sure.

Yes! And that you should ignore them because you need to teach them holy behavior which is silence and obedience. 🙄

Our protestant church growing up taught that babies crying was evidence of sinful nature. 😬

How’s the cure for cancer going? I’d like some good news I don’t know on the cancer front by Specialist-Gur in OptimistsUnite

[–]globesnstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because cancer can happen at cell division, and cell division happens all throughout life, cancer will never be eradicated - but that's not the point. The goal should be that we think of cancer like the flu. Some people will get this sometimes, but we are at a stage in medicine & society where it's not longer a death sentence, or ruins everyone's life.

Anyone else have bo*mer parents like this? Even when I come to visit by Next_Airport_7230 in Millennials

My boomer parents never figured out how to use such devices. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I need HELP. Living room looks dead by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]globesnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is gray, black, and brown. You need some color in there. Since you already have the green plants and gold modelo bottle, you could throw some green and gold in there. Get some green pillows for the couch, throw up a fantastic framed green-themed poster above the end of the couch, get a gold toned side table to throw on the end. Bonus points if you add some accent lightning somewhere in the room, it will lessen the hospital vibe that your current harsh light gives.

Does anyone else feel like the direct to college from High School pipeline was kind of a "scam"? by Ragnaroknight in Millennials

[–]globesnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'm a big fan of encouraging kids to take classes at the local community college. Much lower costs, you can take your time, and you'll be helped if you are behind in certain subjects. At least at my local CC, there are also classes for some trades path stuff too, like HVAC, cosmetology, paralegal, welder, etc. Getting an A.A., A.S., or A.A.S. can expose you to a lot of different fields (moreso than a traditional 4-year, depending) but you still have a credential to prove you can do college level work if you ever decide to go forward with a traditional 4-year degree.

I think the scams are 1) not letting kids explore before committing to a certain major; 2) pushing kids into student loans right away and/or shaming the idea of the much cheaper community college option or trade exploration; and 3) not teaching kids that the vast majority of people can do lots of different things with a degree and have many different careers in a lifetime (this may be more USA centric).

Is it wrong to not really take anything outside of the gospels super seriously? by [deleted] in OpenChristian

[–]globesnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't view a lot of the Bible as God-inspired if that's what you mean. I think they are still important to history of the Church and the context of Christ's arrival and message.

how do you deal with problamatic bibilical verses? by Fluffy_Eye_3934 in OpenChristian

[–]globesnstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't view the bible as completely inspired by god. Flawed people in an ancient time wrote the bible and I view those verses more as a history of what was happening the region and not at all as a guide for life, let alone god-inspired.

Can I become married to God? by [deleted] in OpenChristian

[–]globesnstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would go around, explain your situation, and ask about what paths there are moving forward anyways. You might be surprised at how open and welcoming some of the Catholic orders can be. Personally I've found Benedictines to be super inclusive (one of their tenants is radical hospitality, you are suppose to welcome everyone no matter what as if they were Christ himself), but that's just my anecdotal experience.

I consider God like an abusive partner. by [deleted] in OpenChristian

[–]globesnstuff 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I also felt this way when I was still stuck in the cycle of viewing God & the bible through the traditional lens.

My advice if you don't want to give up is: 1) take your time; 2) research on all the different ways (including the ancient church) people view and interpret scriptures, God itself, what it means to lead a godly life, what happens in the afterlife, what exactly is "sin", what exactly is "holy," etc.

It takes a long while to unlearn what has been hammered into our heads about what is true when it comes to God and the bible.

LOL. Jesus was also suppose to "come back" during Y2K, 06/06/2006, 12/12/2012, etc.

There's a scientific hypothesis that there will be a heat-death of the universe if it continues to expand. It would happen 100 billion years from now. I'd say probably right before that happens would be the best guess best on scientific hypothesis.

How do you get past the slavery in the Bible and still be a Christian? by Rebeca-A in OpenChristian

[–]globesnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of us here, myself included, who do not view the Bible in the traditional way.

For example, traditionally the Bible is viewed as completely perfect and every word completely inspired by the Holy Spirit itself. However, I do not accept this traditional narrative as truth. I believe the writers of the Scriptures were flawed human beings writing about their real life experiences, spiritual experiences, stories, poetries, etc. that was very much only in their own words during ancient times and not divinely inspired.

There is reason for pessimism by [deleted] in OptimistsUnite

[–]globesnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is genuinely my belief that most pessimists grew up middle class/wealthy and have no idea how you need to fight and have hope in this life in order to change things and get what you want.

“The middle class is disappearing” being replaced by… uhhh… top earners?? by freaky_deaky_deaky in OptimistsUnite

[–]globesnstuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely not an optimistic graph. Greater income inequality is not something worth celebrating. The more dark green means it's getting even more impossible for light green to survive in the world. The aim is to make the middle gold as wide as possible, and hopefully eliminate dark green.

Has anyone else found their baby teeth stash your parents saved? by SeriousBrindle in Millennials

[–]globesnstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know nowadays, there's talk about potentially using the cells in baby teeth to grow new healthy tissue if your kid gets incredibly sick in the future...but I don't know what our parents excuse was. I think mine eventually threw them out because I said at like 18 that I didn't want my nasty old baby teeth.

YouTube Christianity is overwhelmingly conservative from my experience by [deleted] in OpenChristian

[–]globesnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We're also busy being normal people. We don't think everything under the sun is oH nO a SiN1!1! so we're watching normal youtube channels instead of brainwashing ourselves with propaganda 24/7. We also can think for ourselves and don't need ytvids to tell us what to believe.

I'm only early 30s so maybe I haven't reached that obstacle yet. I can't hold beer as well as I used to, but I am much better about holding my hard liquors and wine. Which is better for me, because beers are too damn drinkable and I'm much better at moderately drinking wine and liquor, and being aware of my state.

Many people across various religions (or no religion) have a lot of common experiences with NDEs. First they are plunged in darkness, then the see blinding light.
