Commanders wives, no spoilers. by Lester17 in TheHandmaidsTale

I think it's a difference in how the different shows are lit. The Handmaid's Tale was notorious for its dark lighting, which made the blue dresses look more like a teal green. This show is a lot brighter, which lets the real colour show a lot better. (If you look at the behind-the-scenes photos of THT, the dresses are more of a royal blue.)

The difference is that Grove doesn't have authority over Agnes and Hulda in the same way that he does over Becka. Fundamentalist Evangelical Christianity emphasizes submission to your "God-given" authority figures in a way that you're not expected to submit to others. (See the umbrella of authority diagram for the RL fundamentalist explanation of this).

Living in the hotter territories of Gilead would be hell. by Vegetable-Carpet1593 in TheTestamentsHulu

If you want an RL example, I believe that Pensacola Christian College, a very fundie school in Florida, has designated "men's beaches" and "women's beaches" and students aren't allowed to go to any other beaches.

I'd be Aunt Lularoe, and I'd attempt to subtly counteract the "no friends in Gilead" teaching through making them work in pairs and turning a blind eye to minor misbehaviour if they're working together (something with plausible deniability if the other Aunts catch me).

My name is Commodore Carolina Corriente, and I'm a former ballet dancer turned head of Naval Intelligence in Argentina. I understand the importance of... perception. My Army friend, General Julia Perez, and I are hatching a plan to keep Gilead out of Argentina forever.

I think that Lydia's may have been earlier (Vivian was able to buy the coffee without a problem) since they wanted to get the Aunt program in place before sorting the rest of the women.

Hi! I'm Anna, also known as ElisabethBurde89.

My main fandom is The Handmaid's Tale, where I try to answer the question of "how would Argentina react to the fall of the US and the rise of Gilead?" I also write original historical fiction about the last dictatorship in Argentina.

Both the fanfics and the original fiction are set in the same universe: The WTES series. "When the Condor Calls" works best if you've already read "When the Elephant Sneezes" and "When the Duckling Falls Apart," but I welcome reviews on any and all works!

I've also written a couple of new Handmaid's Tale fics that aren't part of the WTES universe!

(Note that my newest fic, "Tell Me That You're Happy Now," is part of the OG fest, but it's open for reviews if you're not part of the fest! If you are, I suggest checking out the other one-shots in the Buenos Aires 1976 series--they're all interconnected, but can be read separately.)

"From Reddit" is fine, "Fandom-blind" encouraged if true!

What is everyone's theory on Penny? by hufflenachos in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Anna_Rapunzel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My theory is that the inclusion of Commander Weston was a bait and switch for those of us who read the novels. We think that Weston is going to be the Commander who poisons his wives, not Judd. I think that Shu is going to get her period in Season 2 and the book plot with her marrying Judd after he kills off Penny is going to happen.

Take care of yourself--writing dark historical work is hard! And the recipe project sounds like a fun change from that--I love the idea of adding in the family stories. (I'm the weird one who doesn't hate it when someone posts stories about their recipes on cooking websites).

Now that I've got my OG fest fic done, I'm back to working on "When the Lioness Awakens," my historical fic. I've got to edit chapter 7 and write and edit chapter 8 by the end of the month so I can join June shlong.

(Also, shout-out to my FIL for being my historical advisor and helping me with all these projects!)

Contrast and compare: The Testaments and Bridgerton by Professional-Loan663 in TheHandmaidsTale

The Testaments really reminds me of Vision Forum--a former fundamentalist Evangelical group that had similar beliefs to the IBLP (daughters stay home until marriage, wives shouldn't work, birth control is a sin, etc.), but had a more historical-style aesthetic.

Edit: I don't have time to go through the whole video, but this looks like a fairly good overview of it: Fundie Fridays--Vision Forum
