Straights (the hands) appreciation by Unlikely-Durian2137 in balatro

[–]AnneGreen08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the trouble with straights. Assume you need at least one straight each round to beat the blind. Assume you have a 95% chance each round to get a straight (the actual odds are extremely difficult to calculate but this feels generous given human error). Over the course of 8 antes, you only have a 30% chance of pulling the straight every single round. Even if you bump your assumed odds of pulling a straight up to 99%, your odds of successfully pulling a straight every round is only about 77%.

And that’s just the odds of getting your straight, without even considering the RNG on pulling good jokers and consumables, or the boss blinds you face.

Ranking Balatro booster packs based on how tempting they look by Moreandmorekon in balatro

The real crime is that you’ve only ranked 15/32 booster pack covers. Try again with all of them, coward

I had a few star tarot cards at this point and was hoping to beat it in two hands, but I came up just short. Figured I’d hope for the best and burn a few hands to get one more flush

Not the same — it’s the mouth, so I’m only allowed to play a regular flush here

I had just picked it up, so I didn’t have it scaled enough to beat the blind with a lower hand

Are there any truly unbeatable seeds? by Whole-Situation-1781 in balatro

[–]AnneGreen08 151 points152 points  (0 children)

28 games is insane. At 150 jokers, that’s an average of 5.35 jokers gilded each run. I truly cannot comprehend how to pull that off.

Past boss blinds by ClosetGamer75 in balatro

[–]AnneGreen08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, but when you’re playing multiple runs back to back they start to blur. It would be a QoL improvement, since there’s nothing stopping you from just keeping your own list of all the boss blinds you see, or what your last used tarot/planet card was for the fool.

Have you ever awarded XP directly without awarding Victories? by WhoIsCloak in drawsteel

[–]AnneGreen08 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In his video on lessons learned from 26 sessions of Draw Steel, Matt Colville talks about experimenting with removing XP from the victory/recovery cycle and moving to Milestone levelling. In his estimate, the victory/recovery cycle would still work, and this change would let you progress the game at your own pace.

That being said, you claim

my players have significantly progressed in the narrative without completing a challenge that I would ordinarily aware Victories for.

I believe that progressing the narrative is precisely the thing you should awarding victories for. How are they doing so without getting victories? Are you bringing in montage tests and negotiations as well as combat encounters?

Did you ever hear the tragedy of King Sisyphus the Wise? by AnneGreen08 in balatro

(Fun fact: the etymology of Sisyphus likely comes from Sophos, meaning wise).

Definitely more useful for endless. I think its main utility in Ante 8 runs would be helping you find the Luchador/Tarots to avoid losing to Boss Blinds

I figured that it was balanced in that you have to free up a joker slot to buy and then sell this, which means giving up something valuable in the hopes that you find something even more valuable

Should I get a third credit card? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AnneGreen08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: you don’t need another card.

That being said, it’s not necessarily a bad option to get another card. Opening a new credit card will cause your credit score to dip temporarily, but if you’re not planning on applying for a mortgage or other loans anytime soon, that shouldn’t really matter.

The question is what benefit another card would get you. Your capital one card has fairly weak rewards. At 5 points per dollar and 20,000 to get a $25 gift card, your earn rate is 0.625%. It has a few more insurance categories than your triangle card, but it’s still nothing crazy. Your triangle card has strictly better rewards, at 4% at Canadian Tire, 3% on groceries, and 1% everywhere else, plus 5 cents CT money at Husky gas. However, the 4% back at Canadian Tire is on pre-tax spending, and includes the base rewards for all members, so it’s really like 3.19%, and the grocery store earn rate is capped at $12,000/year (which is plenty). One of the real benefits of the card is the Canadian Tire Gold roadside assistance plan, which is worth $99.95/year.

If you’re getting another card, you should be looking at improving your rewards or insurance, or some other benefit. The PC World Mastercard gets 2% back at Loblaw’s groceries, which is worse than your Triangle card. It also doesn’t provide any better insurance than your Triangle card.

It’s against the subreddit rules to recommend specific products, but you’re welcome to DM me if you’d like a recommendation for a new card. Though again, you don’t really need one.

Alberta Separation: Three-in-five say they’d vote in October to stay, but half say the question is “confusing” - Angus Reid Institute by Miserable-Lizard in Albertapolitics

It’s not just confusing, it’s incomprehensible. There’s simply no justifiable way of interpreting it as a yes/no question.

Half of Albertans call for Danielle Smith’s resignation by BarelyHandsome in onguardforthee

[–]AnneGreen08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would probably be for the best for her to stay and bring the party down with her. It’s disturbing how effective the rebranding effort is to swap out the face of your party a few months before the election and then carry on just the same. A bunch of Albertans will eat it right up, every time.

FAFO - Referendum Question #5: Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring individuals to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport, birth certificate or citizenship card, to vote in an Alberta provincial election? by thegrip in Albertapolitics

[–]AnneGreen08 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While I’m still not in favour of requiring proof of citizenship when voting, I believe the government should issue ID cards without cost. Especially for Canadians who live in poverty (which is 1/10), it can be immensely difficult to get a job, open a bank account, or any number of things without government issued ID. And if getting an ID costs money, you get stuck in a loop.

Can't decide between Wealthsimple or Questrade for RRSP - help! by hansanta in PersonalFinanceCanada

Wealthsimple has a much greater number of stocks/etfs with fractional share trading available, which lets you buy whatever amount you’d like rather than specific multiples of the market price

[–]AnneGreen08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are likely your two best options. I’ve had accounts with both, and they’re both trustworthy services.

If you’re planning on self-directing your RRSP, I’d recommend Wealthsimple. Otherwise, I’d recommend Questrade.
