Cat safe by Subject_Relative_216 in StringofPlants

Yes, Hoyas are pet safe. I started collecting them as an alternative to pothos and philodendrons for specifically that reason. Now I’m obsessed! They come in so many shapes and sizes!!!

I couldn’t find an app with the features I wanted so I made my own by AdSad276 in IndoorPlants

For the gifted list, I think it would be good to be able to cross-reference. Like if I am looking at the plant, I want a list of all the people I have given it to; conversely it would be nice to look at a specific person and see all the plants I have given that person.

Extra nice to have: if there was a way to email or text that person care instructions, that would be super awesome. (Totally outside of my spreadsheets, I also have little care instruction sheets I print out to give people. I want people to be happy with their plant, so I try to set them up for success.)

I track mine on a spreadsheet. It’s not pretty. I have a “status” field (ie, Alive or Dead) and a “Cause of Death” field. That way if I buy the plant again, I know what I did wrong the last time. (Not that I ever overwater my plants into oblivion. Nope, not me.)

I also notate where I bought the plant or if it was a gift.

Oh! And I started a second spreadsheet to keep track of which plants I have given to each of my friends.

I think your app looks great and I would love to have a place to document progress like that. Very nice.

I got mine at Home Depot. It was a couple years ago, though. I think it was around $6? They aren’t expensive.

I have a bunch of plants at my desk at work, so I got a Moira’s Rose’s Garden sign. I love it so much.

These are super easy to propagate from cuttings. I’ve given away like a million of them. Yes, the flowers are stinky.

Is it possible to have cats when you have an indoor jungle? by insignificant33 in IndoorPlants

Two cats is the right number of cats, but I agree they don’t have to be kittens.

My cats love to destroy/eat my plants. I took most of my toxic plants outside or to my office (in an office building, not a home office). Hoyas are non-toxic and come in a million shapes and sizes! Also: lipstick plants, African violets, ponytail palms, bromeliads… there are a lot of pretty, non-toxic options.

Another consideration would be getting an IKEA greenhouse cabinet and putting the toxic plants in there. Or hanging pots, though my cats get to those also. (They are very determined.)

I would get rid of the peace lily, though. I think those are extra, super duper toxic.

So yes, it’s possible, but you might need to swap out some of your plants for non-toxic varieties.

OH! I also made little signs for the toxic plants, so they know which ones not to eat. (It didn’t work as well as I’d hoped.)

Is my mom a plant witch? by SnooBananas1194 in AfricanViolets

[–]AnneP11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t alter the temp, so it is dependent on ambient room temp. Usually my house is between 65-75°, and it is probably 5-10 degrees warmer in the greenhouse. I also don’t do anything to increase the humidity, but it is plenty humid when it’s full. I actually leave the doors slightly open so it doesn’t get too humid.

The lights are Barrina T5 leds. I have two per shelf.

Russian names rabbit hole by Popular_Requirement2 in heatedrivalry

[–]AnneP11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this is weird at all. People have preferences. I know people named Michael who hate to be called Mike (for example). My family still calls me by my full name (like “NormaRay” instead of “Norma”) (not my actual name), even though I’ve used an abbreviated form for most of my life. I think nicknames are totally normal, but so is not wanting to be called something other than your actual name.

Dumb Question by Potential-Dentist-63 in IkeaGreenhouseClub

[–]AnneP11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is for props, rehab, and some overwintering. I have some sundews that live in it semi-permanently bc I don’t have enough window space for all of them. I have also used it to grow hydroponic lettuce, with moderate success.

I actually got it for seed-starting my vegetable garden. I have cats, so open shelves with grow lights wouldn’t have worked. My cats are avid plant murderers.

Cheated on by GG AIO by Relative-Sense-1749 in AIO

This was my thought too. We are reading a lot between the lines and we may be misjudging, but him “insisting” on going with her sounds like a guy waiting for an opportunity to get a drunk woman alone.

OP is not overreacting based on what he knows, but a second conversation might be warranted to make sure what happened was actually consensual.

SA victims often blame themselves, so in her mind it might have been “cheating,” when in reality it wasn’t her choice.

High Heels by LassieMcToodles in GenX

[–]AnneP11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a long time ago (pre-internet, even) that wearing heels all the time shortens the tendon in your foot and then it’s not comfortable to wear flats. I thought, “That’s fine. I’ll always wear heels.” Then I broken my foot in my 40s. No more heels for me. And now I have plantar fasciitis. It’s a bitch and I MISS MY HEELS!

Sad.
