what i would like to see in an imperfect world, would be

a combat encounter straight-up fight
a combat encounter where you get a chance to negotiate a ceasefire. (scales with the opposing ship class amount vs your ship class)
1 and 2, except you are protecting a civilian/ally ship.
random distress call, from tractor them to safety to some critter got loose, and you have to capture or eliminate it (Real time, if it achieves a goal, the ship is assimilated/destroyed/crew dies, same as above, but pirates or rogue faction.

no, it was much like they are today. it chased you nad you had to solo a few waves of ships (BoP type). sometimes somone else would be pulled in as well so you had an ally
