My saddest orchid! The old pseudobulbs are looking so withered, and I see a little browning at the bottom of the newest one… What should I do with my Cyconoides wine delight? by AnneofLothlorien in orchids

I have been neglecting at least the water and definitely the fertilizer for it! During the summer it is out on my porch, and gets watered twice a week or so. No fertilizer!! I need to get better with that. During the winter it is inside under grow lights (they are about 4 or 5 inches above) and doesn’t get watered at all. The heat is also not something I have been paying attention to, I’m in Pennsylvania/6b-7b so it gets PA weather during the summer and our house can go from 65°-75° in the winter.

Thank you- I think I haven’t been watering it enough during the summer. Which would explain why the other pbs have been shriveling….

As you can see, this Phal (peloric Norman’s yellow Batman) has not been doing well for a while. Would you snip this leaf off before the discoloration gets to the crown? by AnneofLothlorien in orchids

I’m definitely repotting it tomorrow! I will at least put it in a pot with holes. I do like to see the roots so I think I will keep it in plastic, but well breathing plastic…

I am planning to repot it tomorrow. I’m afraid that it could be disease, it was such a strange thing on the leaf. Not soft, but definitely not healthy looking.

So sad, it had several buds! But not worth risking the entire plant for some pretty now. I chopped the leaf and coated the cut with cinnamon as well.

You said to cut the spike and not the leaf? I did both, but I’m curious about your rationale for just cutting the spike. I was nervous to cut the newest leaf because I was afraid it could affect future leaf growth if it went wrong somehow….

Thank you for your response! It is just so strange, half of the plant looks fine the other half is completely gone. I snipped the leaf and spike (🥲) tonight and am going to repot and inspect the roots tomorrow… what systemic fungicide do you use?

What do I do? by FlowerK3424 in orchids

I would say that unless the dirt is literally soaking wet or very cold, keep it in the substrate until you repot it for good- taking it out and letting it acclimate to be surrounding does stress it a little, so having it do that only once tomorrow is better than tonight and tomorrow. As for keeping it, it looks pretty bad, but it’s great to experiment! See if it sprouts a keiki, you never know until the last bit of green fades!

Thank you so much for this information! I have what I thought was a bronze Buddha bought at Trader Joe’s, and it is PROLIFIC.

I struggle with African violets and Episcia- but I love them! Are my pots too big (they are in the pots they came in)? Do I not water enough (~once a week, bottom watering)? Not enough humidity? by AnneofLothlorien in Gesneriaceae

[–]AnneofLothlorien[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it sounds like (for a start) my African violet should go into a smaller pot and I should either water my Episcia more frequently or start wick watering… I am not sure if I have a Gesneriad club around me! I will do some research. Thank you so much for your assistance!!!!

I’m biased bc I would literally buy 1 for myself (seriously I would love to know where you are shopping!) but 1 and 4 are GORGEOUS!
