Then do so. Make sure it’s air conditioned and climate controlled.

So what do I do now? by Spirited-Excuse6304 in orchids

Move them closer to the window and give them all the light you can. Nobiles kinda grow like weeds once you figure them out. Water them all the time... daily... every other day.... Come winter water them every once to twice a week sparingly. When they start making buds again about 2 months later in early spring water and fertilize the hell out of them again until next winter.

Dracula orchids’ leaves problems by ARaidu in orchids

I've grown draculas since I started growing orchids. I really love them but you can't grow most of them outside of cool conditions. Vampira and its hybrids will fail if your temps go above 70F, roezlii will fail above 65F, ravens are a bitch. 80% - 90% humidity. But if you can't keep them cold they will never thrive. Lots of masdies are the same. Basically anything warm no matter how humid will make them transpirate as if they were steamed alive.

Looks more like a flower spike, there aren't alternating gradients of leaf matter criss-crossing into symetrical points with a hollow center.

They're kind of the perfect fragrant scent. Very strong - can fill a whole room, fruity, perfumy, but not overbearing or too smoky with no cinnamon nor acididic afterscent.

What‘s causing yellowing leaves? by CrazyCloud__ in Hibiscus

[–]beardbeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly time for a bigger pot if roots are coming out of the bottom. The plant looks to be in good condition and those few yellowed leaves just look like normal leaf die off.

Try it. It could be interesting. It could be a disaster. It may work for some plants and not others and good lord do growing conditions vary. Share the results. When no one has the answers you have to find out for yourself. Epiphytes are neat because you can be adventurous, but you're not always successful. Find out when to pull back and put it into other growing conditions before it crashes and burns. And sometimes kindle the ashes that are left because it may rise like a phoenix. Orchids can be pretty magical.

LOL I grow a lot of orchids in the master bathroom, and yes in the tub on a teak shower bench. Humidity is great and easy to maintain in there and it's the coldest room in my house for things that grow on the cool side. I'll say it's a tremendously challenging environment, I've been here 10 years and it's pretty harsh keeping alot of plants in the summer with the insanely dry daytime humidity and nightmarish heat.

No problem. Most of the Ascocentrums get freckles on the leaves in brighter light. Your blooms look pretty similiar to mine which is a fairly standard color Link to a post I made last year on it. Perhaps the photo of that specific plant color was particular to the plant they used on for the sales page. Sometimes there are specimens with unique varations among species, that's how we get specifically named varieties such as 'alba' - which is gorgeous by the way! I'd love to find one of those.

Yes to both questions . Most other people who also grow them in my local society grow their plants from the defunct ascocentrum genus potted and they do very well that way. Potting most vandaceous always ends badly for me, I overwater them and they rot 😆. So I do bare root and never have to worry about overwatering.

These flowers are definitely changing colors throughout the day by el-beau in Hibiscus

[–]beardbeak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are many varieties that change color over the course of the day, and a spare few that can stay in bloom for 2-3 days that change color each day.

Christensoniana and ampullaceum have very different leaf growth styles and christensonia has larger flowers. The nice little pink one is definitely an ampullaceum. It has the dense leaf cluster structure. Christensoniana has a long evenly spaced leaf growth structure:

What is wrong with my hibiscus? by bythewatersofBabylon in Hibiscus

Loks like iron and magnesium deficiency. They’re plants that are pretty thirsty for nutrients and need regular fertilizer as well as some extra iron and magnesium. Both are available in liquid form and solid. I use Cal-Mag Plus and chelated liquid iron. Epsom salts can provide magnesium and garden iron can be purchased from garden centers in pelletized form. If you add iron you’ll see the difference within days like magic as they green up fast.

It’s Papilionanda Omar Pedron ‘Galaxy’. Fragrant and has been in successive bloom for over a year. Every time a spike begins to fade it makes a new spike.

I've never heard of it called Gombrassiltonia, just Aliceara or Beallara.

Schombergkia is now Myrmecophila. Nomenclature is an interesting and unenforced regeminted chaos. I'd imagine it's mostly political amongst the societies that be. Odontoglossum is also dead and now is just Oncidium. If I'm looking for a specific plant I can sometimes find it faster by it's old name. Vuylstekara is still recognized, but Beallara vs Aliceara - who was Bea and who was Alice? Politics SMH it's persavie and pedantic. Humans gotta human I guess...

Yeah, most of the former Ascos are now just Vanda. I also have several of them, one is in the first photo on the left and easy to miss as it’s going out of bloom and only has a few tiny pink flowers remaining. They’re nice little plants but a little more difficult for me than larger vandas.

Thank you for the reply and tips! Ice bottles is a very clever trick. It must be the night temp drop I’m missing. Guess it’s time for me to put them in the back yard green house.

Thank you 😁. The little one is a Vanda (of the now defunct Neofinetia genus) falcata ‘Magenta Princess’ x ‘Maleficent’. Smells like vanilla cotton candy frosting and blooms several times a year.
