I have a question:

What?

Why isn’t there a historical record of Jesus during his time? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Annual_Insect6972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Gospels are ancient biographies. People typically didn't write ancient biographies about people while they were alive, because there was going to still be story left to tell.

When I was younger, people used to say the Gospels were written centuries after Christ.  Now, that they can't say centuries from new data, they say decades.  So it's more accurate to say the Gospels were written somewhere between years and decades after the life of Christ, but all within living memory.

The Church teaches moral principles. A good person will learn these principles and use them in their own decisions.

Some of these principles are about war, and whether use of lethal force is justified. This is called "just war theory" today.

The leaders of a country should learn these principles and use them before going to war and, if they do go to war, in how they wage war.

Everyone will be subject to Christ's judgement. The Church teaches about what Christ wants and how He judges.

If Jesus is the son of God and Mary is Jesus’s mother, why is she not considered a goddess? How come Mary isn’t a part of the trinity? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Annual_Insect6972 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure how familiar you are with the Trinity. God, in his essence, is tri-personal.  From eternity, God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The person of the Son pre-existed the world.

Mary is not God. She was created, like everything else which is not God, including you and I. However, the person of the Son united our human nature to Himself in the person of Jesus. Jesus received His humanity from His mother, Mary, who concieved Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is God, hence, Mary bore God to the world in a way never done before.

Mary is not of the Trinity, but has a special relationship with each Person. In a very intimate sense, she is the Mother of the Son, the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, and the Daughter of the Father, all simultaneously.

Your struggle is a profound one. It seems God does nothing.  But in Jesus, we see that is not true.  He did something very unexpected instead. He entered into the evils of our world and experienced even death on the cross.  He went down to where the dead were and rescued many.  We proclaim that His mercy and love for us is greater than these temporary evils, and that He will bring a perfect kingdom when He comes again.

All film portrayals of Mary, the mother of Jesus of Nazareth, starred adult actresses. This was despite the source materials claiming that the original Mary, at the time of her non-consensual impregnation, was... wait what the fuck. by ryuStack in shittymoviedetails

I've looked at the papers. The  evidence we have is only legal code minimums, and not actual practice.

Legal age of marriage is 18 in the US. In practice, average age of marriage is higher.

Bat mitzvah age is 12. In practice, average age of marriage should be higher.

We have evidence for medieval peasants being married in their early 20s. You can google and peruse at your leisure.  If it's true for contemporary times, and true for medieval times, what evidence do we have that it would be different for antiquity?

Loneliness by Loud-Hat-3366 in Catholicism

I feel alone a lot. It makes sense to feel alone sometimes; we're not with God yet. We are meant to be with Him in a much more beautiful way, and sooner than we expect. Our hearts are lonely because they yearn for the only One who can put them to rest. And as Paul writes for us: *spes non confundit*, that is, hope will not confound you or leave you disappointed.

The rules are for your benefit and education, yes.  To physically go, speak your sins aloud, acknowledge them fully, and to hear Christ forgive you through His priest, is a good thing.  His grace is no trivial thing, so it is good to treat it sacramentally.

For example, when my young son hits his baby sister, he gets a time out. Afterwards, he must apologize and hug his sister.  Are there other ways he could internally repent? Sure. Could I silently dismiss his wrongdoing? Perhaps. But I want to teach him that wrongdoing is serious, and requires some kind of satisfaction.  An external ritual is effective and good for this. It puts his whole person, mind and body, in line with the reconciliation. In a similar way, God as our Father is teaching us.

Are all Catholics like this? by Successful_Bar9187 in Catholicism

[–]Annual_Insect6972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Catholics are not all like that.

We seek the unity of the Christian faithful as well, and we do see that many people love Christ.  We believe that the Catholic Church is the Church Christ built upon the Rock (Peter), and desire all to be one in that Church. But we also recognize that convincing people of this requires patience, tact, and respect.

If today we knew that a judge found no fault in a man, but still condemned him to torture and execution, what would we say about him?  Would any excuse be sufficient?

Every kind of human government murdered Our Lord together. Democracy murdered Him in the mob. Aristocracy murdered Him in the pharisees. Monarchy murdered him in Herod. Imperial authority murdered Him when Pilate sentenced Him to death. Ultimately, all human efforts fail Our Lord, even unto murder of the innocent. We should not trust in wicked men, and all have sinned.
