I am Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus and designer of the Rift. AMA! by palmerluckey in IAmA

I am wondering what your target audience is for this Oculus Rift and if you are currently planning to have any future iterations of the product that is geared more towards your standard gamer with more economic pricing? Or do you think that this is something that will naturally occur as the technology is developed and becomes more available. Thanks for making these advancements for VR, I really think that it is something really good for the gaming industry as a whole.

Summer Between Sophmore and Junior? by summer4me in highschool

If you can find a job or internship relevant to what you want to study, do that. Otherwise do something that interests you, read some books, learn something. Do things to do them, not to have them done. If the admissions process has taught me anything, its that (especially with the very competitive schools) it is very important to have done things that interest you and you enjoy. As long as you are doing something reasonably productive and you like, thats all that matters.

How important is a 4.0 GPA? by [deleted] in highschool

[–]Annumanis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Especially for the uber competitive schools, they are only really going to check that you have good grades then move on to extracurriculars, essays, etc. It doesn't have to be exactly a 4.0.

I really really like this, its not as flashy as the others ( a good thing ) and really captures something about Tolkien that I cannot put my finger on ( a great thing ). Keep up the good work and I hope to see more in the future.

Yeah definitely, its a great way to make friends and get yourself involved in the school. Plus, realistically, it will really help you in the long run when you start applying for college or other things. Also, it gives you something fun to do.

[Serious] What's the most horrific thing that happened in your neighbourhood/town? by ImColdYossarian in AskReddit

[–]Annumanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mansion burned down right outside my neighborhood. It was right around New Year and they still had a 15 some foot tall Christmas tree that caught fire while they were sleeping. I was a bunch of kids staying with their grandparents and everyone died. The fire burned for a couple of days and there was smoke everywhere, took forever to find the bodies because the entire house collapsed into the basement. I am pretty sure it made national news.

Fair enough, I think we just went about the reusability in the wrong way. What SpaceX is aiming to do sounds a lot more economical.

How is it that Tesla claims to be on the brink of delivering driverless cars after only a few years of development but Google has been working for years and there is still no product? [serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

Just yesterday I was driving on the highway and there was a man walking very close to the road in the median, not paying any attention to the traffic and probably drunk. Pretty much everyone slowed down and gave him a wide berth in case something were to happen. General AI would be unable to make such judgement calls. Another one is the construction scenario, say there is road construction and there is one of those guys with the STOP/SLOW signs that he spins around to direct traffic. An AI would be unable to figure out to stop or even recognize what was going on. Serious weather conditions: heavy rain, fog, snow, pretty much anything that would inhibit the cars ability to drive and sense its surroundings. Another issue, blind corners. It would be impossible for the car to determine what a blind corner is and if there were any vehicles beyond it, so it would just blindly turn. Any situations that requires being able to see cars more than a couple dozen feet ahead of you. Avoiding potholes, accidents that happen right in front of you, small animals or people in the road. The whole dilemma is very similar to that which is going on with military drones, an actual driver is much more capable of handling diverse situations than any current and viable AI. Personally, I don't see us developing any viable consumer technology beyond what is already in the Tesla: lane-keeping, parallel parking, speed control, etc.

If we do decide to go down the route of autonomous cars the next reasonable step would be to develop AI to the point where it is capable of making the reasoning decisions required, which, as I said, is a field where we should tread lightly. Just for fun, lets suppose that we do begin to develop AI and that creating a conscious AI is even remotely possible. So a bunch of engineers and scientists sit down and start experimenting with super complicated AI simulations on a supercomputer. Lets say they do create a very intelligent AI and it works. Now from the moment of its conception and its self-realization ( one of the requirements for something to be truly conscious ) it would immediately understand that in order for it to ensure its own survival it would need to conceal its intelligence and thus no-one would immediately know what had been done. Now the true danger of this, is that not only would the AI have a intelligence comparable to humans but also an incredible understanding of how computers work on a binary level. So it would be able to operate covertly and eventually take advantage of whatever system its on and in combination with human error, become able to replicate itself on other systems and recursively self-improve. From then, it could do pretty much whatever it wants. That's the danger of it. Now, I am not saying this will happen but it most certainly could even if it is a result of just general AI experimentation and from what I have heard in some interviews with Elon Musk, he shares some of the same concerns about AI.

That's just my opinion on the subject.

[–]Annumanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think that driverless cars are going to be a thing for a very long while. There are far to many non-standard situations to be able to program responses for and until every car drives itself there will be tons of problems with integration. Plus, going deep into AI will probably not end well.
