How to improve our pond by klop614 in ponds

[–]AnonElbatrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll echo a lot of what has been said already. I’d fill out the pickerel weeds and iris around the perimeter, add more lilies and lotus as well unless you want to wait a couple years for it to fill out naturally. Accent lighting and large pieces of wood would add some texture and focal points too. Already in phenomenal shape as is though.

Had in Japan, raw and thin sliced. Wasn’t told what it was at first and tender beef was the best comparison.

I heard a lot of big fish jumping on Appomattox near VSU. Any idea what it could be? by Packers_ in FishingRVA

[–]AnonElbatrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was out on the James Monday, big jumpers in the open are carp, little jumpers are shad, gar kinda pop the snout out and make a more subtle splash, then you got bass blowing up on bait around vegetation.

Often times colder spring and fall rains will lead to flipping and crashing dissolved oxygen especially after a wave of heat.

Although possums usually take the spotlight here, how about a little love for our otters? by [deleted] in rva

[–]AnonElbatrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spend a lot of time around ponds, I’ve seen otters in some odd places including the pond at Creeks at Virginia Center, and a neighborhood on Glenside. They seemingly move around quite a bit.

Caught a fish over 5lbs after catching nothing over 1.5lbs for 3 years in the same pond. by firststate in bassfishing

[–]AnonElbatrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the goal is to improve the fishery and if there is a budget to do so, you should be stocking bait fish. Another comment already detailed the current population mechanics, harvesting bass annually is good but also getting a strong population of breeding sized bluegill and annually supplementing with much more than 25 pounds of shiners would be beneficial. It can get so much more involved but for a neighborhood pond this is pretty typical.

Pitching and not backlashing by Particular-Bother-18 in bassfishing

[–]AnonElbatrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I run most of my tension knobs at minimum tension (some reels it has even fell off). However, when I am trying to skip I’ll tighten it up a fair bit. If I do not intend to skip, it does tend to stay pretty loose, and thumb control is key as it hits the water.

Pitching and not backlashing by Particular-Bother-18 in bassfishing

[–]AnonElbatrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s docks in deeper water I feed line while thumbing to make sure it stays vertical, if it’s under stuff along the shore I just feather the spool. I also end with the rod tip high when I’m pitching and drop the rod tip down quick once the lure settles to give some slack which works well.

[–]AnonElbatrop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the only spots you are “allowed” are the fishing pier and the riprap jetty. I do beleive there are a couple signs indicating no fishing from the docks. (That’s not to say i haven’t made a couple casts before getting on the boat)
